July 25, 2015 - Update: Rhode Island Beach Explosion Caused By “Hydrogen Combustion.”

For two weeks, Rhode Island investigators — including U. S. Coast Guard above — have tried to understand why on Saturday morning, July 11, 2015, at 11:15 AM Eastern, that 60-year-old Kathleen Danise of Waterbury, Connecticut, was catapulted 10 feet straight up in the air from her Salty Brine Beach chair and landed on jetty rocks in Narragansett, cracking two ribs. Rhode Island Environmental Management reports the answer is an old Coast Guard corroded copper power cable found buried in the beach below the spot where Kathleen Danise went into the air. Scientists tested more than 300 samples of the beach sand and found some places had about 10,000 times expected hydrogen levels. The Coast Guard historically has not been required to remove abandoned power cables, but now the cable at Salty Brine Beach has been removed and investigators are studying other Rhode Island beaches.
