Dear Mom,

HOW DO I EVEN BEGIN? You have done so much for me. You anddad moved from Canada back to Hong Kong so you could have me. You gave up yourcareer so you could raise me with your own hands. You gave me as much time andattention as you possibly could. You fostered my curiosity as a child andwatched it bloom as I grew up. You tirelessly provided me with all sorts ofartistic projects and games and nurtured my love for art. You have done SO MUCHAND I HAVE GIVEN BACK SO LITTLE.

I know sometimes your need for hygiene drives me nuts, and Iyell at you when I think you’re trying to control my life. But you never gettoo outrageous with your demands and I know you do it because you want what’sbest for me.

Mom, you taught me how to love math. Though that love’s beenbeaten down and trodden on by years of academia, it’s still there. You gave meall those exercise books and made it into a game. You’re a brilliant teacher, helpingme understand math and physics concepts when I’m stuck in school. I am stillvery impressed at how you managed to teach me the early parts of my IB physicscourse just by reading the textbook alone. Wow. You have also been aninvaluable sounding board for ideas when I was freaking out over my physics andmath IAs as well as my visual art comparative study. I wouldn’t have been ableto do as well as I have without you! When I walked on stage at my graduationceremony for my excellence in math award, I thought of you. It’s all because ofyou!

Mom, you’ve been hurt so much by the world around you. Youare too kind, too easily taken advantage of by the ones who are supposed tolove you. I said I disliked our relatives because they’re “fake” but I dislikethem even more because of what they have done to you. I don’t know if youremember telling me this but I know exactly why I am an only child. You didn’twant history to repeat itself.

But mom, an amazing parent like you could never repeat thathistory. When I say you’re the best mom ever I truly mean it from the bottom ofmy heart. I told you you might never be a grandmother and part of the reason isbecause I don’t think I could be even a fraction as great a mother as you are.

I’m eighteen now, mom! I’m about to leave your nest. I don’tknow if I’m ready but I’ll do my best to make you proud! And when I’m able, Iwant to support you like you’ve done since the second I was born. I am so luckyand blessed to have a mom like you in my life. Moms like you are not so easilyfound.

It’s been some time since I’ve said “I love you” out loud. Youknow I’m not very good at expressing my emotions in person. But please know -

I love you so much, more than I love anyone else on thisplanet,
