Jasper National Park, Canada (by Dan Schykulski)

Can you tell me more about the ice roads? We don't have those here and I'm intrigued
We live in the Northwest Territories (in Canada), which is pretty remote as far as Canada goes. It doesn’t have a lot of roads, but it has a ton of lakes, so in the winter some of those lakes are turned into ice roads. Ice roads usually open towards the middle of January (i.e. when the ice is thick enough for vehicles) and usually close around the end of March, when the ice starts to thaw from the edge of the lakes. Some roads go between multiple lakes - the portions of solid ground are called portages and are usually pretty narrow. Mostly these roads are used for remote communities to bring in supplies from Yellowknife (the capital) or to bring supplies up to the mines. A lot of places stock up via the winter road for the whole year, because it’s really expensive to fly supplies in.
We’ve been using two ice roads this winter. The first is the Dettah ice road, which is on Great Slave Lake right in Yellowknife. It connects some primarily-Dene communities like Dettah and Lutselk’e to Yellowknife (fun fact: Dettah is actually connected to Yellowknife via an all-season road as well, but the ice road cuts the distance from nearly 30km to only 6km). The Dettah ice road is a really well-maintained, convenient road that is mostly used by regular traffic, so lots of people use it for recreation (fat biking, kicksledding, skating, etc). This is where we go skating and where we took Mav kicksledding.
The second road we’ve used is the Tibbitt to Contwyoto winter road. This is a mining road maintained and used primarily by the mines (and people hunting). This road is also used by researchers who want to deploy monitoring units out in the remote north-east part of the territory, which is otherwise inaccessible (that’s why we were out there). Because it’s mostly used by semi trucks (and it’s pretty far out of town), it’s not really used for recreation.
Either way it’s a pretty cool thing to see!
(Hope that helps, anon)
Vancouver!!! My home city. Doesn't it look beautiful? Oh except every side street & sidewalk is completely iced over. Literally, people are skating on the roads. Winter. We are not used to you. Go away and bring back our normal rain!

I've been building some stuff:3
I got an awning for my base!
A long underground tunnel to a lush cave complete with sealed tunnels through cave lakes. (Tunnel pictured. To be rebuilt wider with glass walls and lighting at a later date).
I adore these copper golems. I'm gunna name my first three Mr, Ms and Mx Copper respectively and then probably more silly names like Green, Rusty and Clanky.
This is the first makings of my forever world:)
Things I have planned:
A transit system with the following rules:
Walking/riding paths are named.
Subway rail systems are lettered and could be named.
Overland/elevated rail systems are numbered and could be named.
Elevated Ice paths are named IX(I1,I2,I3, etc) and may also be traditionally named.
Elevated water highways are named WX(W1, W2, W3, etc) and may also be traditionally named.
Nether has all of these rules, but with "N" In front of every name.
N Aether Road
NE, NC lines.
N2 lines.
Portals are given "P"(P1, P2, P3) along with traditional names.
I want to build stations for every major build esp big areas like bases. Subway, overland, water and ice lines should all intersect so I can change networks if I need to. I do eventually plan on having Elytra airports with connections to broader transit options. Everything will be built and fully signed. I would also like to expand everything I do Overland to underground and connect the two.
If I ever get the aether mod working I'll also get stuff made for it. Every world I make will have EXTENSIVE and accessible public transit.
Someone invite me to their server. I'll connect everyone esp if you just give me infinite resources. I'll have nomenclature, signage, coordinates, stopping points with food, tools and beds along the walking roads. Maps. All of it.
I live in Texas and I have never driven on ice until today. I work retail at bank and I’m so mad that they made me still come in early in the morning during ice showers in 20 degree weather. I drove so slow because I was sliding and my ABS kept engaging whenever I had to stop. I’m enraged because of how terrified I was during my drive. I will not be doing this ever again.
Wood pulp, steel cables: Scientists study how to make ice roads last longer
Wood pulp, steel cables: Scientists study how to make ice roads last longer
The road should have been frozen solid, but it was anything but.
Research is being done to develop systems that can keep the roads in the far north frozen longer as they are passable only when frozen. The winters are getting warmer and the ice roads are getting less dependable, leaving northern communities without the goods they need.
This is the kind of research we need to fund, to mitigate the…
