Surprisingly, they actually did leap her! Though I'm uncertain she would've realistically survived for the exact reason you gave, but oh well. it is what it is

Elwin makes a note of it in her medical files in Unlocked:

"Gave Sophie a sedative so we could leap her safely to Everglen" (34).

If they couldn't have leapt her, I'd imagine they'd have used gnomish travel--like they did after the ogre attack in Havenfield, where the gnomes made cots/stretchers the roots carried through the earth.

"Can you guys rig something to help us transport them through the earth? I'm afraid they might be too weak for a light leap." The gnomes got to work, weaving fallen branches into nest-like cots. (Lodestar 493)

Personally I think that's more realistic for the situation :)

I think the idea gives him too much power. The reason he's scary is because he's just A Guy -- or, at the very least, he used to just be A Guy. He's such an incredible human villain, though simultaneously he's now lost almost all of his inherently human qualities. The point of him is that he's a human who never once saw beyond his own nose.
