The Emergence of Plant-Based Plastics
The days of single-use plastics will soon be over thanks to the Indonesian company Avani Eco. In various parts of the United States bans and severe limitations have been placed on the use of single-use plastics such as straws and plastic bags. In 2014 Avani Eco developed a plant-based plastic that is biodegradable and has since then been replacing single-use plastics. The difference between Avani Eco’s plant-based plastics in comparison to others is that it is biodegradable. Not all plant-based plastics are biodegradable.
Bags made out of the Avani Eco plastic are so eco-friendly that you can actually eat it. The bags are made out of cassava, which is a vegetable root found in the diets of many in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The composition of these bags is so compostable and biodegradable that they dissolve in water. Therefore if an animal were to try to eat the bag it would not be harmed.
The company boasts on its website that it has replaced 3.047 tons of unsustainable products and aims to increase that number. Many big-name companies such as Marriott, Heineken, Barney’s New York, and more, are clients of Avani Eco. The bags produced have a stamp-like logo on them saying “ I AM NOT PLASTIC” which is needed since the bags look and feel exactly like a normal plastic bag.
When most individuals are tasked with finding out more information about emerging technologies the first things that come to mind are AI, Drones, and Cloud Computing. Upon further research, I came across a whole realm of technologies that have the power to change the environment for the better. It’s so important to stay up to date on emerging technologies of this sort, I will be sure to follow the Avani Eco brand to learn more about the latest environment-saving technologies they have underway.
