George Floyd Was a Security Guard

Breaking glass, graffiti,

      setting cars on fire,

anyone who says it’s justice

      is a fucking liar.

If you hurt the innocent,

      it’s justice you’re refuting,

there’s a difference between protest

      and the ugly crime of looting.

Honor those who’ve fallen,

      like Mr. Floyd the man

who in his life protected peace,

      so carry out his plan.

Justice for George Floyd.

The wheels of justice are criminally slow, but sweeping institutional change must occur NOW before we can even think of healing our hopelessly divided and wounded nation…

1. All 4 officers involved in George Floyd’s murder need to be charged NOW.

2. Derek Chauvin’s charge should be upgraded to 2nd degree murder (a long shot, but should).

3. All nationwide Mayors and Police Chiefs must IMMEDIATELY adopt the policing strategies/tactics outlined by the Black Lives Matter organization to dramatically reduce these violent incidents.

4. Non-violent protests must continue across the nation to hold officials feet to the fire until they act.

5. City, State and Federal Government must not escalate the situation by inviting military tactics to stamp out peaceful protests.

6. We all must VOTE as if our lives (especially the lives of African-American’s) depend on it.

There is so much more to overcome, but we have to start somewhere.

First Responder

“If you can say, ‘I can’t breathe’

it means you can breathe!”

      He said it laughing.

He was a fireman, a first responder,

his best friend is a cop.

“…Until you can’t,” I added.

“What do you say when you can’t breathe?”

He looked at me.

Yeah, there’s really no answer to that.

“You do realize,” I said,

“That when someone says, ‘I can’t breathe’

it means, ‘I’m having trouble breathing        

because of what you’re doing to me,

and if you keep doing it, I’m going to die.’

but it’s usually hard to say all that

when someone has their knee on your neck.”

“It doesn’t matter,” he responded. “It’s total

bullshit, he was resisting arrest.”

“Oh, it matters,” I said. “It matters.”

Funny how someone’s first response

is often incorrect.
