    shaun hates hospitals. he’d hated hospitals the whole time his mother was sick and he hates them to this day. but his brother, his big brother, was laid up with a fucking brain bleed. so he’d snuck in after visiting hours, after he’d finished classes for the day. shaun sits there for a while before he reaches out to brush hair from no’s face only to stop in his tracks. his hand jerks back; he hadn’t known he was awake.

          no honestly doesn’t sleep as much as he should. sometimes he closes his eyes and just breathes, but sleep doesn’t come and so recovery is slow. everything is slow. no had always been sharp and precise, but when he reaches out to touch shaun’s hand, his hands shake and he feels sluggish so he lets it drop back down to the bed. “wh’r you doing here, shaun? ‘s past visiting hours.” his eyes flicker over to where his brother is sitting and grimaces when even the simple action leaves his head spinning.

          the wolf remembers very few things, but his name is among the few that he can recall. isaac. he doesn’t remember the first shift, though, or the little things that came before the wolf. his world is two parts survival, one part running through the forest to try to distract from the wild thoughts that swarm in his head. it doesn’t even occur to him how alone he is until he runs past a road on his morning run and smells the sharp scent of moving cars, through the forest. 

          he hasn’t seen humans, or wolves in his forest since the last remaining pack he’d had had disappeared, become some ghost in his memory. their scents had long since faded and all that was left was his own. but there’s this new scent and it smells like intruders and danger. but it’s gone past too fast for him to truly consider it so he forces himself to forget for the remainder of his run. the echo of the scent of it remains, though, and his curiosity soon wins over. 

          isaac finds himself tracing the path of the scent to an isolated home in the forest just past noon, after he’s had his hunt, after he’s had the run to clear his head again.
