Looking For Something That'll Never Come

Eliot Waugh x GN!Reader

Catch and Release Prompt: "Maze"

Summary: It's hard to miss you when you are always on the tip of his tongue.

Soundtrack: I've Been Waiting by Lil Peep

Warnings: The way I love this fictional man could be considered unhealthy, maybe.

You weren't sure how long you'd been lost in the maze.

It felt like minutes. It was still day when you stepped out into the light of the other side. The sun had barely moved. You were panting from the effort of running through all the twists and turns. But you were elated, exhilarated. Adrenaline pumped through you from the adventure.

There was a man standing before the exit, looking forlorn. Lost. Depressed and despondent. You were running out of words.

It took a moment to recognize him. He was, after all, a man now. The last time you'd seen him, you both had still been kids. You supposed, as you took in the changes -- the longer hair, the beard, the wearied look in his eyes -- that you still were a kid.

"El?" you asked, stepping towards the man.

He looked up sharply and dropped his cigarette mid drag. The name that passed through his lips, your name, was whispered reverently, disbelievingly.

You realized, then.

This maze had been his altar, and you his god. He'd prayed at this unholy site every day for your presence, for your return into his life. And finally, those prayers had been answered.

His cigarette forgotten on the lush green grass, he launched himself at you and pulled you into the tightest embrace, his hold that of a man reborn. A man who'd gotten all he'd hoped for and would never, ever let it go.

"You fucking scared me," he finally said, after a long collection of moments dedicated to silent exaltation.

"How long have you been waiting for me?" you asked, afraid of the answer, but simultaneously hopeful that maybe it hadn't been so bad.

"A few hours," he said, deadpan.

He wanted you to respond, but you didn't.

"Three years," he whispered after a pause. "Three fucking years. Do you know how many vests that is? I ran out!"

"Is that what you're upset about?"

"Of course not! But being upset about fashion is better than being upset at you. Fuck if I'm going to chase you away with sincerity only moments after your miraculous return."

You couldn't tell him that you wouldn't have left him for sincerity -- not for lack of wanting to, but for the fact that his next embrace all but crushed your throat to his shoulder, making speech impossible while you were trapped there.

"I am never letting you out of my sight, again," he told you over your shoulder, and you could feel it in his touch that he was going to hold himself to that, and that you'd forever be safe from magical mazes and anything else that may threaten you.

When he pulled away, you could see a tear had streaked down his cheek, but he ignored it and held you by the shoulders at arm's length.

"Right. Well. You missed a lot, so I'm going to have to get you caught up. But first, we should get you to the infirmary just to make sure you didn't get fucked up in there somehow. And are you hungry? God, you must be hungry."

He paused, watching you intently. When he seemed satisfied with whatever it was he was looking at, he pulled you into a much softer hug and pressed his lips to your forehead. The two of you stayed like that for longer than you'd been in the maze (at least, compared to how you experienced it).

"I really missed you," he whispered against your forehead. Still, he didn't pull away.

He only pulled away when a voice called out for him from somewhere in the distance.

"Ah, that'll be Q. You'll like him, I think. He's obsessed with Fillory... he's probably here about some quest or something."

He sounded fond, but long-suffering. Kind of reminded you of how he talked about you... or, at least, how he used to. You weren't sure how he talked about you now. Did he talk about you?

"Actually, I think I was in Fillory for a minute while I was in the maze."

"Oh, don't tell him that. He'll never stop asking you about it."

"Noted... anything else?"

"Don't worry. My... friends... are harmless. You'll get along fine with them. Just humor them, I guess. Or don't. Frankly I don't care. I only care that I have you back."

You nodded and he led you to where a group of people about your age were gathered, with the exception of Margo; she was Eliot's age, whatever that was. It had been your age three years ago.

Magic was weird.

"Oh my GOD!" Margo all but shouted when she saw you, bouncing up in shock.

Everyone else looked at you curiously. Eliot introduced you and recognition dawned on all their faces. Well, most. Not Quentin's. He seemed perpetually lost.

"So you're the missing first year?" the one Eliot had introduced as Penny asked.

"We all thought he was crazy for waiting," Alice said.

That filled you with confidence.

Eliot shot her a look caught between shock and a glare, but said nothing. His grip around your waist tightened, though.

"Oh. Uh... well. I'm not missing anymore... and I'm glad he waited. 'Cause now I'm here." He beamed at you.

After a while, you grew tired, and Eliot pulled you away from the group and led you back to the Cottage and set you up in his room. You sank into the bed with a comforted sigh, a sound that turned into a happy moan when Eliot crawled into the bed and held you from behind.

"I missed this," he said softly.

You didn't know how to respond. For you, it'd only been a few hours since the two of you last shared a bed together.

"It's okay," he continued, kissing your cheek. "Things will get back to normal after a while." He seemed to be reassuring himself more than anything else, but you didn't argue. You wanted the same thing.

It wasn't long before sleep took over. And you slept well, for a solid ten hours.

And when you woke up, Eliot was right there waiting.

i know i've posted before about how against the idea of women (because marvel's full of cowards and doesn't want to have that conversation) telepaths being romantically/sexually attracted to scott summers i have been.

and while I know the actual intent behind this pattern on marvel's end and still disagree with that for obvious reasons, ...

In a vacuum? It makes sense.

Most xmen characters express what they're about on the surface, and there aren't too many layers hidden underneath. I can imagine telepaths in the world of marvel getting quickly bored by the people in that world not having anything more to offer than what's out front. Then you have a character like scott, who is designed to be deeply introspective anti-surface-read. A character the audience only gets the full picture of (/learns to appreciate) if the medium allows that glimpse into what's going on below the carefully controlled outer shell. That must be fascinating for a telepath (especially in marvel where you don't have many characters strictly adhering to this design). Not only that, it would take a telepath, or someone who is privy to what's going on below the surface (like, a non-telepath who is trusted enough for scott to open up to) to appreciate the full breadth of this character. So of COURSE the ones who react positively to the idea of scott summers would be those who know there's a lot of unseen shit going on there. It makes sense.

I went to the starkid reunion thing (I think?) back in 2015 (I think?) when I was a student at University of Michigan because they were performing there and I wasn't into them anymore by then but I knew my 10th grade self would shoot future me in the fucking face if I passed up that opportunity. UofM started being on my radar, as someone who lived their whole life in California, because of starkid. It was a very very VERY fun time going to that reunion. Hyperfixations never die, it's true
