"If you happen to have anything flavoured with pumpkin on you right now, and are willing to share, I swear we'll be best friends for life," she started, looking hopeful at him. Really though, she was starving.
"I love you, but I really wish I didn’t.”
Maisie felt her entire body go hot and cold in the same instant. Her world was simultaneously exploding and imploding, like a star being born and dying inside her. He finally said he loved her but with such regret, like he hated himself for even admitting it.
"I-I wish you didn’t either."
That wasn’t what she meant to say but there it was, filling the silence between them and stealing the all the air from the room. She turned away from him, biting her lip and fighting to keep the pain inside her.
