January of 2009, this woman called me into her office to tell me she "wouldn't be retaining me". Her words exactly. My previous principal saw something in me as a volunteer and pulled my into the classroom. However, I remember very distinctly a conversation with Mrs. Evans when she told me "It's not about you caring, Ms. Owens", when I told her I cared too much about my students to let them fail. For the last 8 years, I have been doing everything in my power to not return to a public school classroom, when it finally registered that it was never the classroom, the children or the parents.
