J Neurosurg 134:668–677, 2021 Subdural hematomas and hygromas (SDHs) are common complications in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) patients with shunts. In this registry-based study, patients with shunted iNPH were screened nationwide to identify perioperative variables that may increase the risk of SDH. Can anyone recommend a good pair of elbow pads for dogs? Kaiju has started to develop a hygroma and I want to keep this issue in check before it gets worse. He hates laying on blankets and beds so this would help immensely in his recovery. I just don’t want to spend money on a garbage set that doesn’t work.

Dog Hygroma
A while back, Wrigley’s left hock began to swell up. I had no idea as to what that was, so off to the vet we go. The vet looked at it and asked...
Vet: “Do you have carpeting in the house?”
Me: “No, we have hard wood floors.”
Vet: “Does he have a bed?”
Me: “Yes, he’s got a lovely bed. It’s a pillow top full sized bed. Mine.”
Vet: “He’s got a Hygroma. It can happen to large breed dogs. They lay on bare floors and the pressure causes fluid to build around the joints. Sometimes, they may drain fluid and sometimes, they get so bad that we have to drain them but that’s an absolute last resort. They usually go away on their own if you provide beds, throw rugs and cushiony stuff for him to lay on.”
Because it was draining a little, he sent us off with antibiotics. I went out and bought some throw rugs and a bed. As you can see, Wrigley loves laying NEXT to them....
I did a little research and it seems the most common Hygroma is on the dogs front leg elbows. More research showed that Mastiff’s are most prone to them and some owners apply hemorrhoid cream and some have bought leg wraps specifically made for Hygroma’s to help the swelling go down. After doing more research, it turns out that some of these wraps cost upwards of $80! Now, I’m not opposed to spending that kind of money for stuff my dog needs, because I’d sooner drop money making him better than myself, but knowing my dog, I’ll put it on him and I’ll find it covered in pee in the backyard because he managed to remove it. After looking at pics of the wraps, I figured I could make one myself being that I can throw down on a sewing machine.
I figured if my dog is going to be laid up with a boo boo, he might as well be laid up with a boo boo in style, lol...
They were really easy to make. I took pieces of material and sheepskin, cut a hole in the middle, sewed them together, reinforced the hole with a zig zag stitch and sewed velcro on it.
I made 8 of them so that when I wash one, I’ll have another on standby. Because the Hygroma was draining, I applied an anti-microbial spray, Neosporin, hemorrhoid cream and covered it with a piece of gauze and wrapped it with a self adhering wrap before applying the fabric wrap as a way to add more cushion. So far, it’s working. The Hygroma has gone down and it’s not draining as much.
