Here’s some suggestions for a Disability- & Mental Illness-Friendly Conversation Openers:
Inspired by this post, with suggestions of how to answer that “So what do you do?” questions in conversation, when you can’t work or go to school because of illness or disability.
That’s great, and all. But some people might want to know something else to ask that won’t be so awkward to begin with. I’m not an expert, or a therapist, or anything, but here are some ideas off the top of my head, that I wouldn’t mind being asked at a party. Maybe others can add to this:
What’s something that’s making you happy, lately?
Have you read any good books (seen movies, played video games, etc.), lately? Yes. It’s a cliche. But it’s a cliche for a reason.
And, yes. You can talk about the weather. Another cliche. But at least it’s something you both have in common, and whatever their opinion turns out to be, you can commiserate.
How do you know (the host)?
Remember: this isn’t meant to be a deep or detailed conversation, just a chance to establish a first connection with a potential not-stranger, and see how you fit together. After all, if this is at a cocktail or dinner party, the host invited you both, so likely hoped you’d get along.
Another advantage of questions like these, over questions about jobs or school? They affirm a person’s inherent worth outside a Capitalist system of Productivity.
“I see no one has ever bothered to teach you manners.”
He tensed up and swallowed visibly. What did he do wrong? Was it anything he said? “I’m so sorry.” Gaze wandered before he offered him one of his lollipops. Probably not what he wanted but he couldn’t think of anything else at the moment.
“Did you think I wouldn’t notice you watching me?”
Julian tilted his head to the side with a loopy smile while twirling a strand of hair between his fingers. “How could I not? With such a handsome man in front of me.” His voice playful. Pushing aside any insecure thought that swirled in his head. That beak made him think of some villain. Stumbling upon someone like that made him feel uncomfortable. Though some people just liked to spook others by dressing up in a weird way. Wannabe villains or wannabe heroes. Though the other’s demeanor didn’t give off that wibe.

Are you the kind of teacher who was dreading the end of summer, or were you excited to get back to a routine and your students? I admit, I was the first example. I didn’t want to give up my lazy mornings, my lunch with friends, my time with my hubby, and just being “Summer Judi.” Believe it or not, not all students will be as excited to be back on their first day either. When you are a middle…

6 facts about me
Tagged by : @avenger-hawk , Thanks Hawk
I am bad at small talk , I wish I was better at it- because everywhere around me I see 90% of the people engaging in small talk.
I love Dogs - a LOT! and they love me too. I am a dog person, But my first pet is a fish named Bubbles. Its deep blue-green in colour and very pretty, and very friendly.
I can watch anything on TV and not get bored, It's like my super-power or something.
Generally I am always having a blast in my own company. I am also an only child, so I think being alone comes naturally to me. My friends tend to get frustrated with my love for being alone and often complain quite vehemently , about me disappearing for days at end.
My name means “Ray of Light” in Sanskrit (It is the ancient Indian Language , generally used for religious scriptures) . It also means “Lightning” in that same language.
I consider myself a Jack of all trades, I have learnt a lot of things and used to participate in every competition as a kid, elocution , essay writing competition, drawing ,yoga, karate , indian classical dance forms, art , soft toy making ,robotics , carpentry and furniture making , metal working ,weaving , knitting, block printing, clay and pottery , theatre ( in college i was quite involved in the theatre group). Basically I pick up a lot of skills, I am quite good with a lot of them, but I wouldn't say I mastered any of them :)
I am not tagging anyone specifically for this -- because this is directed to the anons. if you are an anon who sends me an ask, consider yourself tagged and do it.
