tbh this is one of my favorite games of all time, like the lore and the characters are amazing, but i think the main reason it “failed” in the gaming community is because it was targeted for a younger audience. If the creators had used the stronger horror/sci-fi themes from the concept art (shown above), fleshed out some character development a bit more, and overall directed it towards a more mature audience i think more people would recognize it
the concept art is truly some of the most interesting/cool horror pieces i’ve ever seen and i feel like if they really capitalized on that and made it a more mature game it could have revolutionized the idea of body horror in terms of combining AI and art.
Even in the gameplay itself I could definitely see them really wanting to push the horror vibe (I mean come on- the twisted version of disney world locations and the clock going insane and the whole blot thing-) and it makes me curious if the creative team wanted it to be more mature, but perhaps the Disney company wasn’t comfortable with Mickey in that setting (I remember they weren’t too fond of the Runaway Brain short).
Looking at the concept of the beetleworx and seeing how horrifying those were and then seeing the final version, it’s clear that the creators wanted a more fleshed out horror game than what they were able to do with disney characters. The concept of a lot of the twisted lands like the float yard, McJunk and Tomorrow city could have been so much more detailed and hopefully if there is a reboot then the game will be more HD and have more room for the original concepts to blossom and be more fleshed out. Whatever the case, I hope in the future theres a version of this somewhere where the characters are more evil and the creators are able to lean into the sci-fi and horror themes more heavily.
