"I NEVER HAD TO CHOOSE AT ALL" EXACTLY. EXACTLY
2026 is Year of the Writer
Story Time
I have always been sort of anti-goals and more pro-vibes when it comes to writing. However, that can't be the case if some day I do want to publish my work, if I want to release stories out in the world not for the sake of monetary value, but just because I want to.
Even on AO3, I'm not the most popular writer there is. But I still write because this is what I studied for, this is what I enjoy most in this world and the reason I live and breathe.
If I actually want to accomplish the dreams I have, then I have to force it out, even when I don't want to. I have to set a goal because after nearly a decade after graduating from English and I still haven't published a book--it's become very clear I need to start setting up that goal, setting up that habit.
And guys, 2026 is actually off to a good fucking start. I set a very small goal because I also didn't want to burn myself out from writing too much because I have done that to myself. And I'm so close to it.
The Goal
I set a goal of only 30,000 words in this month alone and already I find myself so close to that goal. I only write 1600 words a day and I know that sounds like A LOT. But the more I do it, the easier this goal becomes to obtain, even when I'm stuck on a part of the story and I don't know which way to go with it. I used to only write 300 words in 15 minutes, now it has easily gone up to 500 words.
Even if there are part I end up scraping, I keep it in the storyline and just keep going. Or even re-write it because I am still writing up to the goal.
It's still the same concept of getting a kudos or acknowledgement within the community, but I make intrinsic for me, seeing the numbers go down actually encourages me to keep going.
As long as I keep pace with this, I even get to reward myself at the end of this journey IF I write 50,000 words and it's start to look possible.
TLDR
The point is, if you want to write more, you're discouraged by the lack of kudos and comments--sometimes you really gotta do it for yourself if you love the craft enough. Sometimes you gotta set up goals to be able to really write what you want to write.
Community is important, yes. But the self is just as important.
