This is the inside of my laptop. I had a shot bearing in my left fan (which made a terrible grinding noise), so replaced it today. Unfortunately, the new fan made a sound of its own, this time a weird scraping. Obviously, a bit of space needed to be placed between the fan blades and... something.

Thankfully, I always hold onto interesting materials like these foam packaging inserts, just in case I might someday need them for something.

I wasn’t really clear on what was scraping against what, so I first tried the easy solution of putting foam spacers between the cooling system housing and the bottom case of the laptop. This... severely worsened the scraping sound, making it louder and more constant. Well, it was unlikely to be the correct solution, but you might as well try the easy one first, right?

My next attempt was to try putting a spacer between the fan and the cooling system housing. Using the old fan as a guide, I cut the thinner foam to shape and punched out some screw holes.

Et voila, a perfect fit! As it turns out, the fan touching the housing was indeed the cause of the noise, and the custom foam gasket immediately put a stop to it. Even better, I now have a really solid example to cite whenever someone says, “why would you want to keep that, it’s garbage, just throw it away”.

In case anyone is wondering if I got caught like Angela did I'd tell the guy I was taking selfies in the bathroom mirror and that's why I was in there so long. And I'd have the selfies to back it up

I think my favorite smartphone app as a writer is the baby name app.  There are a whole bunch of different ones, and they’re just so handy.  You can specify by gender and country of origin or popularity.  It’ll tell the the meaning of the name.  Some even let you save your “favorite” names in lists.  When you’re waiting for the bus or have a short period of downtime, you can scroll through names and save the ones you like the sound of.  Later when you’re writing and you need a name for the new character that just showed up, pull up your list and pick one.  It’s pretty darn useful.

Sad panda doesn't work on my computer anymore for whatever reason (I might try resetting the plug-in) but it still works on my phones so... I've been... finding artists on pixiv and then finding them on sad panda
