so many system discord servers ban ANY mention of OEA or programming (even ones that allow mentions of abuse in vent channels…like … so talking about abuse is okay unless the abuse was intentional and orchestrated by more than one person?) using the fact that it’s disturbing/triggering as an excuse and it’s like. you are literally banning programmed systems from sharing basic facts about themselves and the way their system functions because it makes you think about their trauma (even if it’s not mentioned) which makes you uncomfortable.

like being programmed fundamentally changes the way my system works to the point where i cannot relate to non-programmed systems. i am not going to go into detail about what happened to make my system that way but it is exclusionary to ban systems from even mentioning that their systems function in a certain way due to a certain type of trauma which is ridiculous to me because … all systems are like that? like unless u believe in endos (& i don’t join pro endo servers, so) then everyone, by saying they’re a system, is implying they experienced severe trauma. intentionally excluding people who have experienced a type of abuse that you have not because it makes you uncomfortable is weird imo

also keeping discussions about OEA secretive is exactly what abusers want. treating being a survivor as taboo or inappropriate to talk about just further stigmatizes it and keeps victims silent

I (Hydra) agree. A lot of problems arise in syscords due to people doing this. It isn't every syscord, but a fair few.

For example, we all know the memes about syscords with mile-long trigger lists and banned topics. Some people want a community before they're ready for a community. They think there won't be any drama or conflict and are willing to sacrifice other people's comfort for their own.

Paranatural Theory

First up: I don’t check the pnat tumblr and thus do not know the state of its theorycrafting. However, I remember people on this site referring to the spirit possessing Spender as “Cthumbra” (something that was more widespread on the discord, though I don’t know where it originated). However, due to a possibly unintentional sneaky-sneak, its canon name was left unnoticed for a long time. I pointed it out on the discord and only then did people use it.

“The Shadow”, due to the nature of the spirit being shadows and Lucifer’s case-altering speech, was not, for the most part, noted as a name he uses for it. It passed under the radar, and people had to resort to coming up with clunky terms like “shadow spirit” (not wrong) and “cthumbra” (totally made up).

Anyway, this is just a tiny bit of aid to help the point of my theory. The main bulk is in the “keep reading”.

The Shadow is connected to the incident 13 years ago, the incident the Mayview Wight was at the center of and continues to be to this day. The Wight, the spirit that ties every mystery in Mayview together, is also the single biggest threat to it (Gwen is all ominous about what might happen when it wakes), at least in its connection to everything.

Chapter 7, having told us this, provided crucial context to this panel: 

I remember people (including myself) supposing Lucifer was referring to the Shadow when calling out the "TRUE THREAT" (also that it’s the “strongest spirit” Nin was referring to back in chapter 4), and used "SHADOW" as a smart and fancy way to directly reference it to Hijack Now, however, we can tell that the threat is the Wight (or implications created in the context of its existence), and that the Shadow is not equivalent to the threat; it spawned from the threat.

The Shadow is an entity cast by the Wight during the incident, just as any real shadow is cast by an object. Lucifer and Rick sought to understand the "power” through it because that's the most direct link they have to it.

Understanding this, another possibility is created: the Shadow is not a spirit. Not a traditional one (far as the adjective applies to matters of wights), in any case.

It has been noted by many readers that we were never shown its spectral energy. Why is that? I think that it's because while it follows the laws any other spirit has to (due to its origin), at its core, it's different somehow, specifically because of its nature as a sort of silhouette or leftover of the thing that birthed it. This difference is primarily seen in its lack of spectral color. It's not part of a spectrum, it's not white, it's not black: it simply doesn't have one, just as a shadow has no light. Just as shadows are an absence of light, the Shadow is a sort of absence of spectral energy. (it still has to be made of it, being a supernatural construct)

This might also explain why it didn't come out of Spender back when it was crawling out in chapter 4, as perhaps it can't? It might only be able to exist while it possesses something, and getting out is either physically impossible or spells certain doom. (note for the image: the tendrils come out, but not the Shadow itself. I don’t think it’s for the lack of time and speed.)

Honestly, this doesn't really tell us a lot besides the physical reality of the Shadow. It tells us nothing about what could have happened to cause this. You could come up with interpretations, but they'd be purely conjecture, as we simply don't have enough info to start actually building theories on what happened back then or why it is the way it is. However, it is important to understand as much about the Shadow as we can so we can be prepared for future revelations.
