Tetsuro Sato of Ichinoseki City -Guide at the Iwate Tsunami Memorial Museum- Opened on September 22nd, 2019, the Iwate TSUNAMI Memorial Museum is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and will serve to pass on the lessons learned from this horrific tragedy. In order to convey how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters, the museum has hired a number of people to serve as guides in Japanese, English and Chinese. We wanted to know about their motivations in becoming guides, and figured a People of Iwate interview was in order.

“Why did I want to become a guide? My hometown of Ichinoseki is right next door to the coast, next to Rikuzentakata City. After the tsunami, many younger colleagues of mine went to help out immediately, and I decided I needed to do something as soon as I was able. I retired last year in March, and it was finally my chance to see how I could help out in Rikuzentakata. I saw they were hiring at the museum, and knew I wanted to become a guide as well. Japan is a country that suffers from many natural disasters, but we’re also blessed by this beautiful coast, with its seafood bounty and majestic scenery. How to get to Iwate Tsunami Memorial Museum -From JR Ichinoseki Station 1. At JR Ichinoseki Station, transfer to the JR Ofunato Line, and go to JR Kesennuma Station. (1 hr 20min) 2. At JR Kesennuma Station, transfer to the BRT line, a bus service that runs on the roads as well as the tracks left behind from a train line that was washed away by the tsunami. Ride the BRT line to Kiseki no Ipponmatsu Station (30 min).

*JR Ichinoseki Station is 2 hours away by shinkansen from JR Tokyo Station, 45 min away from JR Morioka Station by shinkansen, and 1 hour away from the JR Hanamaki Airport Station. Please refer to Hyperdia.com for train schedules.
