Hyper Bounce Blast, the arcade-inspired indie game we have mentioned before, was released on Friday. Our writer assisted Flump Studios throughout the project's nine months of development; and the work of everyone involved appears to be paying off. Coverage by Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Hardcore Gamer, Siliconera and other outlets--all of it encouraging--has recently emerged. Player feedback has been equally thrilling: the consensus is that Hyper Bounce Blast handily tops Flump's last game, the well-reviewed and TIGA-nominated Horizon Shift. By adhering to the instructions after the break, our followers can join the party. Still Eating Oranges has 15 copies of Hyper Bounce Blast to give out--starting now.

Our livestream is completed!

I livestreamed for close to 19 minutes for this one because I ran out of stuff to showcase from the game (And because I was doing pretty terrible at the end buaha).

I decided to use OBS to livestream this time so I was able to use my webcam and microphone so, if you’re curious to see what I look and sound like, now’s your chance! (I’m like a really rare spawn, very few people have ever seen what I look and sound like online haha).

Since our update in November, great progress has been made on Hyper Bounce Blast, the experimental shoot 'em up under development by Flump Studios with help from our writer. Although it missed last year's Insomnia56 games festival, the project appeared this past March at Insomnia57, where player feedback was extremely positive. And, today, Hyper Bounce Blast's debut trailer and press release--the former of which, fair warning, contains horror scenes--were circulated by its publisher. Featured above is the full artwork created for the project's cover by our collective's artist, who took inspiration from 1980s arcade cabinets. After roughly eight months' development, the game is nearly complete: if all goes well, Hyper Bounce Blast will launch on May 27. Our followers can expect a giveaway in the run-up to its release.

For the uninitiated, Hyper Bounce Blast is an arcade-influenced mashup of platforming and twin-stick shooting mechanics--in a sense, Mario meets Geometry Wars. Piloting a sphere, the player bounces across blue platforms while shooting down hostile red ships. A delicate balance emerges: bouncing higher and longer increases the points earned from red enemies, but a steady aim is required to claim those points. Challenging boss battles punctuate the action. This brief description, however, is only the beginning. Flump Studios and the others involved in Hyper Bounce Blast have contributed many, many hours of thought and care to the project. The result should be a game accessible to newcomers but deep enough for veterans. As Flump Studios wraps up production, we at Still Eating Oranges wish the team luck.

For several months, our writer has been the design consultant and main tester of Hyper Bounce Blast, a new arcade shooter by Paul Marrable of British developer Flump Studios. Marrable previously helmed the great Horizon Shift, which could be synopsized as two sessions of Space Invaders in motion simultaneously. Hyper Bounce Blast has a different premise, but it builds on this earlier project. Currently it is billed as "Geometry Wars mixed with Mario": the player, as a sphere inside an arena, bounces across blue platforms and shoots at swarms of hostile red ships. As one climbs the screen, the sphere becomes invulnerable; and enemy takedowns generate dramatically more points. A missed jump, however, lands one back in danger at the screen's bottom. Acrobatics and precision shooting must be balanced to secure a high score in Hyper Bounce Blast.

This foundation undergirds what should be a very wild, broad and colorful shoot 'em up. Bosses, bonus levels, combos, wall-jumping, power-ups, diverse enemies and the outrageous "hyper mode" shown above are, at the moment, planned or implemented. The game's soundtrack is being composed by Quantum Firefly, a gifted newcomer in the drum and bass scene. (Hear a brief sample of his work for Hyper Bounce Blast on SoundCloud. His debut EP, "Night and Day", may be streamed as well.) Those interested in monitoring the game's progress may follow its official Facebook page, maintained by Marrable; and readers in Birmingham should be able to play it this December, when it debuts at the Insomnia56 festival. Hyper Bounce Blast is set to launch on Steam in the first quarter of 2016. Nearer to the game's release, followers of Still Eating Oranges will have a chance to obtain it for free: we will be hosting a small giveaway.
