This looks like it might have some fun episodes-- Paul Giamatti getting to do science fiction, etc. People online get pretty glib and dismissive about this show-- it had the arc of anything fun anymore, initial excitement followed by dreary backlash by boring people. At least it wasn't The Anora Discourse (TM), or the Licorice Pizza Discourse, etc., etc., etc., it's all so fucking boring. But the funny part being in real life, it's just more stark now than ever, tech bros are just decimating society while doing seig heil's in the open?? Which I get doesn't make the show's writing or cinematography or whatever better but... like I do kind of think it's good there's some show that was like "hey you guys notice what's going on". (I think even the supposedly "bad era" of the show had fun episodes that I liked, though, but who am I).
It's like that time Matt Zoller Seitz and other film guys went like "oh Adam McKay made a movie about climate change *rolls eyes* I'm too good for that" and then like there were 50,000 tornados ripping through Kansas last year, surrender dorothy. I don't think having basically good and accurate themes makes things less mediocre, sure, that Adam McKay movie just didn't bang. But lots of things are mediocre-- oh well. I don't know how to articulate this but at the end of the day, there's something sort of "I'm a bored French king and you've failed to entertain me waaaah" about a certain kind of talk which just feels fucking decadent, you know? Is Matt Zoller Seitz not amused enough while the fucking doors are getting kicked in?? Oh no! Oh no who will think of Seitz??? Somebody get him a pillow for his head. I don't know-- I like people being critical of their media. But. I always took that to mean being interested in how a piece of media fits within its context, and not just being like "I demand more cake and dances at Versailles!!!" Or how do you do that without being the latter guy, you know? I don't know. Anyways-- I hope Peter Capaldi defeats his phone.
