The “ghost” timeline

I looked up Bai Ziqiu because I was curious if he was a real person. Another google search tells me that his Hikaru no Go counterpart, Honinbu Shuusaku, was a real Go player, so it made me doubly curious.

Turns out that Bai Ziqiu is fictional, but he’s based on a real Go player: Huang Longshi, whose birth name was Huang Qiu. The “Qiu” is the same character as Bai Ziqiu’s “qiu” and coincidentally, Chu Ying’s nickname for him was Xiao Bailong. Huang Longshi lived from around the 1650s-1700s, during Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1661-1722), and was considered a Go prodigy. That’s too much to be coincidental- Bai Ziqiu has got to be based on Huang Qiu.

So that puts the timeline of Chu Ying’s “life” at:

Born/”Died” between 502 and 557AD, during the Liang Dynasty 

My guess is that he lived during the earlier parts of it, before 549, since it was nonstop political/royal bloodshed after that, and the flashbacks hinted at a peaceful climate (or maybe Chu Ying only cares about Go and everyone was actually dying around him every 2 hours ajsdfasdf)

Entered the Goban for the next 1000+ years

“Summoned” by Bai Ziqiu circa 1660 until Bai Ziqiu’s death around, let’s say ~1680

Entered the Goban again for the next 300+ years

“Summoned” by Shi Guang in 1997, and minus the 6-year gap between 1997 and 2003(?), stayed with him until 2005/6 

So he lived for 28 years in the 6th century, ~20 years in the 17th century, and 8 years in the 20th/21st century if we don’t get too technical about the gap, with every other year being spent inside the Go board.

TLDR; after piecing his timeline together, I’ve come to the conclusion that Chu Ying is a remarkably well-adjusted individual LMAO. The idea of using this as a villain TM backstory didn’t even cross his mind

It does! I think its usually if someone texts you their name. Like if an unknown number texts you saying "Hey it's Mark from the bar," then it'll save the contact info as "Maybe: Mark." I think it also scans your email to see if the number is associated with any of those contacts.
