merthur headcanon:

arthur and merlin adopt a bunch of kids. like one time they went and beat the shit out of some slave traders, and this one kid who’d been taken was an orphan so they adopted them. they went to war with a corrupt kingdom and there was a kid, barely ten, who had been given a blade and told to sneak into camelot’s camp or the corrupt king would kill the kid’s younger sibling. the kid is able to sneak as far as the tent(they’re a clever kid), but merlin does catch them and is internally screaming about why the fuck is there a small child with a knife in the tent, but externally he’s able to calm down the kid and get them to explain. the next day camelot mounts a massive attack on the capital of the corrupt kingdom and they win and both kids get adopted. one day they’re walking through a city from a country they just brought into The United Kingdoms and this homeless kid tries to pickpocket them. merlin and arthur stop them and ask wtf and the kid explains that their family is gone and they’ve been on the streets trying to survive. ADOPTED.

and camelot’s halls that were so cold and cruel when arthur was a child are now filled with warmth and the laughter of children. and merlin and arthur do a good job with these kids, making sure that they’re just and kind and know the power they wield as members of the royal household and the responsibility that comes with that power. and these kids who’ve come from hell are able to heal and grow. they are the children of Arthur Pendragon and Merlin Emrys, and they love their found family. and merlin and arthur teach love these kids and make sure they never feel like they’re alone or unloved. and the kids flourish. the child they rescued from slave traders makes freedom for all their goal in life, and as they grow older they become a great warrior to defend their friends, their family, and the people of their kingdom from any who would take their lives or their freedom. their sibling who used to steal taught them that not every slave wears chains, some are bound by poverty. so they defend the poor and constantly search for ways to raise them up. they do not stand for injustice, and root out corruption like a gardner does a bunch of weeds. the child who came to them with intent to kill helps a lot with rooting out corruption. they’re known for their stealth and wits, able to sneak around and appear harmless while gathering information. their younger sibling grows up warm and happy and full of joy and love. they become the precious light of the kingdom, a beacon of the golden age. they bring joy and kindness wherever they go and is particularly gifted at understanding petitioners’ needs and getting them what they need. the child who used to steal grows up and makes it their mission to let no one go hungry. even as a teen they regularly brought out food and supplies to the people of the kingdom, always offering a warm meal and a warm smile and ready to make anyone laugh with their quick humor.

and i just like to think that merlin and arthur adopt a bunch of kids and they love them unconditionally and raise them with the help of all their friends and family and the kids grow up to be just as good of rulers as their parents and run the kingdom together, even if only one wears the crown.

it’s even better because like diego is prooobably the most physically threatening sibling? like luther is stronger but he exudes an air of nonviolence once he’s back on earth and diego actively trains to stay in shape to kick ass
