Nothing to Write Because Everything is Written? Then Read This⬇️
I should have added this to my writer's block series tbh. Because many people face, what I call the "idea block".
You get the idea in your head and you google it and scan the forums to check if anyone has done it or not. And you spend months researching your topic.
End result?
Whatever you thought about writing is already written.
You fall into despair. And you think that there's no way on earth that you can up with anything fresh. You quit the project.
That's sad.
Well, here's the good news for you.
It's not about a new idea; it's about presenting an old idea in a unique way.
Let me give you an example -
If you tell me that you're thinking to write about a young boy whose parents are killed parents and he ends up living with his grumpy uncle and aunt. An old then takes him away and trains him to inherit magical powers so that he can destroy the most heinous evil on this planet.
I'll say you can't write it because it's Harry Potter. Your reply would be "correct, but it's star wars too"
The centuries old adage -
"Good artists borrow. Great artists steal."
still holds true, and will remain true as long as humanity exists.
Have you read about Joseph Campbell's Hero Journey? There is a reason why these repetitions of similar themes resonate across time.
So, next time if you're thinking that your idea is already taken, here's what you should do -
Don't reject the idea.
Read the story which already has your idea.
Add your own unique angles and characters to make your story better in a different way.
You DON'T need a new idea. You need a proven idea that has already worked, and make it better.
