ARE YOU TRYING TO MURDER ME KING RECORDS
ARE YOU
I know i repeat myself all the time but like
someone had to WRITe Gentaro calling Dice his Messiah
Like that someone HAD to knOW Gentaro called Dice his "star crossed lover in another life” a couple of drama tracks before that
and this person saw this, saw them brush it out as a joke, and went “well, anyway, he was serious-”
I just want to say i owe this person my life, but stiLL
“TAKE ME AWAY WITH YOU MESSIAH” I MEAN. I MEAN.
THE THING IS look i’ve talked for hours with my friend about “When did Gentaro fall in love with Dice” and you know what?? i still can’t pinpoint it bc it feels so “love at first sight” WHILE ALSO not being love at first sight and that’s why the post i rebloged just now made me think of them.
The quote being this:
Personally, I think Gentaro at least fell down the rabbit hole when Dice defended him in Just a Friend. This is the drastic moment that weighed on their relationship. Gentaro who had gone through a lot of bullying in his life, gets confronted to a situation that is similar, and Dice stood up for him, fought for him, didn’t even ask about it.
And it still makes me weak that it’s a plotpoint for Gentaro that his bedridden childhood friend asked him to be his friend before they established anything, which had Gentaro spiral down thinking originally that the guy wanted to use “the rotten person he was”. But Dice, with all the teasing, with all the times they bicker, with all the times they are not serious, with the fact the very morning he told Gentaro he wasn’t going to forgive him after the identity thief joke, Dice without any prompting, yelled to Hifumi “If I let you trashtalk my friend i ain’t even human.”. He didn’t ask Gentaro about whenever they were friends or not. They were.
And Just A Friend ends with this softness from Gentaro toward Dice, realizing that not only Dice has his back, but Dice also doesn’t pry. Dice doesn’t try to dig where it hurts, doesn’t try to understand why Gentaro is like that. It just happens that Gentaro Is Like That. And for Gentaro who tends to analyse why people behave the way they do (see how he overanalyse Jakurai upon meeting him, or how he’s trying to analyse Ramuda), and that it comes with Gentaro thinking lowly of himself, this makes Dice, well, a safeplace again.
So to me, Just A Friend was The Moment.
........................
Y E T by that point, Gentaro had already 1) called fate the fact he met Dice on his way to Ramuda’s, 2) written a fanfic where he specifically tells Dice that “they don’t know what path awaits in front of them and perhaps there is none but all he knows is that he wants to walk it together” also they hold hands, 3) PANELS of soft stolen looks don’t @ me, 4) Calling Dice his star crossed lover from another life, making up a whole backstory about how Dice was his bodyguard and that “since we were forced to be apart while we were lovers, isn’t it normal we don’t want to be apart in this life?”.
And look i am not even saying Gentaro is aware he’s fallen in love, i’m team “they’re both oblivious and in denial” but Gentaro at least seems to have a grasp on the fact that “well it’s just that i want to spend my time with him and that he’s my messiah and that i want to spend my next lives with him” (and god i wish i was exagerating but he does say pretty similar things IN CANON), and Gentaro is taking more chances about “WHAT IF” and he explores it with Fiction to try it out, to see if he’s comfortable with that.
But Just A Friend is the moment Gentaro actually fell in love with Dice deeply to me. But it doesn’t remove the fact he’s been DROPPING HINTS ALL AROUND that he likes Dice very much.
And it reminds me of that analysis of his storyline in relationship to No Longer Human and specifically of the character his dynamic with Dice seems to be based on, the fact that the character Gentaro has a lot to relate to, is generally paranoid and worried about every type of human he meets, except the one character whom reflects Dice for whom he goes “At any rate, as far as the bill was concerned he never caused me to feel the least anxiety or fear.” / “Another thing which saved me when with Horiki was that he was completely uninterested in what his listener might be thinking, and could pour forth a continuous stream of nonsensical chatter twenty-four hours a day, in whichever direction the eruption of his “passions” led him.”/“If ever I meet someone society has designated as an outcast, I invariably feel affection for him, an emotion which carries me away in melting tenderness.”
bc Gentaro had been comfortable with Dice FROM THE START. He was still paranoid enough about Ramuda to make researches about him, to overanalyse him, but Dice being that simple made him FEEL COMFORTABLE with him and immetialy lowered his defenses.
AND AND AND Gentaro’s legit first impression of Dice was just Dice complimenting his lyrics unprompted. And as soon as they became a Posse, Dice started to tease him, in the second drama track it’s Dice who pulls the “Gentaro i won’t forgive you if you don’t stay” at him to drag him into a gamble, it’s Dice who establish at first that he WANTS Gentaro around (even if it’s just for a gamble, it turns out that they became closer with that).
And for the life of mine, I think Gentaro must have found affection in that. He felt SAFE around Dice, and Dice quickly established himself in a way that was welcoming for Gentaro, and Gentaro never had to feel bad about being with him. And already in the second drama track Gentaro starts to go on about how he finds Dice interesting and he wants to play along with whatever Dice has in mind (and that leads to the teasing) because Dice’s reaction is ALWAYs interesting. Like look at how in Me Against the World he’s surprised by how Dice reacted to his teasing : Dice always surprises him. He does say in Just A Friend that being around Dice is never boring and that it ends up always interesting. And we know that Gentaro wants nothing else than to kill that boredom. (hell, the line in Stella right before he begs Dice to take him away is “I want to kill that boredom that is choking me - so take me away with you Messiah”, the “killing boredom” motif comes back a lot but two times Gentaro considered it’s being with Dice that actually does kill that boredom and in sUCH A LIGHT)
SO LIKE it’s so hard bc Gentaro just started to fall for Dice very early on, he immediatly was driven to him, lowering his defenses around him, never felt the need to have them up to start with, and it just went downhill here.
And I always struggled to put it into words exactly bc this is a MESS, I can’t just say it’s Just a Friend that sold it when Gentaro went to such ridiculous extremes before that, but this quote? this quote nails it. This is it. This is them.
And i’m going to cry again bye ✌
GenDice is real. It can't be argued. ~ Haze
LDJFKLD I MEAN. I MEAN.
Haze this is a very bad plan to encourage me about that, i’m trying to keep in check about it, i know it doesn’t seem like it but i truly am trying, but next thing you’ll know i’ll end up crying again because,,, look,,, soulmates,,, soft,,, sweet sweet morons that means too much for each other,,,, i’m too weak for that. It’s hard not to read all the bullshit Gentaro comes up with to cling out to Dice and the way Dice can get viciously loyal to him defending him in every way and not think they,,, aren’t,,,, real,,,,,
i’m just gonna cry a bit again they have completely and utterly destroyed me i-
Also if hypmics really can only pick up the truth and you cannot lie to a hypmic, i really want to know how it works with a fiction like Stella, because on one hand while a fiction we have overanalysed this song back and forth to realize it fits the characters, which is like, good and all, but it therefore means that Gentaro calling Dice his Messiah is a Certified Truth in his perception of Dice, and I’m not sure i’m ready for that level of *screams in a pillow*
so this is one of the big Peak Dumbass Gentaro moments and i’m still laughing so hard at this one. Oh Gentaro. You’re so dumb.
I love that he calls Dice a weirdo in this considering it’s set after Dice said he’d “never be in love with a weirdo like him”. Petty much?
Also *coughs* knowing Gentaro ended up buying dinner to Dice that very evening... dumbasses......

Call Out Post @ Gentaro:
- Why did you have to write a song to tell Dice “Take me away with you, Messiah” - WHY DID YOU HAVE TO SING THAT LINE LIKE THAT.
(translation//Full Song)
Gentaro: Is that even legal?
Dice: When there’s no cops around, anything’s legal!
