“We’re not–what do you mean?” Vaggie demands, pushing the expenses list out of her face.

“His Majesty knows buildings run on electricity, not where electricity comes from,” Al explains dryly. “A new hotel would make Charlie happy, so he poofed one into being and said ‘let there be light.’” He shrugs, unconcerned. “The building runs on electricity because of course it does, but as far as His Majesty is concerned, electricity is just part of the atmosphere that makes the lights go.”

Part of how I express my love of language is through writing multilingual characters. That gets hard when I’m working with a character who speaks a language I don’t, and that doesn’t have many online resources because it’s not a popular L2.

To which end I’m trying to find somebody who speaks Louisiana Creole who could check the grammar of a single line of dialogue.

I don’t suppose anybody who follows this blog speaks Creole or knows someone who does?

haha, i'm glad to infect another person! xD now, i admit that it's been years since i read susan kay's phantom book, which is the version that does the most exploring of erik and nadir's relationship (nadir being the man referred to as 'the persian' and 'the daroga' in leroux's book), so i'm sure there's a LOT i've forgotten or that i may be misremembering.

but i think it's really interesting, as nadir is literally erik's only real friend, the only person who truly knows him and has known him for actual decades. nadir saw erik at, arguably, his worst in mazandaran, when his entire job was to creatively kill people, but he also saw erik's compassion and humanity in how erik loved nadir's son and helped to ease his passing when he was terminally ill.

then, when nadir's wife has died, he moves from persia to paris just to install himself as erik's conscience, to bitch at him about his bad choices and try to badger him into making better choices... which sounds something like a marriage to me, lmao.

i can't remember whether nadir ever saw erik without his mask - i want to say yes, but i can't recall - but he's certainly the last person alive who knows the most of erik's dark past, who's seen the worst of him, and he still cares. maybe erik is the only real friend he has too, the only person left who understands him after he lost his family.

don't get me wrong, i like erik and christine and the sweeping gothic romance of it, but i also like the idea of, in the aftermath of christine leaving, erik picking up the pieces with nadir's help and realizing that this person has been there all along, this person who sees him and genuinely cares for him. and maybe it's not grand opera arias or any other dramatic gestures, but it's real and it's steady and it's good. they're old and exhausted and deeply damaged by life, but they have each other, and personally, i think that's just as romantic.

it also doesn't hurt that i like to headcanon nadir as oded fehr (ardeth bay from the mummy). 😉

Statement: it’s frankly weird that "bubble gum" and "cotton candy" are their own flavors

Question: What are your opinions on glitter?

*cracks knuckles* prepare for some opinions because i’m stuck on this flight for another 19 minutes and this is the most entertaining thing in the past 3 hours!

HONESTLY you’re so right! my sister used to get the bubble gum flavored ice cream as a kid where the ice cream was bubble gum flavored but there was also pieces of gum stuck in it. always felt weirdly inception-y.

I love glitter, I just hate cleaning it up. glitter nail polishes are always my fav to look at but I hardly ever use them because I h a t e having to scrub it off when I want to change colors. my friend in high school used to call glitter “theatre herpes” because the theatre kids kept tracking it into other classes with them by mistake after working on sets. I want to finish making my sailor neptune cosplay, which I lack the skill set for, but want to make on my own because I want it to be the ultimate sparkly version.

ooh, great question! i will give you two, which have revolutionized my life in very small ways:

if you're making hot chocolate with boiling water instead of in the microwave, pour just a little bit of water in at first - just enough to cover the hot chocolate mix. then stir it into a thick slurry first, before adding the rest of the water (+ a dash of milk, is my preference.) this helps prevent the cocoa mix from forming big clumps when you pour it all in! (if you're making fancy stovetop hot chocolate, i admire you but have no advice for you)

if you like scented soaps, buy nice scented soaps. doesn't have to be all the time, but treat yourself every once in a while. it's a small luxury that makes my life feel disproportionately better to the amount it actually costs. every time you get clean, you get to smell the nice thing! and sometimes the soap is strong enough that your whole bathroom just smells more lemony (or insert scent of your choice) than usual while it's around! we've all gotta get clean on a regular basis, so if you can add a little extra something nice to the process, i recommend it.

Uhm. Hm. Hm!!!!! I don't think this is probably what you had in mind, but I've been really annoyed about chocolate not all being slave free lately, because I'm not used to trying to think about it so I'm always like "ooh hot choccy" and I put it in my little cart and I'm well into the bread aisle by the time I remember The Slavery Part and then I have to be like :/ and then go put it back. Or I forget, then I get annoyed. I really wish that whole industry could figure itself out so a) less suffering b) I could just have my hot chocolate in peace.

@icannotreadcursive what about you? + what made you think of this question? I love a random ask as I said but I am truly blanking on where this one could've come from. One of the most truly truly random asks I've gotten

33) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?

This is a good question. I think the one that comes to mind is someone fairly recently commented on a fic I wrote like 2016-2018 saying that they were rereading it cause they loved it so much. And ya know the idea that these dumb little stories can stick with people over 4 years later. It’s nice.

41) What’s you favourite minor character you’ve written?

Hmmmm that‘s also a good question. I guess it depends on what you think of as minor. Sticking in Star Trek I like writing for Nog and Jake Sisko. I also like when I can write about Uhura cause I love her. I should do that more.
