Besides saying your Australian, what are your real origins or family from?
My real origins are Australia… I was born and bred here, as were my parents and my grandparents. How long do you need to be in a country before you can say you’re from that country?
Family tree wise, I am third generation Australian on my maternal side, then it head across to English, Irish and Welsh. I am fifth generation Australian on my paternal side, before it heads to Scottish, Welsh and French.
My children are able to claim convict ancestry through their father.
I can trace my direct family tree back about 50 generations, throughout Europe and Britain (my family comes from a long line of scholars who like to write things down).
But, I am Australian.

RACISM ENCOUNTERS
A regular customer was making a complaint to us yesterday over the phone, in regards to the nursing home that we service because her mother is there. She made mention of how she dislikes the nurses there because they’re all Asian and it’s difficult to communicate what you want to them. She even imitated an Asian accent to further justify her reason of dislike.
I asked her to come into the store to sort out the issues she were facing and to ask for either me or the manager. We are both Asian. Actually, the three main pharmacists at our store are all Chinese.
She came into the store and asked if I was the person she was speaking to on the phone. She obviously seemed surprised by my exterior not matching the accents she had in mind for an Asian. I recognised her as a difficult customer too and I don’t remember faces at all, unless they’re super annoying.
I dealt with all her matters and everything was sorted (took long enough). Doubt it’d change her opinion on her dislike of Asians though.
It’s funny how she blames the miscommunication with the nurses on the Asian accents. I’ve had no trouble communicating with these same nurses over the phone. The nurses are all qualified and speak English well enough. Therefore, if anything, she must be the one that is being difficult and demanding of the nurses, rather than a miscommunication issue.
------------------------------------
This isn’t the first time I’ve come across something like this. Last time, a male caucasian carer came in to sort out a medication issue and thought it was appropriate to mention to me (an Asian) that the nurses (who were all higher qualified than him) were all female Asians who were difficult to understand and communicate with, because you tell them one thing and they mistake it for something else. The example he gave me was when he used some old fashioned term that I’d never heard of (calling a fellow nurse a sister, was mistaken as an actual sister).
He spoke so slowly and in circles, repeating the same issue over and over, that I thought he clearly had no idea what he was talking about in regards to the medication chart. By the end of the conversation, which took an unnecessary 15 minutes too long, I realised that perhaps he spoke so slowly and in circles because he thought me being an Asian couldn’t understand what he was talking about. Or he could’ve just been mentally slow and incapable. He also called half an hour later to relay the same message to a different staff member because I must’ve been incapable of understanding his query due to being Asian.
------------------------------------
Just today I gave someone a generic medication without reading their history of notes, because it was super busy. She complained to the staff and said I did it because I was Asian :\ The assistant told me this and I said, it wasn’t because I was Asian, it was because I stressed and didn’t read the notes - or it could’ve been because of my Asian eyes not being able to open wide enough.
------------------------------------
This was a random joke from a friendly customer, but he asked whether my Asian coworker and I were from the same Chinese dynasty, because we share the same surname :\ I had the most confused look on my face because I honestly have no information on my family’s history.

I find it weird that people would judge our abilities and the service we give based on our ethnicity. If they are unsatisfied for any reason, they are often quick to blame our ethnicity as the problem.
