Icon Basic: GIMP Edition

More Adjustments

In my basic icon tutorial for PS I mentioned that once I do the layers on Multiply 100%, Screen 100%, add Brightness at 30%, and do a 70% Sharpen, I also use a PSD. Well, Gimp does not have a PSD option so here are my other basic adjustments from that PSD.

Before:

Apply these adjustments in GIMP under Color in the menu and that's it. Merge your layers

Icon Basics: A Do It Yourself Guide

Borders

Today we're going to learn to use the Rectangle Tool to create borders for our icons. I'm doing this in Photoshop but I'll be making a tutorial for GIMP in the future. I have to refamiliarize myself with the program.

Lets get started!

Step #1

You need to have your icon open, and edited to your liking. Then you're going to select the Rectangle Tool from the tools menu. Once you have that selected there will be a new option in your top bar menu.

Set these to Shape, no Fill, and Stroke to no Fill as well. Make sure the line px are set to 1px and then select the type of stroke you want. There are three options. Solid, dashed, and dotted.

Step #2

Using the Rectangle Tool, create the border right on top of your icon. A new layer will be created when you do. One it is you can still go to the options bar up top and change the type of stroke and the color if you choose.

Step #3

Now that you have the border you want, merge layers (layer, merge visible) and save your icon.
