Anyhoo I was talking to my brother about taz and it seems to me that their basic approach to representing any marginalized group (beyond the universal necessities of asking questions, listening, and apologizing) is to: a). remove the systematic oppression of that group from the world of their story, while b). giving them precisely the good things that oppression tries to withhold from them in stories and in reality.

The result is stories which promise diverse groups that the good things frequently denied them can be found even if it is through difficulty, without storytellers who haven’t experienced their trauma clumsily trying to re-enact it. And I’m not saying that is the only good way to do representation, but I’m pretty sure it’s central to how four self-proclaimed cis straight white guys who have had their share of slip-ups create worlds that feel safe and welcoming to a hugely diverse audience.

#taz #in other news #i disappeared from here partly because full-time work #but also because of how drastically good omens fandom grew and changed #which i do not mean as a dig at new fans!!#just that big and different = scary #but i've been feeling the urge to slip back in lately #so i'm gonna try rambling about my current fixation for a bit #without bothering to effectively tag it #and see if i can ease my way back in #as for this post #because i seem to be in a rambly mood tonight #i definitely #get super anxious about the idea of writing about people whose experiences i don't share #because i get paranoid about doing more harm than good #but i also super don't want to only write about people like me #and that's one of the reasons in the grab-bag of reasons i often just don't write #and watching them work through those anxieties and slip up #but ultimately do good has been oddly comforting?#not because their work is the pinnacle of good representation #but because they are a good but also achievable-feeling example #of telling stories about people different from themselves #and because of the way the podcast works #they don't spring fully-formed as paragrons #you get to watch them develop into those sorts of storytellers #okay ramble over
