"baby pearl" | LL ep 5
the untapped comedy potential in s29 with both dylan and iainâs return drives me insane, i canât believe thereâs just NO acknowledgement of how they know each other.
âlike⌠you leave the hospital you work in with the love of your life bc itâs too painful to see her with her new boyfriend. two years later, you come back bc sheâs moved on!!! donât worry though, her affair partner works there now.
on the other hand, you follow the ~one who got away~ to her new hospital, knowing full well she went there to be with her husband. it ends badly and you both leave. you come back bc sheâs moved on!!! three weeks later, her ex-husband shows up.
this goes completely unmentioned by everyone.
never have I gone from đ to đ faster than watching Iain call Stevie selfish (???) then immediately bashing her door down no hesitation the second he heard her
That episode was a shock and hearbreaking
But if it means Iain finally breaks up with Faith I'm all for itđ
âI Know The Endâ
(iâm dyslexic so this is bad..)
Maevie Nash the younger sister of Stevie Nash gets attacked at the hospital defending Charlie from his stabbing. This is set place during S38 EP11-12 âCharlieâ.
Maevie was an accident, born 20 years after her eldest sister but somehow a black sheep in her fatherâs eyes. Emma was the favourite, anyone with eyes could see that. Especially Stevie and Maevie. That didnât taint either relationship, in fact Stevie felt more maternalistic if anything for her youngest sister. Maevie despite being basically raised by the âcoldâ women was the opposite of Stevie, a people pleaser at that. After Emma died Maevie became even more off a shell of the person she uses to be.
Maevie always felt like a wave that crashed and melted on the shore
Maevie caught glance off her sister in conversation with Charlie, sheâd been deeply concerned for her since the incident prior. Not that it changed Maevie perspective much, she remembered the deep conversations with Stevie as a teen, talking on a rusty swing set.
Noticing her on edge behaviour and her drive to protect the hospital staff. Maevie being the Sociotropy she is always kept one eye on her. Even though she knew Stevie could handle herself just fine.
Shaking herself from the trance sheâd entered, she began guided her body towards Stevie before the elevators could enclose.
âHey!â Maevie echoed toward Stevie as she parted with Charlie. âI just wanted to wish you luck, not that you need it.â her words lay on Stevieâs chest heavier than Maevie could ever know.
âThank you, come find me after?â Stevieâs words were more off a plead, a plead to be in her sisters present. Stevie was always Conscientious towards Maevie, it is worsening after Emma. Especially as Maevie pushed herself away from those around her.
Maevie silently ended the conversation kissing Stevie cheek. Stevie hated the affection but sucked it up for Maevie sake.
-
Maevie didnât know or care how long shed been there but there she was slouched across the ED counter, tiredness filling her bones, a failed attempt to drown out the chaos around her. She regretted her sleepless night.
The ding off the elevator was like a rough hand slapping her back to reality until she realised it was Stevie.
âYouâre back? How did it go? Did they clear you? Did they fire you? Iâll quit if they have.â Maevieâs miniature ramble spread with a worrisome tone.
âGeez kid. How much caffeine have you consumed? they- âStevie began but her response was cut off momentarily by Dylan
âOh, Stevie, will you tell me that the cleared you for work?â
âUh, sort of, kind off. But theyâve got, like- â
âSort of kind of sounds good. That sounds like a yes. Weâve got an RTC. Details still coming in but think we can expect multiple casualties. Now, we need all the doctors we can get. Iâve obviously called for an emergency locum, but they havenât arrived yetâ
As if on cue another voice entered the room
âSorry Iâm late, timekeeping was never my strongest point. well, I know how much you love a surpriseâ
Maevieâs head was spinning in circles to follow the conversation, dispute it having zero connection. Her last movement landed on Stevie, leaning into her shoulder from behind. Her head throbbing from an oncoming headache, silently reminding herself to ask Stevie for some paracetamol.
She was used to the headaches; they were a part of her personality.
âPsst, who is that?â Stevie shrugged unknown to the lady who clearly knew Charlie and Dylan. Maevie found herself leaning forehead directly onto Stevieâs shoulder, it drummed against her temple.
Her head lulled forward as Stevie introduced herself to the lady, nearly causing whiplash from the sudden movement. Before she could recover Stevie was bundling her scrubs at her side, pulling her close to the lady.
âZoe Hanna, this is Maevie Nash.â Maevie in response stood there, awkwardly lifting her hand to wave at her. Maevie in-fact hated public interactions, which was weird considering her work of choice. But shed always wished the ultraviolet would cover her up.
âOh, Dr Nash. The great Dr Nash sisters. Charlie speaks so highly of you bothâ
Maevie knew it was mainly aimed towards Stevie but the thought of Charlie speaking so highly of her gave her a sense of pride.
Maevie observed the current situation as her sister began talking âI- Iâm going to go to get changed, why donât you guys take resus?
âAre you sure?â The lady Maevie has recently been introduced to said unsure. Stevie began making her way to the staff room, leading to Maevie clinging onto her arm.
âWhy are you following me, Mae?â Stevie questioned her younger sister who was still clung to her arm with an iron grip.
âCanât a girl want to be in her sisterâs presents?â Maevie said with a grin
Stevie seeing straight past her sweet talk and narrowed her eyes at her âMhm, what do you want?â
âCan I please with a cherry on top stop at yours tonight? My roommates staying at a friend and Iâll be all on my lonesome. Do you want me to get taken by the ghosts?â Maevie dramatically begged Stevie
âFine, but you are buying us a Chinese on your way homeâ Maevie groaned a light âfineâ
little did they know Maevie wouldnât be making it home that night but rather end up with a pair off cracked lips.
âAny chance you have some magic headache cure?â Maevie followed her groan
Stevieâs head spun concerned before throwing a couple paracetamols her way
âYou drinking enough water?â Stevie questioned her
âYes momâ Maevie rolled her eyes
âAlso, you know how you love me so much? and how much I love coffee? - âStevie instantly cut her off with a sharp âNo, I can see you physically vibrating youâve passed your limit, properly why your head feels the way it doesâ her hands finding Maevie shoulders to steady her.
Stevie kissed the shorter girls head and rushing off to get changed. âJust follow me today, Mae, with everything thatâs happened. Iâd say you can be my shadow but whatâs new?â Stevie said sliding her scrubs
Maevie just nodded in agreement, mirroring her footsteps like a light towards Iain Incoming with a patient.
âThis is Aisling Haharty, 38 years old. Accidental overdose of prescribed beta blockers. At least 240mg. No diagnosed heart condition. Theyâre prescribed for serve post covid anxiety. ECG shows slightly widening QRS and long QTs. right letâs get her across when weâre ready, pleaseâ Maevie followed along to every word Iain spoke, memorising every element she could.
Maevie assisted grabbing the fabric and pulling the patient to the bed.
âRight, sheâs had 250mls of activated charcoal for ingestion. 500mcq of atropine, with 250ml of normal saline blous for hypotension, to no effect. Bradycardic at 36, hypotensive at 95 systolic, stats 96 on air. GCS is 14.â
âCheers. Thanks, Iainâ Stevie thanked him getting to work as Maevie also lightly thanked him, he responded with a light tap on her shoulder before leaving.
âAisling, my name is Dr Nash, Iâm going to be looking after you today and Iâm fully vaccinated. So is Dr Mae over there. Sui, lets repeat the 12 leads, and letâs get a glucagon IV in. Do a 10mg bolusâ Maevie smiling at the lady to ensure she knew she was vaccinated as Stevie informed the patient.
âAnd letâs prep a high dose insulin euglycemic therapy, as well and well do bloods, FBCs, U&Es, LFTs. And do you mind checking her blood sugar for me?â Stevie finished asking the nurse as Maevie turned at the sudden watched feeling to find faith.
âMaevie sweetheartâ faith began, which cohered Maevie away from staffâs current mass list of orders
âDid she get cleared? Why is she ordering the whole menu?â Faith asked her concerned for Stevie, Maevie shrugged in response. Holding her hands up in a âdonât involve meâ way.
Faith slid past Maevie, her hand holding the younger girls back as she approached Stevie to include her in the approaching convo
âWell, you donât need to throw the kitchen sink at her. When sheâs stale, weâll transfer her to HDU.â Tried informing Stevie who was still adamant âyeah, no, I just want to make sure that- ââI know, I know and youâre brilliant, ok? But were on the verge of declaring a Major incident. We just need to keep them movingâ
She was concerned for her eldest sister; the current spiral was unlike her normal controlling manner.
Maevie truly wished she could take her sisters pain and add it to her own.
âI can call HDU for youâ Maevie piped up in hopes to help in some form before sliding away from the conversation
-
An hour or few later Maevie found herself checking on Aisling.
âAisling, how is the dizziness holding up?â Maevie targeted the patient
âYeah, yeah, its passing.â
âMhm okay, your heart rate is coming up. So thatâs a good sign. But they do want to keep you in overnight for observationsâ Maevie knew the patient wasnât going to enjoy the ending off that sentence
âIs that really necessary? I mean
âThey just want to do some tests. Keep an eye on you, see how things go. They are the experts hereâ Maevie felt great remorse for the women âI understand how nerve-racking and anxiety inducing this must feel for you. But the risks to you from covid, theyâre a lot smaller that the risks from the situation youâre actually in. Which could have been really, really seriousâ Steve approached her sister, catching the ends of Maevie sentence.
Maevie wasnât lying when she said she understood, because nobody understood the patient more than Maevie ever could.
âYou must think Iâm pathetic. You probably work in here throughout all of it, didnât you? My sister said I watch too much news. I know I canât stay at home forever, itâs just. Itâs just, I feel, I feel like Iâm brokenâ Maevie knew that feeling all too well, pushing the emotions to the pit of her stomach she glanced between both the patientsâ tearful eyes and her sistersâ glassy ones as Stevie spoke up for, he positions.
âLook. You know youâre doing all the right things. Youâre seeing your GPâ
âYeh, but itâs not helpingâ
âYeah, but go back, ok? Get them to try something else. Youâre not wasting their time. Thatâs what theyâre there for. Seriously, this just takes time. There no magic cure for any of this stuff, unfortunate. I wish there was.â
Maevie silently grabbed her sisterâs hand, interlinking them in a silent way to comfort her as she left the room
-
Stevie found later Maevie by the coffee counter, nursing her second cup off the hour.
âMels missingâ Stevie informed her
âWhat, I thought she was going to her sisters?â
âShe was meant to; nobody can get hold of herâ
Maevie just sighed in defeat, she wished things could go right for once.
âI think youâve had enough off those today, no moreâ Stevie motioned to the coffee cup in her hands
âNever enoughâ
âYou are cut off, you hear me? C U T O F F.â Stevie spelled out âanyways come on, there was another casualty on that scene today, all hands-on deck for when they arriveâ
Maevie followed her movement towards the ED, which was surrounded by people. Not an unusual scene for the department.
Busyness always set panic into Maevie, but now wasnât the time. She was afraid to mention her sisterâs current anxiety was rubbing off on her own, she didnât want the attain, much rather look out for Stevie. Who was hovering the situation before her like a ghost. Stevie did seem present yet there she was, everything was in a slow-motion form.
âStevie?â Maevie hands found staves elbow, trying to bring her back to reality.
âAre you okay?â
Dylan approached the pair âStevie, do you want to go back to cubical?â
Maevie just silent watched as her sister left, torn between following after her or giving her space.
Maevie opted to follow after her, itâs what Stevie would have done for her
She approached her sister but was caught by an incoming patient, glancing at Stevieâs crying form.
Teddy brought Maevie attention away âMaevie? Maevie. Kyle marsh, 24 years old male. Involved in an RTCâ
âRight get him over here, ill sort him and grab Stevieâ
âHe stole a car and hit some gas cylinders at about 20mph. Heâs got a laceration on the left side of his faceâ
âRight and C spine clear?â Maevie Questioned
âYeah, on the sceneâ
âRight letâs get him across please.
âCome on. Heâs been complaining of pain in his left shoulder query dislocation. obs normal, GCs 15.
âTeddy, may I ask why he has a police escortâ Maevie asked masking her nervousness
âUrm, he caused the explosion. Tried to do a runner with a bag of drugs. A big bag. Right, thanks. Going to get onâ
Maevie thanked teddy, zoning out towards Stevie. Concern spiking.
âDr Nash, shall I order an X ray?â Rida brought her back to reality
âRight. Er, yeah, yeah. Please. Thank you. Iâll go find Stevie and inform herâ
Maevie found Stevie, her tear-stained face was now dry.
âStevie?â
Stevie turned at her name before responding
âRight, yeh what do we have?
âAre you okay?â Maevie pondered ignoring her question
âIâm okay kid, donât worry.â But how could Maevie not.
âWould you asses him for me? Iâm just going toâ Stevie followed but Maevie just nodded, allowing her to clean herself up
âLetâs take a look at that head shall weâ
Maevie could sense something was off about this patient, call it intuition or maybe Maevie could sense her own fate.
Faith was assisting her as they checked over his results, but a glimmer caught Maevie eye.
âSir- âMaevie began but Stevie was already hot on her tail âheâs got a knifeâ
âWhat?â Faith said pulling Maevie back slightly as she was beside his bed
Stevie approached with a job âheâs got a knife! In saw itâ
âUh, what?â The man acted dumb
âGive it to meâ
âI havenât, I swearâ
âStevieâ faith began, her arm still holding Maevie
âWait no I saw something tooâ Maevie tried stating but faith eyed her like she was crazy, shaking her head motherly. nobody was going to listen.
âJust, just empty your damn pocket, ok? I saw it, I swearâ Maevie watched Stevie demand the man as faith pulled Maevie behind Stevie and backing the police away âjust give us a bit of spaceâ
Maevieâs head lulled around as Kyle spoke up âwhatâs the matter with her?â
âSir, can you just empty your pockets please?â Maevie asked him politely, holding the back off Stevieâs scrubs, scrunching them up
Stevie glanced quickly at her sister, but it was back on Kyle moments later
âYeh, fine, whatever. This, Yeh?â He stated, pulling out some chewing gum.
âThatâs just chewing gum. I can, you can have it if you want, its juicy fruitâ
Maevie stared at the man, she knew what she saw, and he knew too.
âDarling, why donât you take a wee breakâ faith tried pulling Stevie âIâm fineâ
Maevie stood still, because when the sirens sound, she hides under the floors.
Faith turned, noticing Maevie presence âsweetheart, why donât you go take a few minutes and come back?â Faith spoke calming to the young girl, shed known her nearly her whole life. Maevie was a part of faiths life more than an outsider would think.
-
Maevie found herself wondering the corridors when she found Charlie
âHey Evie, you okay kidâ he started, noticing her furrowed brows.
Maevie knew he was the one person she could say thing to in the hospital without judgment yet the only words that could follow were âI donât even knowâ because truly, she didnât. Stevie was the one who needed someone to talk to not her
âYou know, itâs normal to not know why you feel certain ways. There isnât always an explanation. Feelings, they can be complicated, sometimes they just show up and take up space. You arenât broken for not knowing, and you donât owe anyone clarityâ his words sat heavily on her chest, but the moment changed drastically.
Charlie bumped into a man, a box of supplies tumbling to the ground before him. Maevie instantly leant down, collecting the items before it hit her how many pills were boxed. Her eyes rose to the manâs face as Charlie spoke
âDid you take these from the pharmacy?â
It was Kyle.
âMind your business.â
âCharlie no- âbut Maevie was too late âit IS my business, hand it backâ
âThis is life and death, ok?â
âKyle. stop these are life and deathâ Maevie tried politely but Charlie was much mire stern âyes, your absolute right, its life and death. Some of these drugs aet very hard to get hold ofâ
A clattering off the boxes across the floor filled the hallway
Maevie heart rate was starting to speed up, something bad was going to happen, the end was near.
Kyle began towards the opposing door, kicking a tray holding the door away before pulling a sharp object. The knife both Stevie and Maevie herself has seen prior. But this time it was in Charlie and Maevie face.
âPick it up!â Kyle demanded
âKyle.â Maevie tied to calm the situation âWhatâ
âPick it up now.â Kyle was clearly agitated
âReallyâ Charlie said, Maevie held his scrub top from the back. A hobbit shed done way too often today.
âQuicklyâ
Maevie leant down and began doing so. It was life or death in her eyes. But Charlie pulled her up, pushing her behind him âIâm going to put these back where they belong. If thatâs alright with youâ
Kyle with a sudden might rammed into Charlie to grab the box, tumbling Maevie down
âDonât be stupid. Donât be, how can you be so- â
âCharlie!â Maevie tried to warn him, but the knife plunged into him
Jumping off the floor she ran into Kyle, an attempt to break him free from Charlie
âMaevie, noâ Charlie tried as he slid to the floor pained.
Kyle struck by Maevieâs push pulled the knife from Charlie and plunged it into her.
She gasped.it didnât hurt the way shed expected. The pressure was blunt, like she was being punched from the inside out. Her breath caught between her gasps. Hot fire consumed her soul, her lugs burning with a passion as sharp, broken gasps of air fed her body. Everything felt distant. Blurred. silent. Still. she felt the cold floor as her body gave out.
Maevie closed her eyes, like three clicks and she was home. Back 15 and on the rusted swing set with a 25-year-old Stevie, when all her worries were so small.
Also can we get a proper friendship bond between Dylan and Faith?
Like if we can just have Iain and Faith be happy together, Dylan and Stevie get together and BOOM couple besties â¤ď¸
Pfffft, the HART team boss absolutely has Iain's number, and I do like that he's finally being properly called out for his behaviour. He's a good guy, and being impulsive isn't automatically a bad thing, but he does need to give his head a wobble (and has done for...oooh, about twelve years now *wry chuckling*)
