Vas a aprender a ser turista.
--un jornalero today in response to my declaration that I'm studying anthropology.
I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Raúl briefly this fall through a service learning placement with el Centro de Educación del Pueblo (CEP), before his illness became too serious for him to continue leading workshops. I didn't learn until after he was already in the hospital how he was also one of the founders of IDEPSCA, too--the organization with which I work through Proyecto de Jornaleros at UCLA. I know none of the people that generally read my blog know much about the community work I'm involved in, but this news today is incredibly sad. His leadership and vision were inspiring and, honestly, life-changing, and he was so, so dedicated to his work and to his cause. My heart goes out to the compañer@s at CEP and his family. Que en paz descanse.
