The rhyme is a familiar enough, but the way Narancia's pointing finger twitches back as he falters at the end of it, losing nerve--is notably less so.

"…'Kiss me'," she finishes for him, absently. "That particular rhyme… I never understood its purpose." A gloved hand braces thoughtfully under her chin as she studies him from the distance that has stretched between them, tries to put a name to the thing his face is doing right now with little success. In her usual inscrutable manner, Fran takes one, two, three purposeful, composed steps to clear the distance between them until they are a scant few inches apart. Perhaps because she's trying to gauge any change in his behaviour, her eyes remain locked on him for much longer than she typically makes a habit of. Fran tips her head up and to the side, a beat passes, and then, slowly…

…She raises an index finger in a more lethargic approximation of his earlier gesture, and taps it once to the space between his eyebrows.

"…Because surely if you really wanted to taunt someone for being unable to catch you, you wouldn't say something that necessitates their coming into your personal space like this, right?" Her head tips to the other side now, curious. "...You didn't dodge away. I expected you to."

     That this statement is coming from such a young, gentle face unnerves her somewhat. Certainly, Halland knows what the girl says to be a fact, but it troubles her that it's being offered to her from what looks to be a teenager. People of that age should just be out having fun (or so she's been told), not thinking to advise strangers against letting their guards down. Is something truly off about this, or is she just being paranoid?

     "...Of that I am well aware, mademoiselle , trust me." Halland's response is careful, measured, professional. "If it eases your mind any, I’ll be rejoining some of my coworkers shortly." Technically true; there are several Speedwagon employees in the area she can call upon if need be.

     Her eyebrows furrow, mouth set in a fine line as she weighs her next words carefully.

     "I wonder... has anything strange happened in the area recently for you to offer me such advice?"

     Hearing the word ‘hand’ before anything else has Mio flipping her palm face-up on sheer muscle memory--errand-runner instinct. She figures it’s keys, loose change--something like that. “Ah--there’s no need to treat me to anything. You just need me to hold...” Once the rest of his words trickle into her sluggish brain and she realizes it’s his hand he’s asking her to hold, her face (predictably) shifts into one of bewildered surprise, face paling then flushing in rapid succession. “...Huh?”

     “Your hand?!” Her open palm twitches between them, but she can’t draw it back now. She's unable to puzzle out why he’s asking for this of all things, but he does look a little troubled by something, maybe?  “I--really don’t understand why, Oikawa-san, but it seems like this is time-sensitive, so that’s fine! If you think it’ll help, I will--hold your hand with everything I’ve got...!”

     With everything I’ve got?! What kind of advanced hand-holding is thaaat?!

     “Yerin is the cutest girl in the universe!!” Strap in ladies this is gonna be a long one. “She’s got so many cute points! Where do I start, aaaaargh...!! Okay! The way her face kinda pinches up when she’s concentrating really hard on moulding riceballs into cat shapes and stuff, or figuring out a display for the store is cute! The way she ducks loose strands of hair behind her ear when her hair’s up is so charming! When she does that little sheepish giggle it really hits me right here!” She claps a hand loudly over her heart, doubling over dramatically for a moment before straightening up again and resuming. “Hmmmm--one time I caught her doing this little shoulder-shimmy while humming when the shop was empty and it was adorable!! Oh,  but I think maybe she was a little embarrassed when I caught her doing that--strike that from the record!”

     “Anyway, her eyes are soooo warm and dark and pretty, especially when they’re all lit up ‘cause she’s really enthusiastic about something! That’s the best! I love seeing her get excited about stuff, even those times where I don’t really know what it’s about! Oh, and it’s really cute seeing her when she’s with her family, too! Yerin’s Yerin no matter what, but  there’s something really special about seeing how she interacts with them, too!”

His words--whether they are his first or one of many attempts he has made to reach her, she cannot be sure--finally manage to cut through the fog, though she almost wishes they didn't. There is no calm, rational way to justify herself--to explain the tight curl of her posture on the floor of the supply closet, the comforting press of narrow space she has always sought out when the textures are too loud and the sounds too bright and the light too acrid and bitter on her tongue. Summer of all seasons is difficult for her. That awful, cloying heat and the cicadas--always the cicadas. Just like that summer--the summer--when Fran had drawn in trembling breaths through a gurgling throat, barely in her own body as something detached inside of her and took the reigns to keep its host alive. Cold-fingered and clumsy with Sister Morphine--too thorough by half. Maybe if she had been less so, something of worth could have been salvaged. Someone. Instead, it was just Fran, owl-eyed and soundless in the wake of her father’s grief, held tight in blistered, bloodied hands as he promised her, promised--

Fran digs her nails into her palms until the sharp jut of them dispels the static in her ears again. She smooths her hands out over her knees, rubs them in restless circles. She doesn't know what face she's making now, only feels the furrow of her brows, the tight press of her mouth, the exhausted droop to her eyes. She thinks of what to say, opens her mouth several times in soundless breath and mouthed approximations. Hands tapping over her knees, she swallows, throat dry, and finally grasps something.

"...loud today. the cicadas." This is what she manages in a rough, low tone, knowing well how absurd it sounds. A child's complaint. Her shoulders hike--deep breath, then she shakes her head, braces her hands on the floor to push herself up. She doesn't dare look to Diego--sets her sights on the bottles lining the shelves instead, making an inventory of them in her head to orient herself. So be it. Let him assume what he will of her--that she's foolish and petulant. Maybe it’s better if he does.

...And yet--

"...When my mother died, they were loud then, too," tumbles from her mouth before she can stop it, blank stare fixed the hydrogen peroxide as she turns the bottle so the label faces out. Despite it all, there is still that odd hunger in her--the desire to be understood. She lays the admission at his feet like something hollow-boned and deathly-quiet, the worst sort of gift. "...That's all."

Something in the way he phrases it, maybe--like he might truly want to know. “Polite conversation is just a series of memorized pleasantries with minimal genuine interest, and if you don’t perform them just so, the other party becomes frustrated with you, so it’s tiresome. Rather than that, I would prefer to talk to someone I already have business with, since there’s something concrete to build off of.”
