After a bit of work with the Dremel, the brooch is almost done! I've sanded off the air bubbles from the mold (which were actually smooth protrusions because molds are negatives) and made a place to put the magnet (since setting it in the resin didn't work as expected). I'd initially planned to set two for stability, but I'm used to working with MUCH smaller neodymium magnets (1/8" x 1/32" and 1/16" x 1/32"), so I wasn't expecting them to be so strong. They'd basically leap at each other whenever I tried to set two down, so I decided to go with just one in the middle. After I glued in the gem (using E6000 for that and the magnet), I use the flash to show off the foil shine. Now it's ready for the high gloss clear coat! The entire brooch is made from @iceresin. How easy it is to make ice cubes out of epoxy resin

After doing hours of research on different epoxy resins, I decided I wanted to try Alumilite’s Amazing Clear Cast. I was excited because it did well on yellowing tests and was significantly cheaper than Ice Resin, the only other epoxy I’ve tried.

I burned my lungs.

Yeah, me and this product just did not mix. I followed the directions, but apparently should have also worn a respirator on top of our air purifier (we have one that actually removes the VOCs). Luckily it didn’t seem to affect Z like it did me. I rushed around and shoved the epoxy in the incubator to contain the fumes a bit more, opened a window and the skylight, and left the apartment.

My lungs still feel raw today, but they’re doing better. It should be cured enough to try and salvage my molds in a little bit. Guess I’m going to stick with Ice Resin, because I don’t know if I even want to risk that happening again.

Anyone else have this happen, or have any recs?
