(Everyone go follow Naya, she's the reason i'm on here). missflossy3 - Kate you are also one of my best friends and I seriously don't know what i'd do with out you. insecureimagination - Ashleigh you are stunning and you have such an awesome blog. themadkingreigns - Janelle A.K.A 'Jelly Janelle' You are one of the funniest people I know, you're humor be it your Facebook, tumblr or snapchat always makes my day.
livlovesstuff - Liv you are absolutely one of the most inviting people I have ever met, I have only met you once and you were so welcoming and friendly. And the dancing was so much fun! There are without a doubt more that I have missed and i'm sorry if I have. I seriously can't believe that any of you follow me. And so you all know whenever I see any of you going though a hard time I really do hope things get better, if I don't message you it's probably because I don't want to both you.
If any of you or any of my other mutuals want to add me anywhere else please just ask, i'm more than happy to have you.
There are 32,000 deaths by guns in the US each year compared to 60 in the UK…
Point One: The 32,000 number includes suicides and accidents. (That’s why the statistic says “deaths” instead of “murders”) Point Two: You are twice as likely to be a victim of a stabbing in the UK than you are a shooting in the US. (1 crime per 374 people versus .49 crimes per 374 people) Conclusion: British people shouldn’t try to lecture Americans about violent crime.
I am aware but the same goes for the UK, if 1/3 of those are sucidies they’re possibly preventable suicide that wouldn’t have occurred without the possession of a gun, there is a fear of jumping or cutting as we know how that feels and are statistically less likely to do it whereas most people do not know how it feels to be shot so there is a reduced fear in that scenario. Secondly, stabbing is considerably less likely to die from a stab wound so the deaths are still far less substantial than that of shooting. I know multiple people who have been stabbed and not one of them died and they were out of hospital within a day… a shot to the body will almost certainly kill you if not you will be in hospital for a fairly long time dealing with it and lastly I wasn’t lecturing, I was merely pointing out that the ability to have guns increases the number of gun deaths pretty substantially
Note: iamchimp appears to have deleted the thread. Here's the reply I was working on anyway.
1. Actually, suicides account for more than 19,000 of those 30,000, so it's actually closer to 2/3rds. Those 19,000 deaths made up roughly half of the total number of suicides in the US. If we assumed that every single one of those gun-based suicides would not have happened if guns were banned, then we'd only get to the suicide rate of England + Wales (1 in 16000, versus 1 in 8000). 2. Notice that I didn't mention death in my statistics. Unfortunately, we can't simply compare murders to murders, because the US and UK use drastically different methods of counting them:
[Americans] count and report crimes based on initial data. The Brits count and report crimes based on the outcome of the investigation and trial. [...] Since 1967, homicide figures for England and Wales have been adjusted to exclude any cases which do not result in conviction.
So while the headline murder rate in the UK is about 15% of the US's, that's because the US counts any "death of interest to the police", regardless of whether or not anyone is ever punished for the crime. Even worse, coroners in the UK have stopped even reporting the number of violent deaths, and have started using "narrative" results, which do not lend themselves to statistical analysis. Such narrative inquests are over 15% of the total number of inquests by coroners, or roughly 4500 in 2011. Using a population number of 56 million, that's 1 per 12444 people. In the US, the murder rate in 2011 was 1 in 24478, or half what the UK numbers imply.
3. No, most shootings in the US do not result in death, despite what Hollywood would like you to believe. Looking merely at the FBI crime statistics (which does not include suicide attempts or accidents), there were 136,371 aggravated assaults involving firearms in 2011, and only 8,583 murders with firearms. 4. "Death" is only one of the bad outcomes of violent crime. It's pretty faint hope to say to someone who is disfigured or disabled for life because they were slashed with a knife or had a pint glass smashed in their face that "at least they weren't shot!" 5. British people shouldn't lecture Americans on violent crime. Also, please stop shipping your criminals like Piers Morgan and Russel Brand over here, thank you very much.
