Summary: My take on what could have happened in that canoe. Cyrus wants to know about Jonah’s mysterious new crush (and distract him from their impending doom), Jonah is an anxious wreck. Fluffy jyrus goodness.
Notes: I haven’t watched anything past A Walker To Remember, but I have kept up on some spoilers, so this is semi-canonical.
Cyrus shivered in the cool breeze off the lake, slowly shifting his weight in the canoe, careful not to move too quickly. It was a beautiful afternoon, but the tranquility of the scene was disrupted by the tension radiating off of Cyrus’s companion.
“Jonah, we’re gonna be fine,” Cyrus imitated the soothing voice he always heard his parents use on their patients. “Someone will find us.”
“I know, I just,” Jonah sighed and slowly turned around in the boat so he was facing Cyrus. “I can’t really help stressing out about things.”
Cyrus frowned, but nodded sympathetically. “Well, why don’t we talk about something to keep your mind of it.” He really wanted to do anything he could to ease his friend’s anxiety.
“Okay, what do you want to talk about?” Jonah asked.
Cyrus shrugged. “Uh, well I heard you have a crush,” he wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. “Wanna tell me about it?”
Jonah blanched. “What?! How did you know that?” His voice came out shrill and strained.
“Oh, shoot,” Cyrus groaned. “I wasn’t supposed to know that? Andi told me, so I figured it was okay, I’m so sorry.”
Jonah seemed to calm down; he gave Cyrus a weak smile. “It’s okay. It’s just something I’m not…super prepared to talk about. It’s, uh,” he hesitated. “Different from my other crushes.”
Cyrus caught something in Jonah’s tone that made his heart stutter. Does he mean different how I think he means different? Cyrus didn’t know exactly how he felt about that. done his best to tramp down his feelings for Jonah, and for awhile he thought he had. Until summer rolled around and they were apart for two months. He knew absence made the heart grow fonder, but it seemed the longer they were apart, the more he thought about Jonah.
“Jonah,” Cyrus started slowly. “I’m not, I’m not entirely sure what you mean by different. But if you mean what I think you mean, I…” he took a deep breath. “I want you to know that you can tell me, and I promise I’ll understand.”
“Cyrus…” Jonah swallowed thickly.
“Jonah, please, I’m trying to do a thing here, and it’s really hard, because I don’t know if I have this right at all, but I-I want you to know.”
“Know what?”
Cyrus took a deep breath. “The real reason Iris and I broke up.”
Jonah spoke quietly, barely more than a whisper. “What?”
“Jonah, I’m gay.” The words tumbled out and were met with a silence that seemed to stretch on for an eternity. Cyrus’s stomach flipped and twisted itself into knots.
“Yeah,” Cyrus nodded. “So, if there’s anything that you might want to tell me…You know you can.”
“Cyrus, look,” Jonah bit his lip. “You might’ve been right about what I meant when I said different, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to talk about it, with you or anybody else. I’m still figuring things out.”
“I know, I…” Cyrus shook his head. “I didn’t mean to pressure you. I just wanted you to know that you could talk to me, about that stuff you’re figuring out.”
Jonah considered for a moment before he spoke. “Well, okay. I think…That I like a guy, but I know that my feelings for Andi, and for Amber, at least at first, were real. Which is confusing, I guess.”
“You can like both,” Cyrus said gently. “You could be bi.”
“I know,” Jonah tapped his finger on the boat. “But bisexual doesn’t really feel right, and neither does pansexual. And I don’t know what that means. For a long time, I thought it meant that I was straight, even though I liked this boy.”
“How—How long have you liked this guy?” Cyrus blurted, before clamping a hand over his mouth. “Sorry—that’s not the point.”
Jonah chuckled. “No, it’s okay. I’ve liked him for awhile. But it took me a long time to fully come to terms with it.”
“Totally.”
“It was also hard to realize it, because for awhile I thought I just really loved being his friend. That’s kind of a thing with me, I don’t always know the difference between my platonic and romantic feelings, or how that shift happens.”
Cyrus processed for a moment and then spoke slowly. “Have you looked into the aromantic spectrum? Maybe you’re demiromantic. You need to have an emotional bond with someone before you can feel that way about them.”
Jonah was silent for a moment. “Yeah, I…I’ve thought about that.”
“Why do I sense a ‘but’ coming?”
“It doesn’t quite fit me either. I mean, it does, I think. I don’t know.”
“Well,” Cyrus smiled. “You don’t have to know right away. You don’t even have to know ever. Some people find labels help them feel more valid, but if you know what you feel and you’re confident it, don’t bother with a label just to make it easier for other people to understand you.”
“You’re right,” Jonah gave Cyrus a small smile, and Cyrus’s chest flooded with warmth. He loved that smile. It was more real than the big Jonah Beck grin. “Thanks for talking with me, Cy. You’re a good friend.
“Anytime.” Cyrus returned Jonah’s smile. “So, tell me about this guy.” Cyrus didn’t really want to hear about the guy Jonah liked, but he hoped the question would bring some levity to the conversation.
Jonah blushed. “Uh…Well, he’s smart and funny and kind, and maybe the most loyal person I’ve ever met.”
“All good traits,” Cyrus nodded approvingly, ignoring the ache in his chest.
“He’s cute, too. He always looks so put together.” Jonah continued “And he’s got the most adorable laugh.”
“Wow,” Cyrus was really regretting asking about this guy. He sounded perfect. There was no way he could compete with that. “You must really like him.”
“I do,” Jonah said gently. “What, um, what about you?”
“Me?”
“Do you like anyone?”
“Jonah,” Cyrus shook his head. “This is turning into a gossip session.”
“C’mon,” Jonah crossed his arms, “I opened up to you, and you won’t do the same for me? Even while were trapped alone in the middle of a lake?”
“Alright,” Cyrus sighed. “There is a guy.”
“Go on.”
“He’s an athletic, and charming, and his smile could light up any room,” Cyrus felt his cheeks burning as he spoke. “Oh, and he’s got gorgeous green eyes.”
“You must really like TJ.”
“What?” Cyrus was taken aback. “What are you talking about?”
“The guy you’re talking about, it’s TJ,” Jonah said simply. “It’s pretty obvious.”
“Wh-I-TJ?” Cyrus sputtered. “I don’t like TJ, Jonah. He’s just a good friend. Why would you even think that?”
“You spend so much time with him,” Jonah shrugged. “When you told me you liked someone, I just kind of assumed. Plus, you like an athletic guy with green eyes. TJ is an athletic guy with green eyes.”
“Yeah, so are you!” Cyrus blurted, immediately clamping a hand over his mouth.
“Me?” Jonah’s voice was soft, almost awe-struck, if Cyrus didn’t know any better.
“I mean, uh, not that I, er, that is,” Cyrus choked on his words.
“Cyrus, do you have feelings for me?” Jonah spoke slowly, uncertainly.
“I…” Cyrus didn’t know what to say. He didn’t want to lie, but he wasn’t sure he could handle the rejection he was sure was coming. He sighed. “Yes.”
Jonah’s eyes widened. “You…”
“I understand that you don’t feel the same, and I don’t want to make things weird, so if you want we can just forget this ever—”
“Cyrus,” Jonah’s expression had melted into a grin. “You’re an idiot.”
“I am?”
“I’m crazy about you.”
“You are?” Cyrus could’ve pinched himself. “But you’re…and I’m…”
“You’re the guy who brings water and sunscreen to all my frisbee games and even practices, who supports the team more than anyone else. You’re the guy who has always been there for me. And you’re the best dressed, funniest, smartest person I know,” Jonah took Cyrus’s hand. “I really like you.”
Cyrus’s heart was in his throat. “I really like you, too.”
Jonah chuckled. “Heck of a first date, huh?”
Cyrus rolled his eyes. “I’m enjoying the view.” He didn’t mean the lake.
Jonah blushed. “Cyrus?”
“Yeah?”
“Can I kiss you?”
Cyrus’s eyes widened, but he nodded and moved forward. Jonah did the same, and soon their noses were touching. Jonah closed the final gap between them, and it was like someone struck a match against Cyrus’s heart—heat radiated out from his chest, all through his body. He moved, trying to get close to Jonah, to wrap his arms around the other boy, but he moved too fast.
The boat capsized, sending both boys into the frigid lake.
“Like I said,” Jonah sighed. “Heck of a first date.”

Hello once again, friends! Apologies for my untimely departure. (For like the third time) I'm currently working through some difficult things, but it's nothing to worry about!
Now, as you all can see, I've reopened my ask box. Now, you could ask questions about various things, for example, if you have a writing prompt, or just a simple question, put them in there and I'll get to them as soon as I possibly can.
It’s ok, take as long as you need, we’ll wait for your return. Remember to take care of yourself on your break! -🌖anon
Thank you 🌖! I was able to rest up and actually get quite a bit done, so I think it was productive and good, even if it took some unfortunate irl stuff (that I don't really want to get into) to make me take a break.
