I've been meaning to put some of my Ideas to post, thus here: each will use the tag #idea description, and will cover an OC, environment, or fic idea, in whatever depth I've thought them. I will probably omit descriptions already elsewise provided (eg, Salen, Great Garden, etc)
In this, I will be taking feedback -- if any of the ideas gets a particular response, I will more-strongly consider it for fics in the future, both oneshots and longfics.
Kilometres above the wilderness of a post-apocalyptic world, a strange monument of the fallen civilisation has found new life. The core structure itself is rather simple: a concrete bowl, a hundred metres across at the base, curving into walls of eighty degrees, and a lip fifty metres across. The concrete is multiple metres thick, and the exact method of flotation is unknown.
The original purpose for such a structure has long since been lost, but a new purpose has been found: built from the scrap of the ruins of some industrial construction, a whole town. Buildings made on foundations of wooden-covered scaffolding floors, walls and roofs of large sheets of galvanised corrugated steel. Pieces are bolted or welded together and from these pieces, three dozen mostly-interconnected buildings. Most buildings are upon the lip -- these use strong welded frames to keep the immense winds out, and covered walkways to protect from such blusters; some buildings are beneath the lip, suspended by huge industrial chains, arranged as to let them sway just slightly -- under cover of the lip, the wind is much calmer, and more importantly, one is much closer to the entrance.
A single hole is bored into the concrete, connecting the base level to the underside of the lip -- though this hole predates the modern settlement, it has been repurposed to be the main way off the [airship] docks. Wide catwalks, flanked by small, suspended buildings extend from this entrance, sprawling out into a set of piers. Lanterns hang from the corners of the catwalks and buildings, bright enough to be visible from the ground on a clear night -- nominally these are for navigation, but it illuminates the underside well aswell.
Very little of the town is constructed of anything other than steel -- a stove has been fashioned from a small firebox, and several pots have been shaped from copper sheets left behind.
The largest building, and only two-story building (wind moreso a concern than structure), contains both this community kitchen, and six guest rooms, for those visiting. Small, but having everything one needs; the lack of seal between the base of the walls and the floor causes a constant whistling of wind as it flows around just above the ground. Despite this, these rooms are still much warmer than most others, on account of the consistent heating within the building.
Though nominally a bit of a minimal life -- due to mass and fuel limitations, getting significant quantities of goods from the surface to the platform via airship is a difficult endeavour, thus almost all constructions are made from the plentiful salvage of the platform -- its actually some of the best of the region. The forests below are among the more dangerous of the known locale, making the platform a comparatively serene community, and the frequent trade and travel of those passing through gives no shortage of newcomers, new things, new news.
There's not much to see when peering off the edge -- those who live on the platform are very used to sitting right on the edge, but travellers are advised not to do so over such a big drop. There's forest surrounding the area, a long lake running down a valley, and in surprisingly close proximity, a community upon a long dam. Despite such proximity, very little is known about it -- its clearly visible on most days, but the nearest surface port is a day's travel through dangerous forest roads away.
