I did the art summary thing.
So I went to the doctor
After the ninth night in a row of no sleep, bursting into tears randomly and near constant nausea I gave in and went to see my doctor. Unfortunately my doctor was away and I’ve dealt with her locum before and didn’t like him much. But he listened to me. I said I didn’t want to go back on sleeping tablets full time and he agreed it would be a shame since I’ve been doing so well with no meds for well over a year.
Just a by the by I am not against taking medication. You need what you need and that’s good. But I have never found a combination that worked for me after trying for years so in the end I turned to different methods and that works for me now, for the most part. That’s a personal choice but if I had found something that worked long term that didn’t leave me with debilitating side effects I would have taken it.
Anyway. He listened to me. Prescribed me five sleeping tablets to get my patterns back in order and told me to try to stay awake and not nap today if I could.
And then. He leaned in and said, very gently. “I can see you’re exhausted but you’ve been doing so well. It’s all going to be fine.”
And sure, maybe it was a well delivered platitude but I needed to hear it right then.
With all the stories about doctors who don’t listen or who are dismissive and arrogant out there I want to put this out there.
Today my doctor listened to me. Prescribed what I needed. Wrote me a sick note for school that cited abdominal pain because in his words “what they don’t know won’t hurt them, your business is your own.” And reassured me with kind words.
