"...Fun? Our parents fought that entire trip, Murakami."

"Wh--Really? I never even noticed... I guess I was having so much fun, I didn't think about how everyone else was doing..."

"...I liked Minō park...and the aquarium... The amusement park was loud. I liked Minōpark."

"Did you? You were so quiet the whole time we were there--Neesan was woried you'd gotten sick or something! ...It really was pretty, though! I remember neesan let me sit on her shoulders so I could see everything!

"Aunt Iaki made sure we got to see everythig. It was...fun."

...This was the right room, right? Kouta glanced down at the slip of paper in his hands before giving a cautious knock on the door.

His latest magic show wasn't long from now, and Kouta wasn't exactly prepared. He had a couple of tricks up his sleeve, so to speak, but his trusty and fluffy assistant was back at his home with his sisters! He used a rabbit for a few of his acts, and now he was short one. A problem indeed, but there's no problem that can't be solved! Someone mentioned there was a rabbit breeder that went to school here...

Kouta glanced at the doorplate and back at the paper. Apparently this was supposed to be the right room.

                      ...Knock, Knock.

"Excuse me, Byrne-san? Are you in...?"

Kouta couldn't say for sure how he'd gotten himself into this situation, really. He was too caught up in thinking of ways it all could have been avoided.

      Maybe he should have spoken up sooner. Maybe he should have taken a different route that day. Maybe he should have left school a little later. Maybe he should have cut his hair; he'd been meaning to all week, after all. If he'd done just one of those things, maybe...just maybe he wouldn't have gotten himself wrapped up in this.

      He wouldn't be working at a maid cafe, covering a shift for a stranger who'd mistaken him as a girl.

It wasn't the first time someone had made that mistake, and it probably wouldn't be the last. It's not that he was the type to get especially offended by being misgendered, but...a maid cafe? 

     The boy shoved the climbing anxieties back down, straightening the ribbon on his chest in stride. This would be fine, he could do it, no problem! He was helping someone who needed help, after all! As long as no one from school saw him like this...he'd be fine, right? As long as no one could tell he was a boy, he'd be fine! Things like this happen in anime and manga all the time, right?

     He hardly had any time to get himself settled down before a new customer had come in. In and out, like little breaths. Speaking of breaths, the temporary maid took in a deep one before flashing a (somewhat nervous) smile.

Mercy kill -Tsukino for Kouta?

Any confidence the boy had was withering away into nervous little laughs. He blindly grabbed for the girl's hand, gripping it tightly. Like he could keep what was left of her life from escaping if he held on tightly enough.

            He didn't want to look.

How could Kouta even consider kil...Tsukino was his precious friend! There was no way she could die like this, right? It didn't make any sense at all! And yet she was--Tsukino was...

Even if she was hurting like this, there was...there was no way he could do something like that, right? That was...it was just too cruel! Tsukino was a magical girl! Or, she was to him! There was no way he could... After all, there was a chance that she would be okay in the end, right?

                             A small, tiny chance.

       { ✮ }» "You'll be okay, Oshiro-san! Help'll--some people are already on there way, so... Just, just hang on a little longer, okay?! You'll, y-you'll be okay!" He smiled while his voice shook, and his eyes betrayed him with little waterfalls.

                                             He was selfish in the end.
