Ian “The Future” Machado Garry (2025)
I’ve been away from MMA this week but Prates-Garry is a genuinely good Fight Night main event. Fight could be ass if Garry gets his way but it would be the “right” type of boring. The kind in a fight that matters.

Ian Machado Garry (16-1) is back in title contention. After suffering his first loss to Shavkat Rakhmanov in December, IMG got back in the win column when he managed to pick apart Carlos Prates for like 3.5 rounds. He was then made to survive hell in the 5th round as Prates managed to hurt him so badly, Garry had to resort to crawling away from him in a daze to survive. But survive he did, proving his toughness.
Now Garry has a win behind him, a new champion in front of him, and a former champion on the docket. A win over the ladder could be enough to launch him to the status of #1 contender.
Garry will face former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad (24-4) in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Tsarukyan vs Hooker.
I know people are expecting Shavkat Rakhmonov to run through Ian Garry, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he spends a lot of the fight making Rakhmonov look pedestrian. Even in a loss. This is going to be a fight where Shavkat will have to find a way to get himself into clinching range. He’s not a great range striker. He’s extremely easy to hit. His entire defensive game is the tall man lean back, something that can be exploited by Garry’s range. Garry will fight to stay at range with his entire being.
Not saying he’s going to be able to do it for an entire fight, but until Shavkat can find that range I expect some combo of Garry looking good/Rakhmonov looking ineffective.

Bad fight! A fight that tanks both guys' hype. The UFC audience gets exposed to the limits of MVP's grappling and his insanely low output and we see that IMG can be shut out of huge sections of the fight.
The Neal fight really exposed this to me but good lord does Garry not like fast fighters. Just completely 'nopes' his way out of striking exchanges. Didn't help that MVP was bigger than him. Even his grappling wasn't super impressive. Got the back in the first round and third but didn't really have an answer for the position. Hell, when he went for the leg and let MVP secure top position for a long time, he was placing figure four guard. Only reason he got up was because MVP got up. MVP could have chose to sat in guard for another minute and secured the fight. Instead, Garry finds a path to the back and ends the fight with standing back control. Didn't go for a leg to try to off balance MVP. Just sat there for 80 seconds. I feel like the more and more we see Garry not get these super favorable match-ups, the less interesting he will become.
Losing Hooft was also a big blow because you can see Garry's striking regressing. Like this should have been a jab and lowkick fight with some more head kicks mixed in to slow down the lead right hand of MVP. Instead, he just completely shut down after round 1.
This has real “this fight fucking sucks” potential and I’m here for it.
