I’ll Be Your Safety: Twenty-Two.
“Veronica have you seen my maroon jumper.” Louis called from his bedroom.
“I’m keeping it hostage because you aren’t leaving.” Ronnie said from the kitchen.
“I’m not sure my girlfriend would approve of that.” He said with a slight laugh.
“Elliott already said I could.” She said eating a couple grapes.
“Oh Ronnie, I’m gonna miss you.” Zayn said with a smile checking his phone.
“Why? You aren’t going anywhere.” She said with a smile.
“Are you really trying to guilt trip us right now Ronnie?” Liam asked laughing.
“Maybe.” She said grabbing her water and walking to the living room.
“Hate to break it to ya but your plan isn’t working.” Zayn teased.
“We’ll see about that. El, Becks, and Clara Jane fully support my plan.” Ronnie smiled.
“Boys, are you all packed?” Dean asked walking in the room.
“Everyone but Lou and Harry.” Liam said before turning to Ronnie. “I wonder why.”
She shrugged playfully, “No idea.”
It was three in the morning and Veronica Michaels was trying her best to not show how upset she really was. It was harder than it looked. The boys were leaving for the airport in an hour. Due to the fact that she looked like she got brutally beat up, Ronnie wasn’t going to make the trip to the airport with the other girls to send the boys off. She didn’t think it’d be a good idea. Since she wasn’t going, the young woman had to say her goodbyes before they left the complex. She was absolutely dreading it.
“Veronica.” Harry called from his room. “Have you seen the red sweater you borrowed?”
Liam, Niall, Dean, and Zayn just stared at the young woman causing her to blush.
“Louis, the jumper is in the cabinet in the bathroom. Harry, I have no idea.” Ronnie blurted out.
“I knew you’d crack Michaels.” Dean said with a smirk making the boys laugh.
“Found it!” Louis shouted before lugging his bags into the living room.
“See it was just a bit of fun.” Ronnie shrugged shyly.
“Veronica,” Harry’s husky voice called from his room. “Can you help me find it?”
The young woman sighed before setting down her water and walking out of the room.
“He’s going to miss having you around.” Louis smiled. “I can already tell.”
“Stop, Tommo, I’m already trying to keep myself from crying.” She said looking at him.
The tanned blue-eyed boy just leaned over and kissed her forehead, “So are we babe.”
Ronnie sighed once more before heading down the hall. When she reached the doorway,
she found a very frustrated curly haired boy sitting on his bed with his head in his hands.
“If you start crying Styles, I’m walking out right now.” She warned.
His head shot up at the sound of her voice. He faked a smile before sitting up. Ronnie made her way over to his bed. She stood quietly in front of him. The young boy placed his hands on her hips and pulled her closer to his body.
“I’ve got a whole plan worked out.” He said softly looking her in the eyes. That’s when she noticed it. They weren’t their usual color. They were dull and glassy.
“And what’s that Mr. Styles?” She said moving a piece of hair off his forehead.
“I’m smuggling you onto the plane with me.” He said sweetly.
“And how’s that gonna work?” Ronnie asked placing a hand on his shoulder.
“It’ll be easy. I distract them with my good looks and then bam you’re on.” He smiled.
Ronnie just laughed before smiling, “I don’t think that’s going to work.”
“You got any better ideas?” He said with a sigh looking at her.
“Yes, I kidnap you for two whole weeks and we’ll go on a vacation.” She smiled.
“And where would we go?” Harry asked softly.
“Somewhere tropical where no one would find us.” Ronnie said leaning into him.
“Two weeks of the beach and you in a bikini? Sign me up.” He smirked cheekily.
Ronnie leaned in and rested her bruised forehead on his, “I knew you’d love it.”
Harry’s smile grew before he placed a few sweet kisses on her lips.
“This is the worst part of the job.” He whispered softly. “Saying goodbye.”
“Then don’t say it yet.” She said softly. “And don’t go crying over some girl.”
He sighed softly knowing that she could read through the façade he was putting up.
“You’re not just some girl Ronnie.” Harry said. “You’re my best friend.”
Ronnie smiled happily, “You’re my best friend too Haz.”
The young boy sighed before letting go of her waist, “Well I guess we better get going.”
“Right.” She said quietly. “What were we looking for?”
“That red sweater you borrowed after you fell in that pond the other day.” He said.
“I like how you slid that in there, Styles.” She said rolling her eyes heading to the closet.
After a few minutes of shuffling through clothes in his closet, she found the sweater.
“It was like right under your nose Styles.” Ronnie said chucking it at him.
“Oh right.” He said with a suspicious grin. “Thanks Ron.”
“Wait did you—“ She asked looking at him.
“A magician mustn’t give away his secrets.” Harry wink.
“You two make me sick.” Louis said appearing at the door. “We have to go now.”
Ronnie sighed before following the two boys out of the flat to join the others. She watched as luggage was carried down to the car. This was it. They were really leaving her. She mustered up some courage and said goodbye to some of the best people she knew.
“Well Mr. Payne, I guess this is goodbye.” Ronnie said making her way towards Liam.
The strong boy pulled her into a tight bear hug before kissing her head.
“Don’t go running without me, got Ron?” He whispered softly into her ear.
“I promise I will wait til you get back.” She said quietly. “I’m gonna miss you.”
“I’m gonna miss you too.” Liam said with a sigh before letting her go.
She moved to the boy to her left. He immediately pulled her into a tight hug. She sighed taking in the faint smell of cigarettes.
“If you need anyone to talk to, remember I’m just a phone call away Ron.” Zayn said.
“Same goes for you, Mr. I’m Dating Clara Jane Now.” She teased him playfully.
The young man stuck out his tongue before telling her goodbye.
“Veronica, I’m not saying goodbye to you.” Louis said softly as his voice cracked.
“Tommo, you aren’t allowed to cry.” Ronnie said walking to him. “If you cry, I cry.”
He tried his best to hide the fact that he had tears in his eyes as he pulled her into a hug.
“Promise me you’ll talk to me every day?” He whispered gently in her ear.
“Promise.” She said burying her head into his chest.
“Promise me you’ll look after my girlfriend for me?” He said as his voice cracked again.
“We will be inseparable.” Ronnie said looking up at him with a smile.
“Are you going to be okay by yourself? I can get Schmel to come stay with you.” He offered.
“That’s sweet of you but I’ll be fine.” She replied. “Don’t worry about me.”
“I’m gonna miss you.” He said with a sigh. “Like a lot.”
“Cheer up Tommo. I still have about two hours to devise a plan in which I sneak into the airport and hide in your luggage as a stowaway.” She said with a smile.
Louis shook his head before letting out a soft laugh.
“There he is, there’s my goofy best friend.” She smiled before kissing his forehead.
“Goodbye Veronica.” Louis said with a smile. “I’ll keep Lover Boy safe for ya.”
“Goodbye Lou.” She said squeezing him tight. Next up was a sad looking Harry Styles. Tears were starting to form in the teenage boy’s eyes as he looked down at her.
“Oh no you don’t.” Ronnie said wanting to cry just looking at him. “Don’t you dare.”
He took a deep breath trying to compose himself but felt himself breaking down again. Ronnie didn’t say a word. She just wrapped her small arms around his waist before holding him close. It wasn’t soon before long that the young man’s lanky arms were wrapped around her protectively. His hug was a little tighter than the other boys.
“It’s just two weeks Haz. We can do it.” She whispered. “I know we can.”
“I know but I just going to be so bored without you.” Harry said.
“Eh, I’m sure you’ll find something to do.” Ronnie teased.
“I’m going to miss you Ron.” He said with a sigh kissing her forehead.
“Me too H.” She said as tears started to come.
“Remember what we talked about?” Harry said looking into her eyes lovingly.
“Yes, I do. I’m not going to my night class while you are gone. I got it.” She said.
“Okay good.” He said before squeezing her once more. “Goodbye Veronica.”
“Goodbye Harry.” She said kissing his cheek. “You are going to be just fine.”
A shy smile formed on the young man’s lips as he stepped away from her.
The young woman looked up to find the last member of One Direction waiting for her. She walked over to Niall as her eyes flooded with tears. He looked up at her slowly.
“No, no, no, no.” He said backing away with his hands up. “You can’t get on Harry for wanting to cry and then come over to me about to bawl your eyes out.”
“Oh shut up Horan.” She said covering her eyes hoping no tears would slip out.
Niall just smiled before pulling her into a hug. She buried her head into his chest as his grip got a little tighter. Ronnie didn’t want to let go of him because she knew if she did she would be an absolute wreck. The young couple was always together. And when they weren’t together, they were always in contact.
There was something about Niall that made her feel safe—something that calmed her down. He had the capability of making her forget absolutely everything. She didn’t feel the need to dress up or act differently around him. She could just be herself and that meant the world to her. The best part was that they didn’t even need to be doing anything as long as she was near him she was happy.
“Why’re you crying?” His Irish accent whispered in her ear.
“I won’t get to see your Irish pain in the ass for two weeks.” She said through tears.
“Shouldn’t that be a good thing?” Niall said laughing softly.
Ronnie pulled her head away from his chest before looking in his deep blue eyes. She shot him a fake glare making him smile. He just leaned in and kissed her forehead before squeezing her tighter. He knew exactly what she meant. They were always together. If she wasn’t at his place, he was at hers. He was there when she got home from school, when she woke up on the weekends, and sometimes even in the middle of the night just because. There was just something about Ronnie that he couldn’t get enough of. He had to be around her at all times. She just made him a better person and he honestly didn’t know what he was going to do for two weeks without her.
“Do you really think I could go two weeks without talking to you?” He said softly.
“But you’re going to be busy working.” She said.
Niall sighed before wiping a few tears from her face, “I’ll always make time for you.”
Her cheeks grew warm as she started to subconsciously play with the string of his hoodie.
“Are you going to be okay by yourself?” He asked moving a piece of hair out of her face.
“I guess I’m gonna have to be.” She said softly focusing on his jacket.
He just sighed before kissing her forehead again. He really didn’t want to leave her.
“Who am I going to eat with Ni?” Ronnie asked breaking the silence.
“Blanche said you can go eat with them whenever you want.” Niall said sweetly.
“You talked to them for me?” She asked fighting back a smile.
He just nodded happily.
“Oh and I asked Frank to keep an eye on you so you’re welcome.” Niall smirked.
“Thanks.” She said rolling her eyes. “I’m going to be late every day. He talks for hours.”
Niall started laughing making her smile.
“Ronnie?” He said shyly looking into her eyes.
“Yeah?” She said with a smile. His eyes studied her face.
“I—uh—I-I—um.” The young boy stuttered getting distracted by her lips.
“You what?” Ronnie whispered causing his cheeks to blush.
The tall Irish boy cleared his throat looking from her eyes to her lips. As if overwhelmed by some sort of magnetic force, her lips ended dangerously close to his. She took a deep breath as he made his move. Just as their anxious lips were about to make contact, Liam called his name telling him that they needed to get going or they’d be late.
“Fucking hell.” He mumbled before letting out a frustrated sigh. Ronnie couldn’t help but smile as she caught his eye—his cheeks turned bright pink.
The young boy cleared his throat before placing a fake smile on his face, “Well Ron—.”
“I’m gonna miss you Ni.” She whispered before burying her head in his chest.
“I’m gonna miss you too Ronnie.” He said with a sigh squeezing her tight.
“Be careful and have fun.” The tiny girl mumbled into his chest.
“I will.” Niall said with a smile. “Remember, my phone’s always on.”
“Enjoy your time at home.” She whispered in his ear. “Tell your mom I say hi.”
Niall kissed the side of her head, “Will do. Bye babe.”
“Bye.” The tiny girl said stepping away with tears in her eyes.
With tear filled eyes, Veronica Michaels watched as the boys piled into the car. She plastered a fake smile on her face before heading back to her place. Once inside, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and couldn’t help but smile.
One last time before we leave, don’t forget to lock your door Veronica. I don’t want any other serial killers to come and get you. xx
I’ll Be Your Safety: Twenty.
“Yeah but Louis, he’s been acting weird since last Saturday.” She said frustrated.
“Well have you talked to him about it?” Louis asked staring at the ceiling.
“I’ve tried to but he won’t talk to me.” She said from the bathroom.
“He won’t talk to me about it either.” The young man said with a sigh.
“Really? It must be serious then.” She said softly looking at herself in the mirror.
“Whatever it is, I’m just going to forget about it for tonight. You want to know why, Veronica?” Louis said with a smirk. “Because I’m going to get wasted and so are you.”
Veronica Michaels popped her head out of the bathroom with a curling iron attached to a few strands of her hair. A tiny smirk formed on her face as she wiggled her eyebrows at her best friend. His infectious laugh filled the room as she stepped back into the bathroom. After finishing up her hair, she took one long look at herself in the mirror. It had been another long and stressful week and she wanted nothing more than to relax. Lucky for her, her best friends were five boys who enjoyed going out and getting drunk. And tonight, they were going to do just that. The boys and their crew were going to the opening of a new club in the city and insisted that Ronnie go with them.
“Okay Lou, how do I look?” She asked stepping into her room. She spun in a little circle showing off her outfit. It was a little tight and a little short. Her grandmother would call it an inappropriate attention-seeking outfit and Ronnie would have to agree but that’s what she was going for.
“Damn.” Louis said slowly checking her out causing her skin to grow warm. His eyes went wide as he realized what he had just said, “Please don’t tell her I just checked you out. I’d never hear the end of it.”
“Secrets safe with me Lou.” She said softly. “So I look okay?”
“Very fit. Can already think about of about ten chat-up lines to use on ya.” He said with a wink.
A cheeky smile formed on her lips as she grabbed her bag. “Ready to go?”
The young man stood up before following her out of her flat.
“We are all going to together tonight so no one has to drive home.” Louis said.
“Perfect.” She said with a smile as she locked up.
The pair headed down the stairs to find all of their friends already in the car. She felt bad that they were waiting on her. The rest of the boys were anxious to go. After Louis and Ronnie found their seats in the back, they were off. Loud dance music oozed from the speakers while a strong party vibe filled the air. She knew it was going to be a good night.
As they left the complex, she focused on the seat in front of her. Leaning their head against the window was a curly haired boy who had ignored her all week. When it was time to take her to class on Wednesday, he sent Louis instead. Sic of the silent treatment, Ronnie decided to take things into her own hands. He tapped his shoulder through the gap in the seat. He looked back at her and smiled softly. Without a second thought, he turned around. She leaned against the seat in front of her making her mouth even with his ear.
“I don’t know what’s going on with you Haz but I just want to apologize for last weekend.” She whispered softly causing him to freeze. “I was a bit rude.”
She watched as his hands nervously played with the material of his pants.
“I didn’t think I needed your permission to leave but I realize that I sort of disappeared and I’m sorry if I worried you.” She explained. “I just wanted to get Willow home.”
“And if I hurt your feelings by what I said, I’m sorry. I regret it. I really do.” She sighed. “But if it’s something you want to talk about, I’m here for you.”
Not expecting a response, the young woman sat back and enjoyed the rest of the ride. After fifteen minutes of absolute chaos, the car stopped in front of a packed looking club.
“Alright, everyone we are going to be getting out in five minutes. Guys, protect the girls because we can’t protect all of you. Girls in the middle, guys on the outside.” Steve, their bodyguard said from the front seat. “Liam, Dave has Becca and Clara with him.”
“Perfect.” Liam said. “Are they waiting for us inside?”
“Yeah, they just got let in a few minutes ago.” Steve said before stopping the car.
“Alright, pile out soldiers.” Louis shouted from the back making everyone laugh.
Flashing lights and shouts could be heard as the small group piled out of the car. The boys stood together for photographs while the two females hid behind them. Ronnie readjusted her clothes while Elliott focused on her phone.
Her eyes quickly met with Harry’s as he slowly checked her out, “Holy shit.”
“What?” She blushed looking down at her clothes.
“Veronica I—you—wow.” He said completely tongue-tied.
Ronnie’s cheeks grew warmer as she mumbled a thank you.
“Becs is waiting for us at the door. Steve said we can go while they take photos.” Elliott said wrapping her hand around Ronnie’s arm.
“See you in there.” Harry winked before turning around.
Walking hand in hand, Ronnie and Elliott headed inside. Greetings were shared between the group of women before being ushered into the boys VIP section by Dave. Elliott sat down on the couch ready to pour herself a glass of champagne. Ronnie was ready to join her when she felt someone place a hand on her lower back.
She turned around to find a nervous looking Harry Styles. “Hey.”
He stepped in close before clearing his throat.
“I’m sorry for being hot and cold for the past week. I’m just going through something and don’t know how to handle it fully. I know you and Lou want to help but I think it’s something I have to do on my own but please just know if I’ve upset you, it wasn’t on purpose.” He whispered in her ear. “And I’m really, really sorry.”
Ronnie just smiled, “Don’t worry about.”
“Are you sure?” The young boy asked with concern in his eyes.
Ronnie nodded slowly with a smile.
“Good.” He said placing a quick kiss on her forehead.
She could feel her face warm up. She shook her head before attempting to walk away.
“You look very nice tonight.” He whispered in her ear. “Like very, very, very nice.”
Ronnie just rolled her eyes causing him to laugh softly. He slipped an arm around her shoulder before walking over to his friends who had already ordered a round of drinks for everyone. Louis called his name causing him to let go of her to see what was up. Drinks were passed around happily. She stood quietly. Out of nowhere, a very good looking Irish boy appeared by her side.
“How does it feel to be somewhat tall tonight?” Niall asked with a smile on his face.
“Well I have to say I’m a fan. I can almost see eye to eye with you.” Ronnie smiled before looking at the glass in her hand. “Thanks for this.”
Niall quickly down his before looking at her, “Are you gonna drink it or just look at it?”
“Are you Irish folk always this feisty with your liquor?” She teased playfully.
“If you’re partying with the Irish, you gotta keep up.” He said with a wink.
The young woman downed her shot before getting handed two more. The rest of the boys appeared with various alcoholic drinks in their hands. Conversations began as she threw back the rest of her shots. Niall smiled happily before handing her one more.
“If you can keep up with this guy you’ll be a legend, Ron.” Louis said nodding at Niall.
“If I end up throwing up because of you guys, you’re dead.” Ronnie said.
“We get it. You hate puke.” Harry said mocking her.
She shoved him playfully making the others laugh.
Three hours later, the drinks were still coming left and right. Clara Jane and Zayn ended up making out in a corner while Liam and Becca sat together in their booth. The other three members of One Direction were nowhere to be found. Veronica was in the middle of the crowd dancing with Elliott. She could feel the alcohol surging through her veins.
At the end of a very remixed Usher song, she lost sight of Louis’ girlfriend. The DJ came on to hype up the already crazy crowd. The drunken blonde turned around to leave the crowd to find her friends when someone latched onto her wrist. She turned around to find a very attractive curly haired boy with a drink in his hand. A small smile formed as she stepped closer to him. Without hesitation, he chugged his drink. A group of drunken girls fell over causing the young woman to stumble into his body. He placed his hands on her waist protectively before pulling her out of danger.
“You alright there Veronica?” He asked with a smug look on his face.
“I could be better.” She said. He gazed deeply into her eyes before staring at her lips. She could smell the liquor on his breath. As a new song began, Harry leaned in and kissed her. His grip around her waist grew tighter as he pulled her in close.
“How bout now?” He whispered as he pulled away.
“Ehh.” Ronnie said with a playful shrug.
He let out a frustrated sigh making her laugh. She placed a hand on his chest before resting her lips on top of his. He smiled gently before deepening the kiss. He pulled away before things heated up.
“Will you dance with me, Ron?” He whispered softly before pecking her lips.
She nodded slowly before starting to dance to the beat. He quickly closed the space between them. His hands found her hips as things started to get intimate.
It wasn’t long before something hard rubbed against her. Her eyes went wide as she realized what it was. Ronnie turned around to face him. His eyes were two shades darker. His cheeks were a slight shade of pink. He cleared his throat embarrassed. She leaned in and placed a very light kiss on his lips. Hungry for more, Harry leaned into her before catching his lips with his own. His tongue slid into her mouth as her hand trailed down his torso. When her fingers traced the waistband of his pants, he realized he was in trouble.
“You-Y-You’re amazing Veronica.” He said stumbling through his words.
“But—“ She said looking up at him biting her lip.
“We have to wait until we are back at home to um do that.” He said innocently.
“You’re the one jumping the gun here.” She said with a playful smirk.
Harry shook his head. “You’ll pay for that, love.”
A drunken smile formed on Ronnie’s face as he slipped his hand into hers.
“I think we need a break from the dancefloor, Veronica.” He said with a smile.
“Lead the way Styles.” Ronnie said as the young boy led her through the crowd.
If there was one good thing that came out of living in house full of men, it was the fact that Veronica Michaels could hold her alcohol with the best of them. It was nearly one in the morning and the young American was still going strong. A colorful mixed drink occupied her hand as she tried her best not to laugh at Louis and Elliott’s dance-off. Just as the DJ took a small break, Niall took up a spot beside her.
“How ya holdin up Michaels?” He asked leaning in real close. He smelt like he was enjoying himself.
“I’m just peachy.” She said with a smile. “What about you?”
“I’m better now.” Niall said as his smile grew a little bit making her blush. The introduction to “I’m A Slave 4 U” came on causing every girl in the club to go crazy. The young man stepped in a little closer placing a hand on her lower back softly. “Ron.”
“Hmm.” She mumbled turning into him so she could hear him better.
“You look beautiful tonight.” His Irish accent whispered in her ear.
Her skin grew warm as she looked at the young man. She was met with a shy smile.
The young couple was soon interrupted by the dancing duo. A small dance party began as the four young adults made complete fools of themselves. Halfway through the song, Louis stopped dancing and watched his two friends interact with each other.
Something was happening between Ronnie and Niall. He couldn’t place it but he knew it was there. A smirk formed on his face as he casually took his girlfriend away leaving the two blondes alone..
Ronnie couldn’t help but laugh as Niall started dancing like a complete goof ball. The song quickly ended before another dance worthy Spears song began.
“Is it like Britney Spears hour or what?” She said shaking her head.
“I happen to love this song.” He said with a happy smile.
“Really?” Ronnie said trying to hide the fact that she wanted to laugh.
He nodded slowly with a smirk before drunkenly serenading her, “So come here, little closer, wanna whisper in your ear, make it clear, little question.”
Ronnie just shook head before dancing playfully with him as he continued to sing.
“If I said my heart was beating loud, if we could escape the crowd somehow, if I said I want your body now, would you hold it against me?” Niall sang with a playful smirk.
She just started laughing as he started to do some absolutely ridiculous dance moves. The breakdown between the chorus and the next verse began as the young couple moved closer to one another. His hands guided her hips to the beat as she felt a smile form. She closed the space between them allowing their warm bodies to move to the beat in sync.
“Hey you might think that I’m crazy but you know I’m just your type.” She whispered in his ear.
His skin grew warm as her words surrounded him. He tried to fight back his feelings. She stepped back and looked him in the eyes. They were a darker shade of blue than normal.
Ronnie stepped back in and whispered in his ear, “You just cannot deny, there’s a spark in between us when we’re dancing on the floor.”
The chorus began once again as the duo continued playing their game of mind tricks.
When she stopped singing, Niall stepped in real close placing his mouth close to her ear. The warmth of his body radiated on her as his hands held her close. She felt protected.
“If I said I want your body, would you hold it against me?” Niall whispered seductively.
Her face grew warm, as she looked him in the eyes. There was something she had never seen before—something new and exciting, something different from every other guy she had ever been with, something that made her want to keep looking. She shook her head trying to clear the thoughts slowly taking over her brain. Without saying a word, the young woman turned around placing her back against his chest as the big beat breakdown of the song slowly began. Almost as if on cue, his hands found the front of her legs as she slowly grinded against him. The music thudded through her chest as his breath tickled her neck. Everything seemed to go blurry as she focused on one thing and one thing only: dancing with Niall.
Nothing else seemed to matter.
As the song came to an end, she could feel something start to harden behind her. The tiny blonde turned around to tease him about it but failed to do so. He placed his hands on her waist before pulling her body closer to his. She placed her hands gently on his stomach while his wandered down and rested on her butt. His deep blue eyes took in her features lovingly. She could feel a blush form on her face. He glanced down at her lips and she could immediately feel them tingle. He rested his forehead on hers as a smile started to form. She took a deep breath ready for whatever was going to happen. He inched his lips closer to hers. Just as they were about to make contact, a strong hand was placed on the young man’s shoulder causing them to freeze.
Niall turned around nervously to find Steve standing with a smile on his face. He leaned in before whispering something in the young pop star’s ear. Ronnie watched as Niall’s body language changed. The blue-eyed boy turned around and looked at the small girl.
Disappointment covered his face as he tried to put on a fake smile. “We have to go.”
“Oh okay.” Ronnie said shyly as he let go of her.
Niall placed his hands on her hips before guiding her through the crowd following Steve’s lead. As soon as they reached the front door, they were ushered into their car. The small girl climbed in the back beside Elliott and Louis. Niall sat in front of her. The car left the parking lot as a drunken rendition of some JLS song began.
“Here you are love.” Louis said with a huge smiling handing over her jacket and purse.
“Thanks.” She said quietly before leaning her head against the window.
“Are you okay Ron?” Elliott asked trying her hardest to whispered.
“Yeah.” She said with a fake smile catching Louis’ eye. He knew she was lying.
The tanned blue-eyed boy looked from her over to his Irish band mate. His body was hunched and his head was leaning against the window as well. His eyes wandered back to his best friend and knew something had gone down between them.
“Veronica.” Louis slurred quietly leaning forward so only she’d hear. “What happened?”
“Nothing.” She said with a sigh. “Absolutely nothing.”
I’ll Be Your Safety: Nineteen.
She sat in front of a partially painted canvas as the sweet voice of Ed Sheeran filled the room. It was mid morning and the Saturday sun was shining brightly through her windows. She started to hum softly before mixing a new shade of green. She loved days like this. She could sit around enjoying the weather and herself. It was just what she needed after a stressful week. Her mind started to drift off to the night before. Everything about it was just right. After all the kids left, Ronnie and Harry just sat around and talked until the wee hours of the morning. There was no rush, no direction, and no worries.
Her hair was a disaster, her clothes were covered in paint, and Veronica Michaels could care less. She started to hum the words to a song about a couch when a knock came to her door. She called out that it was open and before she knew it a very tanned blue eyed boy and a very excited blonde haired girl were standing in front of her holding hands.
“Hey Lou.” Ronnie said before turning to the girl. “And I’m guessing you are Elliott.”
“Lou, you didn’t tell me she was gorgeous.” The blonde said smacking Louis’ arm.
“Harry did.” Louis said with a grin. “Hi Ron. This is my rude girlfriend, Elliott.”
Ronnie stood up before heading to the kitchen to clean up her paint covered hands.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you.” Ronnie said sticking out her hand.
“Oh the pleasure is all mine.” Elliott said pulled her into a hug. “I’m a hugger, sorry.” A smile formed on Louis’ face as he watched the two girls hug briefly.
“I am not rude. He’s just—” Elliott started.
“Being Louis I gotcha.” Ronnie said laughing.
“Oh Veronica!” Louis said in a singsong voice.
“What?” She asked with a sigh.
“Harold got home a little late last night.” Louis smirked.
“That’s weird because we didn’t go out last night.” Ronnie said with a straight face deciding to mess with him. Elliott could read right through it.
“But wait he left and said he was going—” Louis mumbled. “Are you taking the piss Ron?”
“Clearly she is Lou.” Elliott rolled her eyes. “She’s got the same look about her that Harry has had all morning. It’s obvious they were together last night.”
“Nice choice Louis. I like her.” Ronnie said with a smile.
“Well if you didn’t go out, then what did you do Miss?” Louis said raising an eyebrow.
“We babysat Mrs. Mills girls and then the McDonnell’s son.” Ronnie said with a smile.
“Oh my god, you two make me sick.” Elliott said dramatically. Ronnie just laughed.
“Babe, we need to step up our game if we want to be as perfect as them.” Louis said kissing his girlfriend’s forehead.
“Oh shut up you two.” Ronnie said feigning disgust.
“Well did anything happen while babysitting?” Louis asked suggestively.
“Just ignore him love.” Elliott said shaking her head.
“Why?” Louis whined making Ronnie smile.
“Because that wasn’t even a good one.” She said looking at him.
“I thought it was pretty good.” He said quietly.
Elliott just patted his back before shaking her head. “It really wasn’t.”
Louis just sighed. Ronnie knew she was going to like Louis’ girlfriend.
“Babe, you should have made a joke about Harry falling for the babysitter.” Elliott said with a playful smirk on her face. “Since he’s the baby.”
“See this is why I’m in love with you.” Louis said placing a sloppy kiss on her lips.
Ronnie just smiled watching the young couple interact.
“Sorry Ron.” Louis said blushing realizing she was still there.
“It’s fine. You are hopelessly in love I get it.” Ronnie said dryly. “Now, would the lovebirds like something to eat or drink?”
“No thanks. Harry just made us breakfast.” Louis smiled.
“Oh and I did nothing?” Elliott said hitting him again.
“Fine Elliott helped too.” Louis said rolling his eyes.
“Hey I found out some classified information from Haz, which I’ll be sharing with Ronnie later and not you.” Elliott said sticking out her tongue.
“What did you find out?” Louis asked her suspiciously.
“If you knew how to cook, you would know.” Her girlfriend said with an attitude.
“Ronnie, feel free to kick her out at anytime.” Louis said crossing his arms over his chest.
“Ronnie, just ignore him.” Elliott said. “We came over for a reason.”
“Oh right.” Louis said clearing his head. A big smile formed as he looked at his best friend happily, “The lads and I have a show tonight in the city and you are coming.”
“I’m going and Becca, Liam’s girlfriend, will be there too.” Elliott added.
“Well that should be fun.” Ronnie said with a smile. “I have no choice right?”
“Nope.” Elliott said with a smirk as another knock came to the door.
“It’s open.” Louis shouted. “Come in.”
“Babe this isn’t your home.” Elliott said tapping his arm.
Louis opened his mouth to speak but stopped as the door opened.
Harry and Zayn walked inside with big smiles on their faces.
“See it was just them.” Louis said quietly.
“Well what if it was a serial killer?” Elliott said with a serious look on her face.
“Just because I showed up later than the others doesn’t mean you can make jokes about me.” An Irish voice said from the doorway catching everyone’s attention.
Ronnie started laughing at Niall’s comment. The rest of her friends looked at her like she was crazy. She glanced over at Niall who was smiling happily at their private joke. The blonde Irish boy walked over and pulled her into a tight hug before heading straight for the kitchen. Zayn walked over to her next.
“What ya workin’ on, Ron?” Zayn asked.
“Background for a new piece.” Ronnie said as he stood back to admire it.
“Looks great so far.” Zayn said before taking a seat on her couch.
She turned to Elliott. “What time do I have to be ready by?”
“We are leaving at 12:45.” Elliott said with a smile.
Ronnie looked over at the clock in the kitchen. She had exactly two hours to get ready.
“Are you wearing that?” Ronnie nodded towards Elliott’s outfit. It was simple but cute.
Elliott nodded. “It’s kind of low-key. Think like indie coffee-shop performance.”
The American nodded trying to visualize what she had in her closet.
“Ron?” Niall called from the kitchen.
“What Nialler?” She asked turning around to look at him.
“Do you have—“ He started to say but she read his mind.
“In the cupboard above the silverware drawer.” She replied quickly.
“What about—“ Niall started again before heading towards the cupboard.
“Second shelf of the fridge behind the bowl of grapes.” Ronnie said with a smile.
“Great, do you have—“ Niall said with his face in the fridge.
“Middle drawer of the fridge.” She said. “That’s if there is any left.”
An impressed look washed over Elliott’s features. She turned towards her boyfriend for some sort of explanation.
“They spend a lot of time together.” Louis whispered. Elliott just nodded slowly.
“Oh Ni, I got you—“ Ronnie started to say before the Irish boy cut her off.
“Veronica Michaels, I love you!” He shouted with his head in the refrigerator.
“Just clean up after yourself this time.” Ronnie sighed.
Niall’s infectious laugh could be heard making her smile.
Ronnie looked around to find everyone watching her, “What?”
“Nothing.” Elliott said with a smug look on his face.
“Okay let’s leave Ron alone so she can get ready.” Louis said plopping down on the couch..
“Don’t make a mess, don’t break anything, and don’t touch my painting.” She rattled off.
“I’ll keep ‘em in line Veronica.” Harry said with a smile from the armchair in the corner.
Her cheeks grew warm as she sent an appreciative smile his way.
Forty-five minutes passed before Veronica Michaels was officially ready to leave. As she left her bathroom, her eyes were drawn to her bed. Sitting contently in a pair of black jeans, a pink polo shirt, and a dark jean jacket was a very happy looking four-year-old girl. Her brown hair was in a high ponytail as a pair of pink Converse covered her feet.
“Well hello Miss Willow, what brings you back here?” Ronnie asked smiling.
“Beronica, come here. I need to tell you something.” Willow said sweetly patting the bed.
The young woman walked over quietly before taking a seat beside the young girl.
“Beronica, Hawee asked me if I wanted to see One Diwection play music.” Willow said softly.
Ronnie tried her best to fight back a smile, “He did?”
“Mummy said yes! So I get to go with you.” Willow squealed. “I’m so happy.”
“That is great.” Ronnie said. “We are going to have so much fun.”
Willow slid off the queen-size bed. “Let’s go see Hawee. He misses you.”
“How do you know that?” She asked suspiciously.
“Well I’m a pwincess so I know these things duh.” Willow said nonchalantly.
The young woman couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh Willow.”
“Wace you to Hawee.” Willow giggled before running out of the room.
A few moments passed before her bedroom door opened and in walked a very happy looking Willow Mills in the arms of a very smug looking Harry Styles. Ronnie just shook her head.
“Beronica, you didn’t even try.” Willow laughed.
“You’re just too fast for me WIlls.” Ronnie said with a dramatic sigh.
“She is the fastest princess I know.” Harry nodded confirming Ronnie’s statement.
“Mumma would be so happy.” Willow smiled proudly.
“Well ladies, I think it’s time we start heading out. Ready?” He said softly.
“Yeah. Hey, Miss Willow, do you need to use the restroom?” Ronnie asked quietly.
“I’ll try to.” The little girl said quietly. “Can you put me down Hawee?”
The young man did was told before watching her skip to the bathroom.
Ronnie reached over and placed a hand on his shoulder. “You okay, Haz?
“Ron I—“ Harry got choked up. He shut his eyes letting out a frustrated sigh.
“I know something is going on with you.” She said quietly.
“It’s just nerves.” He said with a sigh. “They get the best of me sometimes, sorry.”
She looked up and could see the fear in his eyes, “Why are you nervous?”
“Because.” He said shyly trying to avoid eye contact.
“Don’t be nervous Haz, you’ll be amazing.” She said pulling him into her.
The curly haired boy let to out a sigh before looking her in the eyes.
“Hey you’re Harry Styles.” Ronnie said with a smirk. “You can do anything.”
The tall boy leaned in and pressed a deep kiss on her lips making a small smile form.
“Harry…” She whispered softly.
“Okay, I’m weadee.” Willow said waltzing back into the room.
“Alright Miss Willow, let’s go.” Ronnie said stepping away from her friend.
The trio walked out of her room to find the rest of flat empty. She collected her things before following Harry and Willow outside. The others were waiting by their cars.
“I put her car seat in your car. El is gonna go with you guys.” Harry said.
“Okay great.” Ronnie said locking her flat.
“Well Princess Willow, I’ll see you when you get there.” Harry said kissing her head.
“Good luck Hawee.” Willow said shyly as she clung onto Ronnie’s hand.
The young boy leaned in and kissed the side of Ronnie’s head before heading downstairs.
It wasn’t too long after that the two girls headed down to her car finding Elliott waiting patiently.
A big smile formed on her lips as she noticed Willow’s cuteness.
“Well who do we have here?” Elliott asked squatting down to talk to the young girl.
“Willow, this is Elliott, Louis’ girlfriend.” Ronnie said sweetly.
“You date Louis?” Willow said as her eyes lit up making the older girls smile.
“Yes I do. It’s nice to meet you Willow.” Elliott said with a smile.
“Louis is so funny.” Willow said softly. “Kaylee likes him the best.”
“Ask her who her favorite is.” Ronnie whispered softly to Elliott.
“Who do you like best?” Elliott asked with a smile.
“Hawee.” Willow said as her cheeks turned a slight shade of pink.
“He must be a crowd favorite in this complex.” Elliott said with a smirk.
“Well look at the time—“ Ronnie said with a smile. “We should be heading out now.”
The drive to the venue was full of laughter and endless get-to-know-you conversation topics. Within the first five minutes, Ronnie knew that Elliott was going to be her first real girlfriend in London and that felt good. Having the boys was nice but having someone to have some girl talk with was something she was lacking. She didn’t have many girlfriends so knowing that Elliott could be that for her was something special.
When they got inside, a giant of a man met them at the entrance. Elliott knew him very well. Passes were handed out and the trio was ushered inside the building.
“Oh Becks is here.” Elliott said softly before getting up from the couch. Ronnie looked up to find a brown haired girl standing looking like the definition of perfection. “And next to her is Clara Jane, she’s the girl Zayn’s talking to.”
Ronnie nodded as the two women walked towards them.
“Elliott!” Her posh accent squealed.
“Hey Becca.” The bleached blonde said standing up to embrace her in a hug.
“You must be Ronnie.” Liam’s girlfriend said looking her up and down. The young woman stuck out her hand professionally while Ronnie shook it.
“That’s me. It’s so nice to finally meet you. I’ve heard great things.” Ronnie said.
“You have a kid?” Becca said eying Willow on her lap disapprovingly.
“Oh no, I’m her babysitter.” Ronnie said shyly. “Miss Willow say hi to Becca.”
“Hi.” Willow said smiling sweetly at the young woman.
“She is an absolute doll.” A spunky looking girl with black hair said smiling.
“Oh you have no idea.” Ronnie said with a smile. “Hi I’m Ronnie.”
“Clara Jane.” The young woman said sitting down beside. “Finally found another American.”
“Refreshing, isn’t it?” Ronnie laughed.
“You have no idea.” The dark haired girl smiled.
“So where are you from?” Ronnie asked quietly as Willow cuddled into her side. The little girl subconsciously started to play with the buttons of Ronnie’s cardigan.
“Originally Wyoming but I moved to New York when I was ten.” Clara Jane explained.
“I’ve always wanted to go to New York.” Ronnie said. “Is it as great as everyone says?”
“Even better.” She smiled. “So um Zayn tells me you are going to school here too?”
“Yeah. From what I heard, you and Becca go to school together?” Ronnie asked.
“Yeah, she is my roommate.” Becca said with a smile. “Look Ronnie I owe you an—“
“Don’t worry about it Becca, it was a misunderstanding.” Ronnie said softly. “I probably would have done the same thing if I was in your shoes to be completely honest.”
Becca offered up a fake smile. Ronnie took what she could get.
The rest of the night was filled with good music, good times, and good friends. As soon as they took their seats, Ronnie knew that they were in for a wonderful show. She was surprised by the pure talent her friends had. Each boy made a point to do something goofy whenever they walked near them causing Willow to erupt in fit of giggles. It was literally one of the best nights of her life.
Once the show was over, security whisked the group of girls back stage in order to escape the chaos of the crowd. Ronnie sat on the couch talking with Clara Jane while Becca and Elliott held their own conversation across the room. Willow was currently cuddling in Ronnie’s lap trying her best to keep her eyes open. Their conversation had been about random topics all night. From what she could tell, Clara Jane was going to be good for her friend.
After nearly ten minutes, the door opened and five sweaty boys walked in. Hellos were quickly around the room before Dean appeared announcing that two groups of fans would be joining them all in about fifteen minutes.
“So what’d you think Ron?” Louis asked cuddling with Elliott happily.
“You guys are quite good.” Ronnie said sweetly. “Willow thought so too.”
“Is she still alive?” Elliott asked looking over at their tiny friend.
“Barely.” Ronnie said looking down at the little girl.
Harry walked by and flashed her a smile, “Glad you liked it.”
Clara Jane got up to use the restroom with Becca. Zayn took advantage of the moment.
“Are you still awake there Princess Willow?” He asked tickling the young girl’s stomach.
“Yes I am Zayn.” Willow said shyly before a small laugh escape. “I’m just sleepy.”
The dark haired boy just nodded before looking at Ronnie with a smile.
“So Zayn, I’m going to hire you to follow me around and when I have a bad day you have to sing power ballads to cheer me up, okay?” She said with a playful smirk.
“Sounds good to me.” Zayn said with a slight blush.
“Hey.” Ronnie whispered urging him to move closer to him. “You’re in there dude.”
“What?” The brown eyed boy said confused as he leaned forward to hear her better.
“Clara Jane is into you, like hard core twinkly eyes and rosy cheeks into you.” She said. “Ask her out already.”
His dark skin turned as a slight shade of pink as a smile formed. “I love you Ron.”
Ronnie just winked as the young man kissed her cheek before getting up.
“Beronica.” Willow asked softly before sitting up slowly.
“What’s up Wills?” Ronnie said moving some hair from the young girl’s eyes.
“How are you not sleepy?” The little girl asked playing with her buttons again.
“Because she eats candy for breakfast.” An Irish accent said as a boy sat beside them.
Ronnie looked over to find Niall smiling down at her. His hair was a mess as a fresh shirt covered his sweaty body. He took the chance to fill up the empty space on the couch. His legs brushed up against the young girl’s as he sat a little bit closer.
“Ew! That’s not good for you Beronica.” Willow said softly.
“Says who?” Niall asked raising an eyebrow at the young girl.
“My mummy.” The little girl said with an attitude.
The sass in her reply made both young adults start laughing.
“Me mum would say the same thing.” Niall said with a smile.
“Beronica.” Willow whispered softly. “Nile talks funny.”
“It’s because he’s Irish.” Ronnie whispered back.
“Do all Iwish people talk funny?” She asked looking at the boy.
“Nope just Niall.” Ronnie said with a smirk teasing the boy.
The blonde haired boy just rolled his eyes before resting his head on her shoulder. Willow got up slowly and curled up on Niall’s lap.
Without warning the little girl started asking a million questions about being Irish. Ronnie found it absolutely adorable. She watched closely as Niall interacted with her new best friend. It was different than the night before with Harry. He seemed more delicate and in tune with her every move. He seemed to genuinely care about every word that came of that little girl’s mouth. It was perfect. After being asked what Irish people wear to sleep, the young man slyly reached out a interlocked his fingers with hers. Ronnie glanced over at him but he kept his eyes on Willow.
“Beronica.” Willow said with a loving smile.
“Yes Little Miss?” Ronnie asked yawning softly.
“I think you should date Nile.” The little girl said looking between the two adults.
Ronnie could feel her cheeks grow warm as she felt him watching her close.
“Why is that?” Ronnie asked as Niall’s grip on her hand got a little tighter.
“Because you both have yellow hair.” Willow said with a smile.
“Well that’s silly.” The young woman said fighting back a smile.
“Kaylee says boys and girls with the same hairs look good together.” She said.
“Who’s Kaylee?” Niall asked sounding extra Irish.
“Her big sister.” Ronnie said softly. “She is a huge fan.”
“Well Princess Willow, dating takes a lot more than looking good together.” Niall said.
There was a tone in his voice that confused Ronnie slightly. She didn’t know what he meant.
Willow sat Indian style on the young man’s lap looking at him, “Like what?”
“Well they have to like each other first of all. They have to laugh together and have fun together. They have to be able to tell each other everything.” He explained softly.
“Do you guys do that?” The little girl asked placing a hand on Niall’s face gently.
“Yeah, we do.” He said quietly as she started to stroke his face gently.
“Then why aren’t you dating?” Willow asked looking over at Ronnie.
Ronnie opened her mouth to speak but the door to the room opened. In walked two groups of overly excited teenage girls. The boys quickly got up to greet them—all but Niall. He slowly let go of her hand before leaning in towards Willow. He whispered something causing her bright blue eyes to go wide as a smile formed.
“What did you say to her?” Ronnie asked suspiciously.
“Secret, sorry.” He said with a smirk before looking at Willow. “Right Willow?”
“Yep.” The little girl said with big grin. “We can’t tell you Beronica.”
The older girl gave them both a playful dirty look. “Fine. I don’t want to know.”
“Yes you do!” Willow said laughing softly.
“Shouldn’t you be over there with the others Mr. Horan?” Ronnie asked softly.
“Nah, I’m fine right here.” He said with a sigh before leaning his head on her.
“Nile?” Willow asked quietly trying to fight back a yawn.
“Yes Sleepy Head?” He asked moving some hair from her face.
“Next time I go to Beronica’s, will you come over too?” She asked shyly.
“Oh, of course love.” Niall said with a smile. “Just for you.”
Her face lit up as a huge smile formed. Dean walked over breaking up the cute moment. He forced the young boy to get up and mingle with the fans who had joined the room.
“Do you mind if I keep her while I talk to them?” Niall asked quietly.
“No go ahead.” Ronnie said with a smile. “Is that alright with you Miss Willow?”
The tiny girl nodded before walking away in Niall’s arms to mingle with fans.
Forty-five minutes later, the blue-eyed boy walked back with a sleeping four-year-old.
“Dean said we could head out now.” Niall said softly. “Are you ready?”
“You’re coming with me?” Ronnie asked before yawning softly.
“Yeah.” He said softly. “I’m driving you home.”
“You don’t have to.” She said shyly looking up at him.
“If it was possible, you’d be like Willow now.” He said as a matter of fact.
“No.” She said sticking out her tongue making him laugh.
“Yeah and I’m the Easter bunny.” He said playfully rolling her eyes.
The young couple reached her car. She pulled out her keys to unlock it.
“No, I’m convinced you put girls under some magic Irish spell to make them fall asleep on you. That’s it.” She said with a playful smile.
“Right, that’s exactly it.” The young boy said attempting to place Willow in the car. The sleeping child wouldn’t let go of the young boy’s neck. It was beyond cute.
“See look at that. It’s like you’re a sleeping girl magnet.” Ronnie said amused.
“Can you just shut it and help me get her in?” He said rolled his eyes.
She walked over and placed a hand on his lower back before moving some hair from Willow’s face. She tried her best to wake up the little girl but there was no use. An idea popped into the young boy’s head. He transferred the sleeping girl over to Ronnie before hopping in the driver’s seat. Ronnie curled up in the front seat with the sleeping girl on her lap.
“Is this even legal?” She asked with a smile making sure Willow was comfortable.
“Loosen up Michaels.” He said with a smirk before turning on her car. Willow cuddled a little bit closer to Ronnie. The car was quiet as they pulled out of the parking lot and headed home.
“You know you are really good with kids, Ron.” Niall said quietly before changing lanes.
“Thank you.” She said with a soft smile. “I’ve always wanted to be a mom.”
“Well you are going to be a great one.” He said with a smile as he glanced at her.
The rest of the car ride was filled with quiet chatter. Before she knew it, her parking spot came into view and the car was being turned off. Niall hopped out of the car and opened her door before scooping up a still sleeping Willow. The young couple dropped her off at home after briefly speaking with her mother.
“Nialler.” Ronnie asked through a very loud yawn.
“What?” He said with a fake attitude.
“Will you carry me home?” She asked softly hoping he’d say yes.
The young boy bent down allowing her to climb on his back.
“Thank you.” The young woman said before leaning her head on his upper back.
“Don’t fall asleep Miss Michaels.” Niall said with a slight smile.
“I can’t help it. You’re the magician here.” She said yawning before closing her eyes.
“We’re like five seconds from home Ron.” He said as his body shook with laughter.
“But since my body is on top of you, it adds an obstacle to get home.” She said softly.
“If you are trying to say you’re fat, that’s a fucking lie.” He said shaking his head.
“No I’m saying my hotness will distract you from our destination.” She said seriously.
The young boy just started laughing at her comment making her smile.
“Just kidding Niall.” She said laughing softly to herself.
“You can’t be kidding if it’s true babe.” He said sweetly as he started climbing the stairs.
“Shit.” Ronnie mumbled causing him to stop walking.
“What’s wrong?” He asked quietly.
“I’m in a dress. I’m sure everyone can see my underwear right now.” She said.
“I kinda wish I wasn’t the one carrying you now.” Niall said playfully.
Ronnie hit him across the back of the head, “Keep it in your pants Horan.”
“Haz might get mad at me if I don’t.” He mumbled softly.
“What was that?” She said softly in his ear. Her breath caused goosebumps to form.
“Nothing.” He said softly as they reached her front door to find a curly haired boy sitting.
“Excuse me sir, what the hell are you doing?” Ronnie asked catching the boy’s attention.
“Oh good, you’re alive.” Harry said softly looking at her.
“Why wouldn’t I be? You saw me leave with Niall.” She said quietly.
“Actually I didn’t.” He said softly as he stood up.
“Oh that’s right you were too busy being Business Harry.” She said with a small smile.
“If you are implying I was flirting, I wasn’t.” He said shyly.
“And I’m the Queen of England.” She said with a playful smirk.
“If that’s the case, we’re fucked.” Niall said to ease the tension.
Ronnie laughed as she watched Niall unlock the door to her flat. Her eyes travelled to Harry. The look on his face said it all. His eyes were burning holes into Niall’s skin. Maybe Louis was right. Maybe there was something going on between Harry and Niall -- something that only they could fix.
“Are you really mad that Niall drove me home?” She asked.
“No.” He lied looking up at her. “I just didn’t see you before I left so I was uh worried.”
“Jealousy doesn’t look good on you Styles.” Ronnie said shaking her head.
“I’m not jealous of him.” Harry said in a disgusted tone.
“Then what’s really going on with you?” She asked slightly worried.
“Nothing.” He said faked a smile. “Um have a good night.”
“Night.” She said as immense guilt washed over her.
Harry headed back to his flat while Niall carried her inside. He carefully placed her on her bed before fixing his clothes.
“Just ignore him Ron. He probably thinks he did bad tonight so that’s why he’s acting weird. It happens all the time.” He said softly.
Ronnie just sighed softly, “Okay. Hey thanks for driving and for the ride.”
“Any time.” He said with a smile before kissing her forehead. “Night Love.”
“Night.” She said with a sigh as the young boy left.
I’ll Be Your Safety: Twenty-One.
Her brain started to hurt as she lay on the couch with a textbook on her lap. She was busy studying for a test she had the next day. She was in the middle of another busy week of school. So much had already happened that the group’s wild night at the club seemed like a distant memory. To top things off, Veronica Michaels had to deal with the fact that she wouldn’t be seeing her best friends for two whole weeks thanks to a small promotional tour around Europe.
It was half past ten when a knock came to her front door. She stood up slowly and peeked through the peephole. A hand was covering it. She knew it would be one of two people.
“You’re an idiot and I’m not opening the door for you.” Ronnie called out.
“Veronica, I told him not to do it.” Harry called out. “Move your hand mate.”
“But it’s supposed to be the element of surprise.” Louis said.
“We don’t have for game.” Harry sighed.
Ronnie opened the door to find her two friends ready to play football.
“We’re leaving in five minutes.” Louis said with a straight face.
“You’re coming with us because we need to win.” Harry said with a smirk.
“So you’re just using me?” She said crossing her arms over her chest.
“We need to see if you live up to your reputation.” Louis patted her head walking past her.
“Come in and I’ll get changed.” Ronnie said walking away.
After closing the door, Harry followed Louis into her bedroom.
“Is it cold outside?” She asked changing her clothes from inside her closet.
“Yeah I’d layer up.” Louis said sitting on her bed while Harry stood beside him.
“Who all is playing?” Ronnie asked walking out with a pile of clothes.
“The rest of the boys.” Harry said. “And some of our friends.”
She put on a pair of crew cut socks before putting on some sandals as she grabbed her cleats from the back of her closet.
“Your shirt is shit.” Louis said with a straight face.
“Your face is shit.” Ronnie shot back without even thinking.
Harry’s delicate laughter filled the air.
“I am offended.” Louis said over dramatically.
“I’m sorry that was mean.” She said. “I take it back Tommo. You have a cute face.”
“Thank you. Apology accepted.” He said cheerfully. “But your shirt is still shit.”
“Only morons like Man U.” She said with a straight face.
“Oh I’m sorry, did you say something about Arsenal fans?” Louis asked smugly.
“I’m gonna have to ask you to leave Lou.” She said making the two boys laugh. “Harry can stay but you are going to have to go.”
“Harry’s a Man U fan too.” Louis said as his smile grew.
“Yeah but I like him a bit better than you.” Ronnie sassed back.
Harry blushed as she went back into her closet to grab a sweatshirt.
“S’that so?” Louis smirked giving Harry a look.
Harry ignored him grabbing her phone and keys for her. Ronnie grabbed a bottle of water and a bag to put it in. She followed Louis down to his car while Harry locked up.
Before they left for an extended period of time, the small group got together with their friends to play a late night pick-up game. It was one last normal thing before things got hectic. It relieved stress and allowed them to get their mind right before they left home.
When they got to the park, butterflies formed. She hadn’t played a proper match in ages. She looked around to find Liam, Zayn, and Niall already ready to go. They were joking around with another group of boys. She slowly started to size them up. Harry and Louis got their cleats on while she braided her hair. The two boys got up and headed towards their friends. She laced up her cleats as she watched the boys knock the ball around.
Ronnie took a quick warm up lap making sure everything was loose before stretching off to the side. Her legs were tight. She bent over to stretch her hamstrings causing a string of wolf whistles and catcalls to be hurled at her. She just rolled her eyes before gracefully flipping the boys off. The pick-up lines got worse as she continued to stretch things out.
“Ready yet Ron?” Liam called over to her making sure she was okay.
She secretly picked a wedgie before nodding, “Yeah I am.”
The boys walked over towards her and introductions were made. Two out of the five of their friends tried their best to hit on her. Louis stepped in and saved her from their weak attempts. Teams were made. Harry conveniently made it so she was on his team with Louis. Zayn, Liam, and Niall were on the other team. Niall did his best to psych her out. He knew how good she was and was trying to give his team the advantage. Ronnie just rolled her eyes before shoving him playfully. His laugh filled the air making her smile.
Everyone started to get ready for the game to begin. Harry came up and stood beside her as the field was being made.
“It’s like they’ve never seen a girl before.” She mumbled noticing the other boys checking out her out.
“Let ‘em look Ron. You’ve got great legs.” Harry teased her.
She rolled her eyes making him laugh. He pulled her body into his.
“Hey thanks for the help earlier.” She said patting him on the stomach.
Harry leaned down and placed a quick kiss on her lips, “Welcome.”
Her skin grew warm. He always knew how to get her when she least expected it.
“Oi lovebirds, let’s get the show on the road.” Louis shouted from the goal.
Harry placed his hands on her waist before leaning his mouth close to her ear.
“If we win, there’s more where that came from.” His husky voice whispered seductively.
She just laughed as he smacked her butt before running off as the game began.
Growing up with boys taught Veronica Michaels a lot of things. The toilet seat will never be put down. Apparently, there was no difference between lights and darks when it came to laundry. And worst of them all, when it came to anything competitive, boys would rather lie, cheat, and steal than lose to a girl. This pick-up game proved to be no different.
The boys who didn’t know her tried their best to make her look bad. She didn’t let it get to her. Niall and Liam tried to get them to stop. But despite their efforts, it didn’t work. Boys will be boys.
Her team was winning but not by much. This just made matters worse. With each hit she took, her frustration skyrocketed. When she wasn’t getting manhandled or tripped up, names were thrown out each time she got the ball. Her friends started to get worried. They tried to intervene once more but it didn’t work. The ball went out for a goal kick and Louis quickly kicked it to her. She quickly made a fool out of one their friends named Tim and headed straight for the goal. Obviously embarrassed by the fact that a girl had showed him up, Tim maliciously took her out.
“Really, mate?” Louis called out from the goal.
Ronnie just lay on the ground looking up at the sky as a frustrated sigh escaped.
“I think we should call it quits lads.” Liam said as he walked over towards her.
Ronnie sat up slowly before removing a clump of grass from her hair, “I’m fine.”
“I’m sure you are but we can’t watch you get killed any more.” Liam said softly.
“Trust me, that won’t be happening.” She mumbled before getting up.
The young woman sighed as Niall walked over with the ball at his feet.
“Y’alright Ron?” He asked trying to look her in the eyes.
“Just peachy.” She mumbled through gritted teeth.
“You gonna kick his ass now?” The young boy asked with a smirk.
“Do I have permission to?” She said as her eyes locked with his.
Niall nodded with a smile of approval, “He’s a cunt. I can’t fucking stand him.”
Ronnie just nodded before joining the rest of the group.
“Ready when you are Ronnie.” Zayn said with a smile from in front of her.
“Or you could just take all night, whatever you want.” Tim said annoyed.
Her eyes focused on her target as she slowly adjusted her shorts. She took a step back before winding up to kick. Using every ounce of power in her tiny body, Ronnie drilled the ball into the young man’s face. Tim went down like a ton of bricks. After a few minutes, the young man stood up with blood dripping down his face.
“Y’alright there, Tim?” Ronnie asked with an innocent smile on her face. She looked over to find Harry, Niall, and Louis trying to fight back laughter.
“You fucking bitch.” He shot back before walking towards her.
“You sure about that, Tim.” Niall said moving closer to his friend.
“Got a bit of blood there.” She smirked before walking past him.
“Yeah thanks.” Tim mumbled before wiping his nose.
“Are we ready to get back to the game ladies?” Harry said with a playful smile.
“Yes sir.” Ronnie said with a smile as the ball was back in play.
An hour later, the game was coming close to the end. Ronnie’s team had a corner kick. Everyone decided that after this, they were going to call it quits. Louis decided to take it. She stood near the front post as Niall playfully pushed her around. She couldn’t help but laugh as Niall slapped her butt before running off to mark Harry instead. As the small girl went up for a header, she got a two-hand shove in the back as her head forcefully made contact with the metal goal post. Everyone froze.
The group of young men looked on in shock as she fell to the floor. Her head immediately started to throb. She tried to sit up but immediately felt dizzy. She heard someone walk towards her. It took everything in her to sit up. An angry looking boy stood beside her.
“Teach ya to play with men, love.” Tim mumbled before spitting at her.
Two hands took a hold of the Tim’s collar before throwing him to the ground. She looked up to find an extremely angry Irish boy starting to throw punches. Curse words flew out of the young man’s mouth as he stood up for her. The other boys ran over to stop the fight from getting worse. Zayn and Liam held Niall back as Harry walked up and kicked Tim in the stomach finishing the job. Louis, however, ignored the fight and ran straight to his best friend. He knelt down looking extremely worried.
“Ron?” He said softly placing a hand on her knee.
“Yeah?” She asked quietly as her eye started to hurt.
“Can you see me, kid?” Louis asked nervously.
“Yeah I can.” Ronnie said softly. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost Tommo.”
“I’m sorry I’m concerned about me best mate who just got her bell rung by a fucking metal pole.” He said with a straight face. “Do you know what day it is?”
“Wednesday...well probably Thursday now.” She said quietly.
“What’s your full name?” He said softly going through things in his head.
“Veronica Meadows Michaels.” She said shyly.
“Who’s your best friend in the whole wide world?” Louis asked with a smile.
“You.” She smiled back.
“Who did you almost have sex in public with last weekend?” He asked with a playful smirk.
Ronnie just gave him a dirty look before clutching her head in pain.
“Does your head hurt babe?” He asked—his face full of concern.
“It’s throbbing.” She said softly. “Is it swelling yet?”
The young boy nodded, “Oh yeah, Egghead.”
She breathed out slowly, “Fuck.”
Ronnie took a deep breath before getting up. Louis carefully wrapped an arm around her waist helping her walk over to where the rest of the boys were. She shut her eyes tight immediately feeling dizzy. Thinking on his feet, Louis squatted down and forced her to get on his back so he could carry her to the car. When they reached the boys, Harry stood quietly with her stuff in his hands while Zayn looked at Niall’s hand.
“Ronnie, are you okay?” Liam asked sounding extremely worried.
“I think she might have a concussion.” Louis said softly.
“What are you a doctor now Tommo?” Ronnie teased as she opened her eyes. She immediately felt dizzy and shut them quickly. “Bad idea, bad idea. I take it back.”
“Look at the knot already forming.” Liam said quietly. “Are you taking her in Lou?”
“Yeah.” He said with a sigh. “I don’t want to risk it.”
“Where are you taking me Louis?” Ronnie asked softly. “I’m not going to get murdered or sacrificed am I? Because I don’t think I can handle that right now.”
“What the hell is up with you and getting murdered Michaels?” Harry teased her.
“She’s seen way too many horror movies for her own good.” Niall said with a smile.
Ronnie looked up to agree with her friend but was immediately drawn to his hand. His knuckles were swollen and bleeding. Once he noticed what she was looking at, he tried his best to hide it from her. She looked from his hand to his eyes worried.
“What happened to your hand Ni?” She asked seriously.
“Don’t worry about me, Ron. How’s your head?” He asked.
“You know that hangover we all felt last weekend?” She said softly.
All the boys besides Liam nodded knowing exactly what she meant.
“Take that and multiply it by a million.” She said with a sigh.
“Lou, you should probably take her right now before it gets worse.” Liam suggested.
“Where are you taking me?” She asked trying to look over at Liam.
“Hospital.” Louis said as he looked over at Harry. “Can you get my stuff mate?”
The curly haired boy nodded before grabbing their stuff preparing to leave.
“Lou, take Niall with you so he can get his hand checked out.” Liam said sternly.
“I don’t wanna go to the hospital. I’m fine.” Ronnie said softly.
“I’m fine too. My hand doesn’t even hurt.” Niall said clearing his throat.
“Too bad.” Liam said looking at both of them. “You’re both going.”
With that, the group of young adults piled into their respective vehicles. One was heading to the hospital while the other was headed back home.
Veronica Michaels wished she was in the other car. She sat quietly in the back seat trying her hardest to keep her eyes open. Niall sat beside her holding his wounded hand. Louis and Harry did their best to keep everyone awake and alert. After making a wrong turn, an argument began in the front seat. The tired blonde turned to talk to her friend.
“You didn’t have to beat the crap out of him for me.” She said.
“Quit talking shit Ron.” He said with a sigh leaning against the back of the seat.
“You really didn’t have to. I mean your hand might be broken.” Ronnie said shyly.
“Well it was worth it.” Niall said with tiny smile watching her closely.
“How is punching a guy in the face worth getting a broken hand?” She said confused.
The young boy leaned in real close before whispering, “Because I was doing it for you.”
She could feel a slow blush start to form as butterflies built up in her stomach. When the car stopped in the parking lot of the hospital, the small girl leaned into him.
“Nialler?” She said softly before yawning.
“Hmm.” He mumbled turning to face her.
Ronnie placed a kiss on his cheek, “Thank you.”
Niall’s face turned bright red as opened his door to get out of the car.
After nearly an hour and a half in the hospital, the group of young adults were finally able to head back home. Much to her dismay, Ronnie was diagnosed with a mild concussion. She felt fine despite the fact that her face was slowly becoming deformed. She knew it was going to look terrible by the time she went to school. Niall on the hand had it off easy. He was currently heavily medicated to ease the pain in his hand. Nothing was broken, torn, or punctured. Besides the open wound on his knuckles, it was simply a mild bruise.
Once they got back, the boys helped the wounded up the stairs. Niall was dropped off first.
“The doctor said I was fine guys. I can go home.” She said softly.
“He didn’t say you were fine. He said there was no severe brain damage. You still have a concussion.” Harry said seriously.
“That’s basically the same thing.” Ronnie mumbled.
“You are staying with Harry and I until we get the okay from the doctor.” Louis said unlocking their flat. “End of discussion.”
“Now go inside and relax.” Harry said with a smile.
“What if I don’t want to?” She said looking at the floor.
“And why’s that?” Louis asked with a sigh.
“Because boys smell.” She whined playfully before walking inside.
Louis and Harry started laughing as they followed her inside dropping their stuff by the door. Ronnie ended up in the kitchen. She rested her elbows on the counter and placed her head in her hands. Louis walked up, grabbed two pills as well as a glass of water, and handed it to the young woman to take. He then headed towards his room to change his clothes. Ronnie downed the pills as she felt someone walk up beside her. Harry grabbed her waist before pulling her into him.
“Y-You-You said you liked the way I smell.” Harry said shyly looking her in the eyes.
Her skin grew warm as she looked at him. ” Fine, you win.”
A smile formed on the young boy’s lips. She sighed before shutting her eyes hoping it would make the pain go away faster. It didn’t. Harry slyly leaned in and kissed her when she wasn’t looking. He pecked her lips a few more times as a comforting silence feel upon them. It wasn’t long before a growling stomach killed the silence.
“Someone’s hungry.” He said looking her in the eyes.
“You’re hearing things Styles.” She said as he walked to the fridge.
“What do you want to eat?” Harry asked looking inside.
“I’m not hungry.” Ronnie said quietly.
“Veronica, the doctor said you need to eat something.” He said with a sigh.
“I can make it myself.” She said softly looking at him.
“What’s a guy gotta do to take care of you Michaels? First you don’t want to go to the doctors, then you don’t want to come inside with me, now I can’t cook for you.” He said walking over to her. “What do you have against me taking care of you?”
“Nothing.” She said with a sigh looking at him. “I just—“
“You just what babe? You just take care of everyone else before yourself. You just make sure everyone else has eaten or slept or washed up before even thinking about doing it yourself. You just always do way too much to please others.” He said pulling her waist into his. He placed a quick kiss on her lips. “You just go relax on the couch while I make you something to eat, ‘kay?”
“Okay.” She whispered softly.
After nearly twenty minutes of talking to Louis in the living room, a delicious plate of Harry’s infamous tacos was placed in front of her. She had to admit he was a great cook. The trio ate and chatted briefly about the game that had taken place. Both boys were more than pleased with her performance. In fact, they found it admirable that she kept her cool as long as she did. Neither of them would have been able to do so if they were her.
Once they finished their meals, Ronnie tried to convince them to let her go home multiple times. None of it worked. Harry, however, convinced Louis to go to bed. He claimed that Ronnie didn’t need two babysitters and offered to make sure she didn’t fall asleep. Graciously, Louis accepted and headed straight for bed. The young couple quietly headed for the couch. She crawled on top of him as soon as he sat down.
“I probably shouldn’t be laying all over you. I’m dirty.” She said quietly.
“Did you want to take a shower?” Harry asked.
“I don’t have anything to wear.” Ronnie said playing with the hem of his shirt.
“I have stuff you can borrow. And besides, I’m sure it’ll make you feel better.” He said.
“Well, okay then.” She said sitting up on top of him.
“Um Ron? I don’t know how to say this but um I’d feel more comfortable if I sat outside the shower while you’re in there just in case you fall and hit your head or end up dozing off or something. I don’t want you to fall into a coma.” Harry said shyly.
She couldn’t help but smile at how cute he was. He was proving that some boys actually do care about her well being. He proved that some boys didn’t just care about themselves. He proved that he was worth it and she loved that. She kissed him quick before allowing him to accompany her to the bathroom.
“Why don’t you go get ready and I’ll get you some clothes?” He said.
Ronnie nodded before heading to the bathroom.
After a few minutes alone, the young woman slipped into the shower as warm water soon comforted her aching body. A content sigh escaped as she started to get lost in her thoughts. It wasn’t soon before long that she heard someone walk in and sit down.
“Ronnie?” Harry asked placing his head in his hands.
“Yeah Haz.” She said grabbing some soap.
“I’m sorry you got hurt tonight.” He said gently. “I didn’t expect that to happen.”
“It’s okay.” The young woman said. “Shit happens.”
A small sigh escaped from the young boy’s lips as he shut his eyes. He felt absolutely horrible because she got hurt. He was the one who wanted her to come play with them. He was the one who convinced her to join. Now he was the reason she had a concussion. He rested his head against the bathroom wall as her voice filled the air.
Two Adele songs later, the water turned off causing his eyes to shoot open. She stuck a hand outside of the shower politely asking for a towel. He stood up before grabbing a towel from the cupboard and handing it to her. Without a word, the young boy left the bathroom to give her some privacy. He retreated to his bed where he waited patiently for her to emerge. Nearly ten minutes later, the young woman walked out of the bathroom in a pair of his soccer shorts, warm socks, and his favorite purple jumper.
“Thank you for letting me borrow something Harry.” She said softly.
He just smiled before taking a hold of her hand leading her out of his room.
“I think you should wear my clothes more often.” He whispered in her ear.
Ronnie’s skin grew warm as she looked up at him. “Why?”
“They look better on you than they’ve ever looked on me.” Harry smiled sweetly.
She rolled her eyes as they ended up in the living room.
“We should probably ice that knot on your head.” He said quietly before grabbing a bag of frozen peas for her. “Wanna watch a film to pass the time?”
“I guess so.” She said with a yawn as she looked at the clock. “I want to sleep.”
“Nope not allowed.” He shrugged. “You aren’t falling into a coma on my watch.”
“Harrrrrry!” Ronnie whined playfully before pouting on the couch.
“Veronicaaaaaa!” He mimicked before throwing the bag of peas at her.
She sighed before placing the bag on her head. “Fuck this is cold.”
Harry fought a laugh before plopping down on the couch. She stood up before lying across his lap while keeping the cold bag on her gnarly looking wound.
“You’ve been hanging around Niall too much. You sound just like him.” He said softly.
“Sorry.” Ronnie said shyly.
He stroked her cheek gently, “You’re wounded it’s fine. What do you want to watch?”
“Anything is fine.” She said with a loud yawn. “I won’t be watching.”
“Veronica, you aren’t going to sleep.” He said nudging her. “I’m not letting you.”
“It could be just like Sleeping Beauty though, a lovely prince can come and just kiss me and I’d wake up.” She said sounding like a little kid.
Harry started laughing before putting on some romantic comedy.
“Where are we going to find a prince at this time of night?” He asked.
“Well Willow thinks you’re a prince so that’ll work for me.” She said sweetly.
Harry just leaned down and placed a sweet kiss on her lips, “Thanks.”
“So does that mean I can go to sleep?” She asked with a little pout.
“Eh, nice try but no.” He said making her laugh. “Let’s watch the movie.”
She sighed before turning toward the glowing box across the room.
Three movies and two laugh attacks later, the clock in the kitchen struck six. School started in an hour and thirty minutes. She didn’t want to go. She let out a sigh before trying to balance a frozen bag of strawberries on her head. Harry sat quietly playing with her hair trying to focus on the movie that was playing. It wasn’t working though.
“Ron?” He said softly causing her to look up at him. He looked nervous.
The curly haired boy sighed softly before focusing on the table instead of her.
“I’m sorry I didn’t beat him up for you like Niall did.” Harry said shyly.
Ronnie sat up on his lap causing the bag to fall. She placed it on the coffee table before trying her best to get his attention but he was doing his best to not look at her. “Haz.”
“He hurt you and I did nothing.” He said softly. “What kind of guy does that make me?”
“Harry.” Ronnie sighed placing her hand on his chin. She turned him so their eyes met. She could see that he was tearing himself up inside over it. “Who stayed with me the entire time at the hospital? Who has taken care of me from the moment we got home?”
He sighed softly as his cheeks turned a slight shade of pink. “But—“
“Answer me Styles. Who has stayed awake with me all night, when they clearly didn’t have to, just so I wouldn’t fall asleep and die? Hmm, who?” She said smiling happily.
A small smile formed on the young boy’s face as his blush got a little deeper. She looked him in the eyes and knew that he knew what she was trying to say. Harry tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear before leaning in and kissing her softly.
“What do you want for breakfast babe?” He whispered softly after pulling away.
“Cereal’s fine but I’m not going to school.” She whispered back.
“You have a test you can’t miss.” Harry said with a knowing smile.
“I just want to sleep.” She said looking at him.
“How bout this? I drop you off at school, you take your test, and then I’ll pick you up and bring you back here. If the doctor calls when he said he was going to and gives you the all clear, we both can go sleep in my bed.” He offered sweetly.
“Okay.” Ronnie said with a smile. “I can do that.”
“Great, now what do you want to eat?” He said sweetly.
“Cereal.” She said getting up slowly as he followed behind her.
The curly haired boy hit her on the butt before walking away.
“Harry wait.” She said softly causing the lanky boy to turn around.
Ronnie walked over and wrapped her arms around his torso before leaning up and placing a sweet kiss on his lips, “Thanks for caring so much.”
“It’s my job, love.” He said before kissing the top of her head.
