Riot Women 1.01 & 1.02 • Beth Thornton & Kitty Eckersley
AMELIA BULLMORE as Yvonne Vaux Riot Women (2025–)
“The thing is, the song wasn't scripted. We'd rehearsed the scene as it was, then when the cameras were setting up, Rosie was noodling around on the piano (just for fun) then she started to sing this most beautiful song, which I now know to be 'A Case Of You' by Joni Mitchell. It was mesmerising.
As I say, it wasn't scripted, but it fitted the mood of the scene so perfectly that we decided to film it, not knowing whether we'd be able to use it or not. Joni Mitchell very rarely gives permission for her work to be used like this, so we wrote to her and explained the story... and she gave us the thumbs up. Can you believe it? We felt very honoured and very lucky and very grateful. It's a breath-taking moment, and I think it's the most extraordinary thing l've ever had the privilege of being part of shooting.”

I would highly recommend Riot Women on BBC (I think it's on Britbox abroad). It's the latest show by Sally Wainwright (Brits will know her as the creator of Happy Valley, one of the best British shows in recent memory, and she'll be known to many on Tumblr for creating Gentleman Jack). It's about a group of largely menopausal women who decide to start a punk band for a charity talent show at a local school and through that find solidarity and community and a way to express their fury. It's exactly the kind of show Tumblr would love: multiple queer characters whose sexuality and gender identity is not a source of trauma; explores the female experience and is written by a woman; there's a sexy as fuck redhead woman with an incredible voice who, in just the first episode, takes a sledgehammer to a man's car. All around strong sapphic energy so people can edit together those fancam things. Trust me, you'll love it.
It's official. It's in ink. What are we? We're the Riot Women!
Season 2 is going to be set 2 years after season 1!
Riot Women season 2 will officially be ours two years after it first aired and be set in 2027. Set to film in late 2026, one star admits the
"We need more queer period dramas-" "we need more shows about lesbians that aren't in their teens or early twenties-" "we need more queer shows with happy endings-" "we need more well written sapphic shows with a plot-" "we need more queer shows with an overall funny and joyful tone-" "we need sapphic shows with better acting and directing-" "we need more shows about lesser known queer historical figures-" "we need more sapphic shows that really feel like they're made for sapphics-" Gentleman Jack. The show you're looking for is Gentleman Jack.
the funniest thing about riot women is that there's only two halfway decent male characters and one is a 24yo drug dealer called spongebob and the other is a bloke with an arse licking fetish called jack the rimmer
