FUCK THE REAPER TOMORROW!
(interview) I Explode Like;
Melbourne electronic-hardcore band I Explode Like have gone through many changes through out the bands existence, and with their drummer recently becoming their vocalist and a new member sitting behind the drums, the band have had to adapt big time. Drummer-come-vocalist Braden Geyer, had a chat about the change and all things I Explode Like...
Let’s start with the easy stuff, what is your name, what do you do in I Explode Like and your top 3 bands/artists right now? Good evening, my name is Braden and i sing in I Explode Like. At the moment would be Deadmau5, Architects and Emmure For anyone who hasn’t heard of your band before, how would you describe your sound in one sentence? The forever long sexual tension between Hardcore and Dance music! What is the story behind your band name? To be quite honest I don’t even know! All I know is that we were thinking of changing our name from “Dance the Architect” and our old keyboardist Brock came up with I Explode Like. So it doesn’t have meaning at all! IEL has gone through some massive changes lately. What was it like moving from drums to vocals? And how is Declan fitting in on the drums? For one hard, coming from never speaking on stage and doing light back up vox from time to time it’s very different, and I am starting to realize that I am not as fit as I thought! But I guess in time I will become better! Declan’s fitting in quite well, he’s come in and brought a new feel and a variety of writing styles and its making everything fresh and fun. Good to have him on board! Having had so many line up and sound changes go through IEL, how has the band evolved from the beginning? And would you say the current line up is the strongest the band has ever been? I think first off we are much better songwriters as a whole now, at the start we were young and didn’t really know what we were doing! We are still immature and stupid but I guess that what you got to expect going to an IEL show. We do believe it is the strongest we have ever been, we have always been searching for our right sound and I believe we are on the verge of finally finding it and concurring it! How did this massive change affect the way IEL go about writing and recording? We for a start we brought in another songwriter which changed up everything heaps, as for recording that hasn’t changed, except we have a better drummer now (laughs)
It must seem like forever-ago since you boys released the Oh!Nine Demo! How has the band changed since then? Both personally and sound wise? Oh god, so much! We still play one song off that cd, and when you practise/play it with our new stuff it doesn’t compare in my eyes! Still fun thought and the kids love it. As for the band changing I guess we have grown with each other and now know what we want as a band…but we are still stupid (laughs)
All the older tracks have been taken down of your facebook page. Does this mean they will never see a live show again? And what does a new and improved I Explode Like show look like? Of course not...well maybe. For now we are still playing 3 old songs and the rest of the set is new material but with our new cd coming out very soon that will change as we want to show off what we have been working on for so long! Our shows haven’t really changed, still have heaps of energy, still say the stupidest/worst things on stage…that won’t change I believe. What has been your favourite touring experience on the I Explode Like journey so far? Best would have been our first tour by far, went interstate and just partied up there…. Was more like a holiday then a tour…Fun times!
The new track “Transitions” has been getting super positive feedback. Did you boys expect that kind of reception with such big changes, or were you just hoping for the best? We weren’t too sure because we didn’t know how the public would react as they would have been used to Jesse but we have gotten massively positive feedback and we can only go forward from here! What is your favourite song to play live? And has that changed now that you have switched to vocals? Favourite song would be for me either our new song “Transitions” or “Tricky Tricky” love the kids screaming the words at me and having a good time. As a drummer I used to love to play our really old songs from Oh!Nine! Demo because they were fast and fun, angry wolf wasn’t that bad either! Who are some bands that influence I Explode Like’s sound? And you, personally as a musician? For IEL probably from TDWP to Attack Attack! To IFAF to Woe is me but that’s narrowing it down we all come from different musical background’s which help us write outside the box. What is your dream gig/tour lineup? Bands take notice!! IEL heading tour with Justin Bieber supporting with guest appearances but Fat Man Scoop, Fred Durst and Hannah Montana God…. That would be AWESOME!
What does the future hold for I Explode Like? New CD, Tours, More Tours
Where can people find out some more about your band and check out your tunes?
