Okay I’m just going to say it: I strongly dislike those psychological killing stories like d*nganronpa and the saw franchise for the same reason that I hate the trolley problem: it forces a sadistic choice onto people, then allows the mastermind to pretend that it’s some kind of broad statement on human nature.
Yeah, no shit! People are capable of awful things under duress, and frankly I don’t care if Susan from gardening club would willingly rifle through my intestines in order to get the key to the chains for the bomb around her ankle or whatever. I hope Susan from gardening gets therapy after this!
But the entire thing rubs me the wrong way because it claims that the world by extension is inherently unfair and the only way up is to claw someone’s eyes out. Which is patently untrue and feels vaguely fascist in a late stage capitalistic way!
There’s plenty of resources to go around, and the real problem is the upper echelon hoarding them mindlessly. And that upper echelon strongly, strongly resembles the sadistic megalomaniac who spends all his free time building torture devices for shits and giggles. It ain’t that deep. Seize the means of production, motherfuckers.
Or, alternatively? Show that the opposite is true. Give people the resources for mental and financial stability and watch them flourish and support each other in ways you thought impossible. Clearly whoever orchestrates these death games has money to spare, right?
