QUESTION: I’ve been a lawful permanent resident in the US for almost 5 years. My mother petitioned for me to become a lawful permanent resident, but my grandmother was a sponsor and filed an Affidavit of Support for me. Recently my grandmother and I have had a falling out. Can she withdraw her sponsorship for me? If she does, do I lose my green card?

Packet 3 Info: Filing for a Green Card for Your Korean Spouse
Some of my followers were asking about immigration stuff so I thought I’d include this list to. It’s better to just get this all done in advance. Don’t wait till you get your Packet 3 in the mail. Start ASAP so that when you get your Packet 3 you can just register for your interview right away. There’s a lot less needed for this part, so it shouldn’t take you too long to get together. If you were living and working in Korea before getting married, make sure that you filed your taxes for the entire time you were living abroad. If you didn’t just go ahead and submit for the years missing. Print out the returns that you mailed in, and show that to the immigration office. It takes time but it’s not that bad. I used turbo tax for the first year I was missing, and then just used that as a template for doing the other years. I can’t believe I didn’t realize that I was supposed to file. I had to do 5 years of backtaxes DOH!
Below is what I brought with me to our interview.
The items listed below have been provided in accordance with the Packet 3 instructions and checklist.
PASSPORT: Signed passport that will be valid for at least 8 months at the time of visa issuance. Obviously, this means your husband’s/partner’s passport.
PHOTOGRAPHS: 2 photos taken within 6 months, with white background (5cm X 5cm sized).

BIRTH CERTIFICATE (w/ translations): Basic Certificate (기본증명서) and Family Relation Certificate (가족관계 증명서)

*Also Included: Bank statements from Chase and Citibank(Korea) showing savings’ balance. This was helpful because my balance was quite high. Obviously if you don’t have much in your savings, I wouldn’t bring that.
I-864A for (Household Member of Sponsor) with 2013 Tax Returns, Proof of Citizenship (passport) and W2s. I didn’t end up needing this. I thought my Korean income wouldn’t be counted, but it turns out that they were okay with it. You might need this if your income (in Korea or America) isn’t enough.
Proof of Relationship & Shared Household: Copy of Birth Certificate, US Drivers License, and Address listed on Pamela’s W2s Also not needed because I didn’t need the Household Member’s income.
