"Though I support #MeToo as a way to share our stories & for ppl to feel less alone, I’m not gonna lie - my heart sinks when people say “I’m sorry that happened to you.” Swells then sinks. Bc yes it feels good to be heard, but action feels better. Yes, it’s an appropriate FIRST response. But I’m interested in the 2nd too. I want a hashtag for all of us who stand by & do nothing too. Policy reform. No one wants to be a victim, even those in a cycle of victimhood. And this isn’t about demonizing. This is to create real change to a systemic issue. I understand boys go through it too. I see how the “passive voice” that #JacksonKatz so smartly pointed out affects boys & men too. But I spent the wknd explaining to 1 of my best friends from high school, now a military man, how things lk sexual harassment, assault and body image issues, affect women differently due to the historical norms and values systematically entrenched in our world, and he still had a hard time accepting this. Bc usually, he wouldn’t have to. I told him my story of sexual harassment in college, not for me, but for him to see how insidious it can be...that he can’t only yell at men in his battalion when they make crazy lewd remarks about women, but how it happens in ways overlooked. At the end of the story, he said, “I have a lot to talk to my daughters about.” His girls are 5 & 8. But he has a son who is 16 that he had as a teen - he didn’t think 1st about him. This statement is key bc we’ve heard it our whole lives (or even felt, unsaid) to excuse male behavior that is unacceptable. We don’t hear “girls will be girls” as a motto, esp to explain silly, ignorant or harmful behavior. So w/ us all more aware, we can no longer put the onus on those who hv things perpetrated against them to be “stronger” “smarter” wiser “know their worth” etc. It’s time we put the pressure on those doing the behavior to STOP, accept responsibility, educate themselves and CHANGE. repost @streetartglobe 'Me too' means starting to stop apologizing for men; too often women can't call out abuse and harassment for fear of greater consequences. We enforce their silencing the less we acknowledge that, me too.
