Today is HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, a day to recognize the volunteers, community members, and researchers working to find a safe and effective vaccine to prevent HIV. Such a vaccine, along with existing HIV treatment and prevention strategies, would help achieve the goal of ending the HIV epidemic.
A disproportionate amount of our community is living with HIV/AIDS, and a vaccine would greatly improve our quality of life as a whole. Our siblings would not be dying slow and painful deaths from this internal monster. Although HIV is not the same death sentence that it once was, it is important that we keep fighting and moving toward the development of a vaccine and a cure.
To our family living with HIV/AIDS, you are not alone. You are supported in your fight. You are loved. Your positive status makes you no less important and valued. We are here for you if you need a hand to hold or shoulder to cry on. You are not less worthy of love and support, and you are not dirty just because you have a chronic illness.
Although we at Spectrum Diversity Community Center are not equipped to handle to specific needs of those living with HIV/AIDS, there is a nonprofit in our area that does: CANAPI (Community AIDS Network/Akron Pride Initiative). They have multiple wonderful programs in place to help the population living with HIV/AIDS as well as free testing available on Thursdays between 5p and 8p.
For the ask game, 5 and 19!
5. How was your day?
it was kinda just okay, nothing happened bad or good. actually wait i just remembered i have math homework to complete….fffff
19. Tell us a story from when you were young
oooo okay! so when i was young i visited my mor mor (grandmother) once and she puts a strange amount of belief into fairytales considering she’s a science professor at university. one of these fairytales she believes in a lot is the legend of fae folk. on this day i was visiting her she brought me outside into the foresty area behind her house because she wanted to show me all her snails, but instead i wandered into a mushroom circle, which is considered a portal to the realm of fae. the second my mor mor noticed she screamed, straight up vaulted over to me to pick me up, all the while yelling “jeg har en fjols for en grand datter!” (i have a fool for a grand daughter). so because of this, i have several pure iron necklaces that i wear daily out of habit, and i am considered a changeling on the danish side of my family!
Annual awareness days help to educate the general public and specific communities about HIV/AIDS. Since the virus affects people from all walks of life, the number of awareness days has increased over the years. Display this poster to remind you of upcoming awareness days, and use the hashtags shown to promote them on social media.
