Cheap glittery-fairy movie trumps expensive glittery-vampire movie
My niece is around 3 years old and forces me to watch Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia. I tend to doze during the movie, but I have noticed during a few of the viewings, even though it by all probability had the tiniest production value it had a more compelling story and main character than Twilight. And Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia is a goddamn sequel!
The story is that the main character's (male) friend had been kidnapped so a berry that gives undisputable power can be found and given to the bad guy of the earlier movie. Main character have to save the friend. Perhaps not the most interesting story, but compared to all the Twilight movies, it does have a story, not just something to meander around, and it actually have tension. Rising tension actually! And the whole, it was a male that was kidnapped, I could see easily how they could have changed it to a female, but they let a male being the kidnapée.
And the main charcter. Even though the character could not exist in the real world without bending in half because how it is built, the main character does actually have a character. She is willing to sacriface her wings (she is a fairy, sorry that I didn't tell before, but the title was fairytopia after all), wings she actually had to work to earn, because she had been born without them. Meaning she was willing to sacriface something she earned, something she had a complex over in the movie before. And she does not end in a relationship with the male friend, that was a prince. Instead she showes the male friend, and another of her friends, that they like eachother. She does not need a boyfriend, and she wants her friends to be happy. What was Bellas personality besides I-need-Edward-if-I-can't-have-him-I'll-toss-myself-of-a-cliff and weird faces?
So a Barbie-movie beats a movie for young adults. BARBIE!
