IC 342 - Hiding behind the Milky Way Galaxy, making it very hard to see.
IC 342: The Hidden Galaxy
IC 342, also called the Hidden Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy located about 10 million light years away towards the constellation Camelopardalis. The galaxy lies near the equator of the Milky Way’s disk, placing the bulk of our own dusty galaxy between us and IC 342 and obscuring our view. Without this dust, IC 342 would be one of the brightest galaxies in the sky.
This image shows the center of IC 342, emphasizing its vibrant activity. The galaxy contains an HII nucleus, a central region characterized by high amounts of ionized hydrogen, which is likely responsible for the creation of many new stars. Here, star forming regions can be seen in blue, along with red cooler regions of gas, and dark lanes of dust.

Hubble’s Hidden Galaxy
This image was taken in 2017. Still mesmerizing to this day. Hubble’s Hidden Galaxy IC 342 is a challenging cosmic target. Although it is bright, the galaxy sits near the equator of the Milky Way’s galactic disk, where the sky is thick with glowing cosmic gas, bright stars, and dark, obscuring dust. In order for astronomers to see the intricate spiral structure of IC 342, they must gaze through a…

Hidden Galaxy
Hidden Galaxy IC 342 via #NASA #APOD #Astronomy Picture Of the Day. http://buff.ly/2sYepPN ⠀ ⠀ Similar in size to large, bright spiral galaxies in our neighborhood, IC 342 is a mere 10 million light-years distant in the long-necked, northern constellation Camelopardalis. A sprawling island #universe, #IC342 would otherwise be a prominent #galaxy in our night sky, but it is hidden from clear view and only glimpsed through the veil of stars, gas and dust clouds along the plane of our own #MilkyWay galaxy. Even though IC 342's light is dimmed by intervening cosmic clouds, this sharp telescopic image traces the galaxy's own obscuring dust, blue star clusters, and glowing pink star forming regions along spiral arms that wind far from the galaxy's core. IC 342 may have undergone a recent burst of star formation activity and is close enough to have gravitationally influenced the evolution of the local group of galaxies and the Milky Way.
