do you ever think about how Tsurumi, Tsukishima and Koito mirror an inverted fucked up version of the golden trio, where Tsurumi<->Sugimoto, Tsukishima<->Shiraishi, Koito<->Asirpa. I think about this a lot

Time for another one of my totally-not-asked-for, completely random, just-because-I-felt-like-it reviews!
I may have been binge-watching Netflix whilst I’ve been here (North American Netflix has so much more stuff than back home!). And I discovered a Netflix-original series that I really love, and you should definitely watch.
3% is a fascinating dystopian drama series about a group of 20-year-old people fighting to prove that they are ‘worthy’ to go to the Offshore, a seemingly idyllic, futuristic world where everything is so much better than it is here… as far as we know.
But everything is not as it seems. Of course, there are those who do not believe in the Process, who think that segregation based on ‘worth’ and the ability to pass a series of arbitrary tests is unfair. These people fight for the Cause, and are determined to undermine the Process and overthrow the system.
There is also apparently unease and tension in the world of the Offshore, too. Although we never see this fabled place, through the story of those running the Process and their contact with those in charge on the Offshore, we know it’s not quite as perfect as everyone seems to believe.
I’m just putting it out there, this is an amazing series for many reasons. It’s not quite your typical teenager-fighting-against-the-evil-dictator dystopia, but it will still definitely appeal to those who like that sort of thing. There is more world-building in the first three minutes of episode one than some series or films have in the first half an hour, and the diversity is beautiful. Strength of belief in opposition to understanding of reality is explored, as is the question of which side is truly right, when neither is clearly ‘good’ or ‘evil’. We also have some real, insightful, smart representation and questioning of disability, and some great complexity and depth to the characters.
Fair warning though – it’s violent. Not everyone makes it through the Process, but that’s not just because not everyone is worthy. Massive warnings for suicide, blood, physical violence, and general death (as well as one scene where it looks like there might be a rape, but it doesn’t happen). However, I wouldn’t say the violence is gratuitous. It all makes sense in the context of the story, and is used to explore how the human mind works, especially when put under immense pressure to succeed when you don’t quite know how.
This is Netflix’s first Brazilian TV series, and in my opinion it’s very well done. Those who dismiss foreign-language films because they don’t like reading subtitles don’t know what they’re missing, and I would definitely recommend 3% (especially if you’re learning Portuguese).
Season one deals with the Process itself, but after a surprising ending, the show has left an intriguing cliff-hanger and an interesting dynamic to lead off from at the start of the next series, which I expect will again deviate from the standard tropes of dystopian fiction. I for one can’t wait.
