I’m looking through the trending tag and everyone’s comments on Betty’s stripper pole moment and I have some thoughts.
Everyone is saying that the writers sexualized a 16 y/o with that dance how dare they. Yet, these are many of the same people who are begging for a sex scene with two sixteen year old kids. Ya’ll want Betty and Jughead banging each other silly. Praised the scene in season 1 where they were slamming each other up against a wall but yet somehow that’s OK because it’s a “pairing”. Where was this injustice when Veronica was dancing around in her underwear or sprawled out naked in front of a fire place? So, it’s OK for a character to be sexualized when it’s actually sex and when there is a male partner involved. But, if they want to represent a teenager making stupid decisions while figuring out her sexuality (newsflash that’s a thing teens do!) suddenly it’s gross and demeaning to the character. I’m sorry I have mad respect for Lili and I believe her when she says that this is her character discovering her sexuality, not her character being sexualized.
Let’s look at the scene, it acknowledged that this is a misogynistic ritual, but IT’S A GANG! It’d be unrealistic if the gang didn’t have such a dumb ritual. Also, let’s note that it was a woman in the scene who said that Betty had to do it, none of the men. When the scene with Betty ended did any of the men cheer? No they did not until FP broke the awkwardness. I see that as a sign that many of them felt wrong about it too. Or at least hopefully that was what the writers were trying to convey. I will say here that it does seem that to be one to many locker room scenes for the show. Many people seem to want better from this show and its writers. That they don’t want Jughead to have a problem with Betty stripping and push her partly away because of it. BUT THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE! How else are characters and people supposed to grow unless they make mistakes and realize their fuck ups. Additionally you can’t be calling out the stripper scene and yet still want Jughead to supportive of it.
I approve of the way the scene was handled. Betty was well covered, I’ve seen bathing suits skimpier than her lingerie set(like when she was dark Betty), she took a twirl around the pole no excessive moves there or unnecessary grinding. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SHE WANTED TO DO IT! There was no awkwardness from her in that moment she.enjoyed.it. Not saying that should be encouraged in a 16 y/o but that’s what happens with teenagers. No one finds their sexuality right away and it’s perfect and they’re happy. They got to go through some missteps BUT also this may not be a misstep for Betty. She may and is allowed to feel proud of what she did. She didn’t run off and put her clothes back on in shame because she didn’t need to feel ashamed.
There are many ways to find ones sexuality it doesn’t have to be with someone during sex. Let’s think a little bit outside the bughead box.
