A more detailed character meme! Send me a character and I’ll answer…
aww THANK YOU <3 And oh boy that would be hard
What I like about them: I like his way of moving in general. I really like his face too. And I am quite found of how overdramatic he can be. I also think that his dynamic with most of the characters can be interesting. I like his past and the implications around him (may be my headcanon taking over but, ye, I feel like he has communication problems that I actually find interesting if it is indeed what was thought by the writters. More on the headcanon’s part ;O)
What I dislike about them: My major issue with Genesis is much more on how he steals other people’s moments. That’s my problem with Genesis. While I don’t hate him per se and that I undertand that a villain needs to be a little threatening that he needs to be quite here (especially since we couldn’t really afford to use the others villains as villains for CC) but I think Genesis takes too much time on screen just, kinda doing the same thing? While in a way, I think Gen can be really interesting, they kinda squeezed the moments he’s doing something unique in some little scenes, but then when we keep seeing him doing the same thing over and over. And sometimes it just goes against some screentime that could have been used to develop more relationships. If the game was longer with the same ammount of Genesis, I guess it would have been okay but ye, there’s not enough of the others characters to just blink it away. And my major issue with Gen will be explained in the Least fav moment, although you probably guessed by now.
Favourite moment: Overral his first appearances in Banora are my favs. Especially when he makes Zack trip down. But I also like the conversation Zack and him have in Gongaga, at least it fuels my headcanons that it might be more Genesis doesnt really know how to communicate than Gen just screwing around.
Least favourite moment: His implication in the Nibelheim Incident. Oh boy, when I see people hate on Genesis, just for this scene, I agree so damn much. (while I actually LIKE this character). This scene was an addition that I truly don’t like. The thing is that, without this scene, Genesis would have been, okay, maybe an underdevelopped goofy villain, but that’s it. I honestly think this scene is where the fans started to hate him more than anything, and I can’t help but agree. While I do love Sephiroth’s quote during that part (”No matter if what you’re saying are lies to decieve me or the truth I’ve been seeking all my life, you will rot”), I think this scene does everything wrong.Without taking OG in consideration, I find it quite weird. The game tries to make us think that Genesis, Angeal and Sephiroth got along okay. And while I do think Sephiroth was closer to Angeal than he was to Genesis, I still think he at least kinda enjoyed Gen around. And, yeah, I get it, his degradation makes Gen go crazy, but I don’t think Gen’s way of talking could have got him anywhere. It could bring fuel on my “Genesis doesn’t manage to communicate” headcanon, but in that scene it is more absurd than that. He just throws all those truth to Sephiroth expecting Sephiroth to follow him, and especially since his way of adressing those truth, in my opinion, are really despicable and there’s no way Seph would have sided with Gen after that. Bad move Gen. Taking OG into consideration, this scene is really annoying me. I feel like it takes Sephiroth’s agency in his villainy away. Now, OG if I recall correctly, still suggest that Sephiroth is driven mad by Jenova. But otherwise, he’s the one doing the research, he’s the one doubting himself. The reason the truth hit him ike a truck is that he has absolutly no one around to make him realize that. So he goes big on it. He’s alone in it, he has no support at all. While by having Genesis in the scene, it is much more like Genesis pushed him to villainy. And keep in mind, I was introduced by the FFVII complication BY Crisis Core. And I can assure you that, until I played OG, I honestly thought “Genesis drove Sephiroth mad”. And I think it kinda goes against Sephiroth’s storyarc.I think isolement (like they were going for) would have been a better take on Sephiroth’s story there. He has always been different, stronger, treated differently by scientists. Genesis and Angeal had betrayed him, Zack isn’t really close to him (and I wouldn’t be surprised Zack is still kinda pissed at Sephiroth for giving him the mission that got Angeal killed and then not talking to Zack again). Angeal is dead, Genesis is thought dead or at least still on the run. With CC’s storyline, Sephiroth’s isolement is even stronger. He has been left alone by his friends, no one gets really close to him, and all. Having Gen in this scene is still having Gen telling him “Join me”. It’s not isolating Sephiroth as much as CC was going for. It just shows Genesis be a little prick and taking the spotlights on Sephiroth going mad, while they could have exploted it in a different way. And this is really representative of my issue with Gen that is that he steals the moments away from characters. While I do think that if he wasn’t involved in the Nibelheim event, we could have easily seen more of Genesis in the remake without any problem, his implication makes everything more complex and I truly hope they don’t take it into account.
A situation with this character that I want to see explored more:hadn’tweexploredhimenoughalreadyMaybe more scenes before he went crazy would have been nice. There’s only the fighting scene as told by Sephiroth and quickly the journal we find in the Banora’s ruins at the end that tell us more about Gen, I would have liked to know more about his personality other than that. Especially his bond with Angeal and Seph out of the fighting and “hero talks”. Little less Loveless, litte more domestic.
An interesting AU for this character:Okay it’s not the most interesting but it’s the one that makes me laugh the most that I’ve seen in a fic once and I can’t stop thinking about it: School!AU (High School, College, whatever) where Gen tries to force teacher to study Loveless in class and once they accept, he keeps interrupting them because “no your interpretation is wrong” that’s the cholar’s interpretation sir” “iT’S WROnG IM THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS LEMME DO THE LESSON”. Also he’d be the one who’d go see every movie adaptation of Loveless and bitch every two seconds that “it iS NOT LIKE IN THE BOOK”(didn’t I just say less loveless more domestic)Otherwise I kinda like how some fic writers (especialy in the ASGZC’s side) are writing Genesis most of the time, and how they develop him. I wouldn’t know what AU to pick for him tho. But ye anything that actually develop his bond WITH the characters and not by taking over the others characters’s screentime is fine by me.
A crossover:I’m weak for the fandom trends, him as Mettaton from Undertale or, just, behaving like Mettaton just gives me life.
OTP (or OT3+ etc…. just… favourite ship):ASG usually seems good to me.
Other ships?: Well I do like ASGZC and any combinaision of those usually so there’s that.
BROTP:As a Brotp, I tend to prefer his friendship with Angeal. Although I do think there might be some intereting stuff to be developped with Zack.
NOTP:Genesis x FFVII Remake
An assortment of headcanons! :Okay so it’s gonna be quite weird and I’m gonna be walking on eggs for this one, but tryng to stick to the game I feel like Genesis could have some sort of communication problems. Maybe I’m just trying to explain by writing (as, underdevelopped writing) more than anything, but.. eh. But it feels to me like Genesis kinda uses Loveless and the Banora White as communication tools more than actual communication. He expresses his goal via the story of the book, even when given straight forward questions. It’s almost like for him what he’s saying makes sense and he doesn’t really know how to express it otherwise. Same goes with the Banora White that seems to be for him sort of “how to become friend”. In the Banora Ruins, when you find the newspaper, he says that “he would like to share a Banora white with Sephiroth”, sort of like, this is how he wanna befriend him. He spend the game with the Banora White with him like it held a huge meaning to him, and seems overjoyed once Zack ends up eating one. I somewhat think Genesis has some communication problems and he tries to use the tools he’s more comfortable with in order to express what he wants to say. He pushes away people and when he tries to reach out, he’s quite clumsy. Especially with Zack actually, where you can see Genesis trying to explain himself to Zack, but not really managing to. I feel like they start to understand each others when Zack finally accept the Banora White, deciding therefore to step into Genesis’s world rather than force Genesis in his. I feel like Genesis didn’t have much friends growing up. Probably being “the rich kid” or the village didn’t help. But he had a friend who supported him all the way through and never took the rich part for granted. Angeal never asked for anything, not even an apple, which could be a first for Genesis. I think also maybe his parents may have overcovered him, if I can say. For instance, the fact his parents are the one who are paying one of Genesis’s fandom. While the other fandom waare interested in Genesis’s views on Loeless, the other one is really supperficial and pride themselves with spending so much money on goodies for their star. I couldn’t say they like Genesis as much as they say, more, like, there’s advantages in being his fans. In the end once the parents die , the fanclub seems more worried about not selling all the goodies and not having any money more than the fact Genesis is on the loose (in comparaison to the Angeal’s fandom it is even more obvious). I think that might be something reurring into Genesis’s life, people being around him much more for profit than anything else. Angeal is different, and he admired Sephiroth. Both of them never really treated Gen as “that rich guy” but at least as friends.I think Angeal was the kind of guy who was able to deal with anything Genesis could pull on him. On the other hand, I think Sephiroth was more in the confrontation with Genesis. Seph seemed to tease Genesis a little more than Angeal did. I think it’s where the competition in Genesis’s mind kinda formed. Moreover, by being stronger than Gen, Gen probably (well, did) developped an inferiority complex, maybe more because Sephiroth didn’t seem to care about many things that were defining Genesis. Maybe I’m overanalysing it, but I would tend to think that Genesis felt kinda isolated at time. If his friends were patient to listent to him talk about Loveless, it’s not like they cared enough (and once Angeal and Sephiroth stops caring about him, he realizes no one takes the time to actually relate to him, and instead of trying some new ways to communicate, he keeps insisting). I think Gen would have felt this isolation since he’s quite young tho, because of how much he tries to be like a fictional character he admires and he keeps trying to use it as a justification for his actions. So which one came first, the isolation bringing him to be obsessed or the unhealthy obsession bringing him to be isolated? I would actually go with the first one.
BUT HEY, THAT’S JUST HEADCANONS. LOTS OF HEADCANONS. tryingtojustifybadwrittinglikeitwasn’tbadwritting
Anyway, that’s about it and oh boy that was longer than expected (should I put it under cut or…?)
anyway, thanks for playing :DD
