She didn’t even act surprised when he walked in. She seemed relieved, not to see him, but to free herself from her grounding at the kitchen table waiting for him, underneath one of the lights that was never turned off in their apartment. Pamphlets for the vacation they still hadn’t gone on littered the surface underneath a bottle of wine and an empty glass.

The idea of looking at her repulsed him. Not because she wasn’t any less beautiful than the angel he promised his entire life to, but looking at her shrank all the good memories away and every negative, intrusive thought grew into one giant flashing neon sign that screamed at him, you don’t deserve her.

He wordlessly continued down the hall, fumbling for the key to his study, her footsteps dancing up behind him as she gripped his shoulders, standing on her tip-toes to attempt a kiss on his cheek. He winced, hoping she wasn’t turned off by the smell when her lips hardly touched his skin.
